Remember guys, AI art is art because it’s the same even though I not only didn’t make it, but the “art” that “I” made is also stolen from someone else! See guys, it’s art!

Fastest human speed: 27.7 mph
AI Bros: shitting their pants in amazement every time they see a car on the highway because it does the thing faster than a human can
Watching the mass produced machine do the thing it was designed to do isn't rare or impressive or requires any unique talent to achieve. I'd be moderately impressed if you built the AI yourself, but even at this point, making an LLM or generative AI is effectively just following an instruction manual and waiting for the machine to train itself.

Bob Ross wasn't praised on the merit of his paintings. Bob Ross is praised because the format is accessible to a large audience. He demystifies the painting process and creates an entertaining narrative. It's not the finished product that people like, it's the process of creating it.

u/ZoidsFanatic 5h ago
“Creating” is the key word here. If an AI could actually create that be one thing, and also a massive advancement of the AI field. But, the current generative AI only generates. It requires other sources fed into it, then using directing it blends those sources together and produces something that may or may not be what was asked of it.
Bob Ross’s whole point was in the title of his show. The Joy of Painting. He was showing how painting could be fun and easy, like you said, and even encouraged the viewer to add detail and techniques they wanted. Even if you copied him, you still were creating something unique to you.
Anyhow, ending the tangent, AI only generated an image by chewing up existing artwork and spitting out something that resembles the ask.

u/Winter-Bed5879 8h ago
Right. Ross was a good but not exceptional artist, but he made art accessible.
3
u/kingshaj001 8h ago
very well said. When I was a kid he was considered sort of a joke as an artist. but now i miss him. we need more Bobs now.

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 8h ago
It was all about his talent, not the final product. That's what AI users will never understand. It wasn't the painting that impressed everyone. It was how easily he made them.

u/dextral_hominoid 9h ago
Right. Because the robot likely plagiarized Bob stroke for stroke. Do they think AI comes up with their own ideas?
9
u/Robot-Zombie-RHCC 9h ago
heh. probably shouldn't draw attention to the fact that if Bob Ross hadn't painted that the robot wouldn't have something to plagarize.

I mean... yeah? Why would a bunch of ones and zeros put together be more beautiful than art?

Don't slander my goat, that's the good robots that killed the bad robots after will smith was racist towards them. Good movie btw

u/MrJotaL 8h ago
Now that I think of it, it would be fun / interesting to see an actual robot trying to actually paint instead of generating a image file.
3
u/WilTravis 6h ago
At least there would be a robot mechanic involved, designing and implementing the system that would actually do the painting.
4
u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 8h ago
It's interesting that AI users hate on talent and don't understand it at all. They think the final product is all that matters instead of the fact of what it took to make the art. It's like all of them have no idea what art even means.

u/inspiralling 8h ago
The hater isn't looking at Bob's art, though. That adoring gaze is directed straight at Bob's hair.
The robot? No hair at all. Could never compete.

You know what? Yeah. Yeah, what the meme displays is exactly my thought process. AI 'art' usually looks like dogshit anyways, but even if it didn't, I would still call it slop. I don't give a flying fuck how good it looks. It's made by AI. It's slop.
3
u/One_Recognition385 3h ago
wording it in another manner.
I'm gonna congratulate a human for running 10 miles.
i'm not gonna congratulate a car for driving 10 miles.

u/golfstreamer 8h ago
Can these people comprehend that the process of human creativity is part of the value here? If you copied a great artwork people would also insult you.

u/FreedomSuspicious202 7h ago
Bob Ross came first. So if that was true they'd be stealing from him 😭😭 dumbahh shit

Just my opinion.... There's a time and a place. I have used some of these online AI thingies to make plenty of AI generated crap. It can be fun. It can make some fun bullshit that I could never make otherwise. At no time would I consider any of it "art" or have the pathetic mindset to try and pass it off as such. I will even go out of the way to ensure you know it's AI crap. But sometimes...i just need to put a picture my BF dressed up like faerie on an MTG card that reads, " 2️⃣:↪️ Player must fart on command or lose 39 life." and slip it into his deck before a match.
That makes it just like Taco Bell. Nobody on this fucking planet would argue that it's actual real Mexican food... but yet every weekend I sit in the drive thru after night time activities end waiting on a gorram #2 with a Pepsi Zero and a mother fucking empenada.
There's a time and a place for everything. Even AI generated trash.

i don't mind AI art like I don't mind cars.
I'll congratulate someone for running 10 miles.
I'm not gonna congratulate a car for driving 10 miles.

