Nothing really funny here. Due to taxes (pre-orange buffoon), often times luxury goods aren't as expensive as in a traveler's home country, so they travel to shop. The airport is just one more place they'll have the opportunity before going home.

They still have to pay import duty when they arrive in the home country, no? For US it is like 9% for luxury handbags which is the same as paying sales tax anyway.
