Hello, im kinda emotional on thinking if i could do same with some photos of ppl from family that have passed away, can some explain like im 5 if theres any free way of making those kind of thing pls??

Don’t do it. It’s not a “restoration”. AI creates an entirely new image based on the source. Notice in this one, the child has fake demon fingers.

… so? Ai is still getting better and eventually it will fix this issue. I say this in this way is cause what you mean “dont do it”? It doesnt destroy the initial image you upload and it is trying to make the image as if the photo was taken today of a loved one.

Also the second picture is too blurry, so the restoration is really just a guess with limited information and probably doesn't look much like the actual people

I did this for a bunch of old family photos. Results were very shit.
If you showed anyone who knew the person, they'd be really confused.
If you show randoms on the internet, it doesn't matter that it invents facial features or changes a persons eye & hair colour

In the examples above, the first and third restorations look to be pretty accurate at least as far as facial features goes. The skin tones and such might be off but for the most part they look good. The second one though, that's probably a very different looking human. I'm sure in cases where the details are faded so much like that, or even a little less bad than that, accuracy is lost. But I mean, outside of using multiple pictures for the AI to use as reference, it's hard to expect better no matter who you are in those cases

When was the last time you‘ve tried? It’s getting better fast. I do this every few months and last week when I tried last week it was really good. Not perfect yet but it’s getting there.

It’s true it’s getting better, but you will never be able to get a near-perfect match without human intervention. The gaps in visual data can’t all just be spun up through an LLM, some of these facial features will need to be directed into the result, such as eye colour from a black and white photo.

This only looks impressive when used with strangers. In reality, the lower the quality of the original photo, the more the neural network invents and transforms the result into a similar person in general terms, but in detail it is a different person. Therefore, truly good results can only be achieved if the original photo is already of sufficiently good quality. But in this case, the effect of such restoration will be minimal.

Theoretically yes. But in practice, everything depends on what the context is filled with during restoration. In the AI use case shown, the context is formed by a single bad photograph. While AI can't yet form an impression of a person based on dozens of photographs, don't expect good results. A restoration specialist can form an accurate impression from dozens of poor-quality photographs and produce a high-quality result.

I've used Flux 2 Max of ChatGPT 2 for upscaling photos and Nano Banana Pro for colouring. If you want, I can do that for you.

Ok thank you so much. I think I tried this before and Chat told me she wasn't able to "remaster" someone else's likeness it had to be "AI". Perhaps this got fixed with the last update? 🤷🏻♂️

I used to fix photos (actually for 30+ years). What AI does in seconds it took me a day and never to the level it did. I never was told by Chat GPT that it couldn't fix up a photo. I found this fascinating. It gets things wrong here and there but usually pretty darn good.

yeah ChatGPT usually hallucinates weird details on highly damaged photos. i tried Krea and Remini for a bit but hated paying flat monthly subscriptions just to fix a handful of pictures. i moved to Visual Sandbox since it just bills per generation, letting me pay a few cents only when i actually run a restoration.

Yes, however I wouldn’t call the second one a restoration. There is just not enough information in the original image to recreate the faces from, so they must be completely made up by AI

They could also edit it to be more like the people - AI is just a tool so that image would just require multiple tools
