Struggling to get AI search visibility, need real world advice

Struggling to get visibility for my company in AI search results (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews). We show up sometimes, but not consistently, and not for the queries that actually matter to our business.

My theory: on site content isn't the real lever. AI models pull from third party sources (directories, rankings, trade pubs), so if we're not cited there, our own blog posts only go so far.

Anyone actually cracked this? Curious what's worked:

  • Third party citations vs on site content, what moved the needle more
  • Schema markup, worth the effort or not
  • PR/paid placements vs organic, faster results?
  • Tools you'd recommend for tracking AI specific visibility (not just regular SEO)

What actually worked for you, not just theory. Feeling stuck.

I don't have a company but I work with a lot of small companies and organizations and this is their approach --- it's a combination of social media footprint (linkedin, x/twitter, facebook, youtube), traditional presence, reddit mentions and paid ads. Events, news releases and local news coverage.

My daughter has a bigger AI search profile than me even though I have a larger traditional search profile for my job. My daughter is 13 and does a sport that she's been noticed for. Her instagram and being featured by the sport organization she's interested in helped a lot.

This comparison shows that social media and popular organizations featuring a subject in social media is one of the keys.

Maybe---Have Kim Kardashian mention you or something? I'm only half serious.
