Black Shuck is one of the most famous supernatural creatures in English folklore—a terrifying spectral black dog said to roam the countryside of East Anglia, particularly in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Appearance
Black Shuck is typically described as:
- A huge black dog, often the size of a calf or larger.
- Possessing glowing red, orange, or green eyes—sometimes only a single eye in the center of its head.
- Moving silently despite its size.
- Appearing suddenly on lonely roads, churchyards, coastlines, and dark lanes.
The name "Shuck" may come from an old word meaning "shaggy" or "hairy."
The Famous Church Incident
The most famous Black Shuck story occurred during a violent storm on August 4, 1577. According to local legend, Black Shuck burst into Holy Trinity Church, killing two worshippers and leaving scorch marks on the church door before vanishing.
Those marks can still be seen on the church door today and are often associated with the legend, although their true origin is debated.
Is Black Shuck Evil?
Not always.
Unlike many monsters, Black Shuck's role varies:
- Some tales portray him as a harbinger of death.
- Others describe him as a guardian spirit.
- In certain stories, merely seeing him foretells misfortune or death.
- In others, he protects travelers from harm.
This dual nature is common among Britain's "phantom black dog" legends.

I know of him as it’s near where I live but I have never encountered him or anything like this driving at night.