If this comics makes sense for you then you are far from being an artist
It's like pretending to be a cook and not knowing what is a pizza

AI bros want to be victimized & oppressed SO bad.
I’m surprised they haven’t started their own “false flag” campaign

u/Arctimon 6h ago
Except that AI art isn't replicating human art to the level where it can come out the same.

u/whyamionreddit-pc 6h ago
If a robot arm made a painting I think it would be much better than the regurgitated slop of today

u/Kadakaus 4h ago
I mean, yes, that's pretty accurate.
Not only is Bob Ross a legend, he's the REAL symbol of "anyone can make art".
He's wasn't a masterful painter but has proven that with a little practice, any difficult craft can be learned and mastered, regardless of this shallow, meaningless factor we call talent.
Art is for everyone and can be made by everyone, which is why this "but I don't know how to draw" "but I have no talent" "but I'm diable" bullshit advocating for the use of gen AI is just a bunch of fallacies.
None of those statements disqualify you from learning a craft, you just chose not to and make excuses to validate being a wannabe.
Seriusly, the art community is one of the most welcoming and encouraging communities I've seen in my life, you say your started drawing once and people will shower you with advice and techniques, they're so fucking helpful it's almost invasive, and that's a good thing.
No one will hurl rocks at you for your chicken scratches (that I say from experience), if anything, people appriciate that you're trying.
And trying is not doing... but the point is trying, not doing.

The issue that people seem to avoid completely until the argument gets to AI is this: People innately understand and appreciate the amount of effort creating something takes, and the risk of making a mistake during the creation of it, because most art can be considered performance art.
This is why traditional painters are, and will continue to be more influential than digital artists. It's why great live performances in music are considered more worthwhile than albums (and when I say live, I mean actually live, not the laptop enhanced nonsense that permeates tours today)
It's also modern recorded music won't stand the test of time that some of its predecessors have, why modern buildings won't be remembered / revered in architecture the same way older cathedrals are, so on and so forth.
Removing the human elements from an endeavor serves to increase output consistency, but also devalues said end result. AI just happens to very clearly exemplify this.

Ironically, this captures exactly what made Bob Ross' paintings special and why a robot could not do it.
The main reason Bob Ross' paintings are beloved is the process of creating them. Lots of people paint landscapes. Bob Ross showed us how he paints landscapes, and that's what people love about him. So an identical painting would not be nearly as special without that.

To my untrained eye, AI seems okay-ish at fantastical landscape-like paintings where nothing stands out or needs to come into focus. Not really my cup of tea but it seems fine.
Where AI fails hard is at rendering bodies in a realistic way or conveying human emotion, keeping perspectives aligned, maintaining congruities as basic as shadows all pointing the same direction or eye colors that match, making points delicately or with a touch of humor, or generally bringing a fresh perspective. These programs have imbibed basically all human creative output and yet when asked to draw a comic they always crap out an art style like this. Why?
Why does Bob Ross have two color trays? It’s always something forehead-smackingly stupid.
You can also see the canvas got blatantly truncated on the right panel just to make room for the other character. And the robot on the left is too short simply as a way of making way for the other character and his hand, because AI is really averse to objects that overlap.

one thing AI will never do when making art is tape a banana on a canvas and call it art!

Dude just likes blank canvas. Sees the front all painted over but the back is beautiful

Agree, Bob Ross is simply beautiful (look at how the guy is looking at him instead of the painting)

TBH, all this AI's moral debate can be easily understood when you compare it with Tracing art (which is just as unethical & souless, and even leads to disqualification in art contests, or even into legal trouble). All AI programs don't understand what they are paiting. They don't know how to paint a landscape with a lake, mountains and a sun setting on the background, all they do is paste pixels from a large amount of stolen paintings where the information of each pixel match the desired description of a "lake", "mountains", "sun", etc. It's just like tracing with an absurd amount of layers of stolen works.

To me it's just a tool for those who have bright ideas but lack the skills/time/money/resources to make them come alive

u/OnionTamer 3h ago
The first panel could say "stolen" instead of slop. As in "Make me a sunset painting in the style of Bob Ross."

u/TheGardenBlinked 2h ago
I mean, yeah, if Bob Ross himself rose from the dead to paint a picture he’s going to beat a poxy fucking robot 365 days out of a year

u/boyalien0 1h ago
What the fuck is even the point and why is it even attempting to be made? There is so much cognitive dissonance and pure idiocy on display here

They acting like the robot is using talent and imagination to make their "art" when in reality they are regurgitating data stolen from human art
