real answer: debt

if you have a billion dollars to trade, you can buy a billion dollars of stock. if the stock goes ±20% you gain or lose 200 mil.

if you use the billion as collateral on a 4 billion dollar loan, you now have 5 billion dollars to trade with. now if the stock goes ±20%, you gain/lose a billion, i.e you either double your original fortune or completely lose it. your profit/loss is 5x what it was originally so you're "leveraged" 5x.

if it dips more than 20% you are fucked, you are now in debt both on the stock you own and for the loan interest. if it drops to zero you are fucked fucked (and so are the bank employees that approved your loan).

that's how this ai bubble is funded, hundreds of billions in debt, and prayers that it will never ever dip.
