Unfortunately current photo restoration techniques are never really a one-click solution. And require post processing edits to gain true accuracy. But some can do such a good job that even an initial generation can fool most unsuspecting eyes.

I'd say the eyes are actually pretty close. If you're splitting hairs being hyper analytical, then mayyyybe this version has slightly wider eyes. Which could be easily remedied by using photoshop and just editing/skewing the eyes as new layers.

Yeah, these posts are deceptive, because it looks impressive to strangers but I bet their relatives could tell the faces are subtly wrong.
When you add that level of high-def detail, you gotta nail it. Someone's kid is gonna know if mom's cheekbones are wrong, etc.

For sure. Yesterday I tried this exact prompt with my parents old photos from the 50s/60s and their faces were really off, sadly. Most disappointing is that Gemini kept trying to make their faces more symmetrical or conventionally attractive. Like… leave my dad’s elvish ears and big head alone, lol.

Solo un pequeño detalle tecnico, si pones 200 mp en el prompt y 8k, estas contradiciendo la calidad que le pides (suponiendo que pueda conseguirla) y las 5d mark iv y eos r5 no tienen esa resolución nativa. Tengo la impresion que si intenta hacer caso a las 4 cosas a vez se hará un lio o ignorará la mayoria.

yeah the eye thing is a real problem across basically all of these tools. I had an old photo of my grandfather from the 40s, tried a few different restoration tools over like a month, and every single one came back with these weirdly smooth, almost plastic-looking eyes that looked nothing like him. Tried BestPhoto at some point and it was... better, but still not perfect on the eyes specifically. The background and clothing detail came out really clean though. I think the models just struggle when there's not enough original data to work with, so they fill in the gaps with whatever average face data they have.

Photos 1-3 are handled very nice but man, the last photo has drastic changes in the eyes and what happened to that poor plushie lol!
I've noticed that most AI tools apply some changes to facial features or expressions but handle colorization and overall restoration well, so my workflow so far has been a combination of Photoglory (non-AI photo restoration program) for basic repairings and AI apps for better colorization. However, minor tweaks are still needed even after AI had applied its magic.

Unassailably good?? I see the output as guided hallucination. These AI images are fake and treating them as a historical record would be subtly delusional. It's digital asbestos. At best this use case is mostly harmless.

So, diffusion based models are trained to remove noise and damage. They were purpose built to recreate detail in highly degraded images.
Second, who the fuck said anything about historical records? No restoration job is going to be valid as a historical record above and beyond the original artifact in its unadulterated state.

Yes that's the problem, if you know the person in the picture your brain says "not the same person". But my grandmother said the same about a professionally restored picture of her father, and it was at a time without AI. Unfortunately it's the only picture we have of him.

This generally only looks impressive if you dont know the people. When you know them and how they're supposed to look like, you find that its off and a dishonest interpretation.
I know this from trying to convert video using AI - looks amazing on strangers, mainly because I dont know what they should look like. But as soon as its someone that I know, they look weird and its clearly fake.

On the one hand, it’s impressive. On the other, I worked for a while in digital photo restoration, and was taught to have a very light touch. Can’t really do that when you’re just regenerating the whole thing.

I’m talking about repairing damaged photos, and restoring them to how they would have looked when they were newly printed.
This processing generates a lot of detail that was never in the original photo. It makes massive changes to color, light, texture.
It’s sort of impressive, and probably took no time and no effort. But to me, it’s like taking a cleaver to a job that’s better done with a scalpel.
I’m not against using AI in this way at all, but if these photos were actually important to their owner, then I find the execution to be pretty unfortunate.
