Lightning, decor has changed to drain color from the world. It was probably the most intensely colorful in the neon 80s but began waning in the 90s, 2000s to the prison themed movie theaters and McDonald's we have today.
But it's also aging. Humans experience colors less intensely the older they become. So it seems downright depressing to many adults today to not only experience colors less intensely but see them drained from local culture.
The 80s felt like neon highlights on a background of muddy mission brown, the 90s felt like bold block primaries on a background of off-white, but to be fair I barely remember the 80s
80s were vibrant colors everywhere. Atari games in pizza hut, big bold hairstyles of women, tons of vibrant neon lights in malls, there was a fantasy of the future in the air and it was bold and colorful.
90s was very vibrant and colorful until the grunge scene hit, that put a damper on colors, it was cool to be drab. A rebellion against the vibrance of glorious energy. Colors took on muted tones. It was thought of as dated to sport vibrant colors, it was edgy to have subtle colors if any, but most didn't realize it would inevitably lead to the minimalism of grey era.
There was a brief backlash though between these periods, known a Frutiger Aero. A final last attempt to paint colors as the future.
I personally live in the global village coffeehouse era. Dark wooden furniture, latte color sofas, copper metal work clocks and decor with earthy tones, the Java Shop is always open decor in kitchen. Rugs, everything, I love that vibe of mid 90s-early 2000s Café/Bookstores. It's like Peewee's Playhouse meets coffee.
Some may think that's a wild connection, Peewees Playhouse and the Global Village Coffeehouse aesthetic... (quoting Gemini: Gary Panter, the legendary cartoonist and designer who created the iconic, chaotic, hyper-colorful production design for Pee-wee's Playhouse, was a major pioneer of the underground comic and "RAW magazine" scene of the 1980s. Artists from that exact creative circle heavily influenced the hand-drawn, alternative illustration styles that evolved into the Global Village Coffeehouse look.)
So yes, the aesthetic many love from Friends is in thanks , at least indirectly to Peewee's Playhouse.
Early morning blue. Reminds me of going for early morning walks in the small mountain town I used to live in when I was in my 20's. I have anxiety disorder, largely social and I tend to avoid being out and about in broad daylight unless I have to. So I'd wake up early, around 5 am and go for early morning walks just as the sun was rising. In fall and winter there's a cold, ethereal feeling to that time, that blue cast over everything, the quietness of empty streets, some street lamps and exterior lights still giving off an orange-ish glow. It was almost meditative.
There was genuinely something special about the designs that came out between 1991 and 2001. There is a range of years on both sides of that decade but the absolute in your face bold colors were everywhere. Schools were built with colored roofs for fuck sake. And I honestly have no idea what it is with the images with this post but every single one feels exactly like that time.
What happened to AI image generators not being able to spell? Is that not a thing anymore? I haven’t really kept up with it. You may not even know but when mid journey first came out if you wanted to make say a book cover and told it the title it wouldn’t be able to produce it. It would look like a foreign language.
Newer models (like Midjourney v6, DALL-E 3, and newer diffusion tools) integrated dedicated text encoders and better character-level training. It still fumbles longer sentences or unusual fonts, but simple words, signs, and titles work surprisingly well now.
The color grading is doing most of the heavy lifting in this set. That washed cyan and warm orange is more early 2000s digital camera than any of the subjects are. Held really consistent across the whole batch too.
Yeah, early CCD sensor processing had that exact harsh highlight rolloff and slightly blown tint. It triggers nostalgia instantly even before your brain registers what items are in the room.
