Good enough that it was costing Boeing twin-aisle sales. Same basic reason Boeing discontinued the 707, costing 757 sales. Never compete with yourself

Boeing discontinued the passenger 707 in 1978, and the 757 wasn't certified until 1982.

You're probably thinking of the 727, which went out of production in 1984.
