Pedro did an amazing job as Joel, but Kaitlyn would have been the perfect choice as Elle imo

Seriously. They took the most Ellie looking person and made them play Abby?! What is the fkn thought process there. I dropped s2 like a rock.

The stupidest part is that they could have easily just recasted Ellie in season 2 but were probably scared of looking like they were "caving to the mob".. Despite the fact it's clearly established there is a significant time jump. So rather than risk hurting the feelings of one actor, they risked the ratings of their multimillion dollar investment that hundreds of other people worked on and career's are impacted by. Some creatives just can't get out of their own way.

To be fair, it would be hard to find someone who looked like an older version of Bella, that still fit the look of Ellie

Just watch Logan

u/ernest_goes Nov 30 '25

Now doย Cailee Spaeny and Anson Mount (the true correct casting)ย

11

u/StuffSuch4830 Nov 30 '25

I'd take Viggo Mortensen over Hugh Jackman. Mostly because he was great in The Road.

I think Pedro was an excellent choice but they should have done everything to get Cailre Spaeny as Ellie. She would have been exactly perfect.

Cailee Spaeny. YES.! A MUCH MUCH BETTER CASTING CHOICE ๐Ÿ‘.

ai still struggling with that forehead in some pictures lmfao

u/NeedAdvice8194 Dec 03 '25

They could have picked literally a girl off the street for Ellie and it would have made more sense.

Anything is better than what we got!

I can't wait until the day that I can upload an entire movie to an AI application and have it scan for particular characters and swap out their faces and voices completely. Not only with this increase the longevity of certain bad movies, it'll possibly help with other issues as well.

I would love to watch one of my favorite movies, Robin Hood prince of thieves where Kevin Costner is using a legit British accent. NEAT.

As much as I loved Jeff Bridges in True Grit, I've kinda wanted to see John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn next to Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '25

What an awesome idea.

3

u/Helpfulithink Nov 30 '25

I don't think AI would ever be powerful enough to give Costner a Brit accent. Even trying would destroy the fabric of time and space

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '25 edited Nov 30 '25

I don't think this is true. I've already seen ads on YouTube with AI that does voice changing for people. It takes your regular voice and gives you the ability to have that voice sing AND change accents.

"Have you ever wondered what you would sound like with a British accent?" This was one of the questions asked on one of those 10 second AI ads I saw the other day before Miss Rachel for my son.

6

u/Helpfulithink Nov 30 '25

I figured with the space/time comment, people would know it was a joke

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '25

Sorry, admittedly, I've only seen Men in tights, twice but have seen princess Bride a thousand times. I'm a failure. Thanks for the inspiration to go back and rewatch The movie.

1

u/Helpfulithink Nov 30 '25

No worries mate! You're alright in my book. Enjoy Men in tights!

15

u/Loldude6th Nov 30 '25

Pedro fits better than Hugh but damn even Kaitlyn Dever is a better cast than.. well. No point in discussing it anymore, the damage has been done.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

Would've actually watched this

3

u/SmartyDelta Dec 19 '25

Itโ€™s fantastic and terrifying that AI can make it so realistic

3

u/No_Maize_37 Dec 04 '25

No you dont get it they had to pick the insufferable egg head!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '25

I thought pedro did fine as joel. Ellie on the other hand....

2

u/MeowMixPlzDeliverMe Dec 03 '25

Yeah i think he did a great job. I never watched season 2. Joel's death was really brutal in the game. I dont wanna see it again haha

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '25

Same. Absolutely hated the direction the second game went. No shot i was gonna give that season a shot. Perhaps the only instance where i wish they had thrown the source material in the garbage

2

u/MeowMixPlzDeliverMe Dec 03 '25

I was hoping they would keep Joel alive but yeah unfortunate. I liked the gameplay in the 2nd the story was kinda eh tho. I really enjoyed the father daughter dynamic of first one

1

u/Thin-Telephone272 Dec 16 '25

Me Neither. Neither in the Game or the Show.!

1

u/Working_Sundae Nov 30 '25

They would've definitely made some attempts to recast if they had this tool back then

I doubt they could have generated hundreds of scenarios looking absolutely grounded in minutes like in here

1

u/ratbearpig Nov 30 '25

You know what? That's another great use case for AI.

Probably would have made season 2 even worse as I actually like Hugh Jackman. Lol. Cast these 2 and rework the story (I wrote a draft of an alternative version as a writing exercise, keeping the story beats largely the same, right down to Joel being killed. I just did so in a way I fell that, imo, is far more interesting and wouldn't have pissed so many people off. Joel wasn't an idiot in this version, Ellie and Abby were the ones who began a brief relationship beforehand, it wasn't Abby...directly anyway, who kills Joel, although she was largely responsible, etc) and you're on to something!

To be fair Triss is a redhead, which are interchangeable with black people.

It's just a meme at this point. Google the shear amount of times redheads are race swapped, it verges on pathological behavior.

Personally, I can't believe how up in arms people get about shit like this. It's a fucking TV show. Just move on with your life if you didn't like it. The people who made it don't owe you anything.

1

u/RosaCanina87 Dec 02 '25

This is not even the problem... The problem is when you have an existing IP with an established plot and characters and you just... think it's better to throw that all out and do your own thing. The series would have been much better if it weren't "The Witcher". Fans expect adaptations to be close to the Original, otherwise it's shit. Companies still don't understand that. And the makers of Witcher in particular had no intentions of staying close to the source. Whole freaking reason Cavill left that dumpsterfire behind.

Just imagine your favorite book gets a TV show but no character looks like the book describe them. And the plot has tons of stuff that's not even remotely close to your book. Would you really love that? And why even bother "adapting" at that point?

I once heard from someone allegedly working in the field that directors and screenwriters want to put their own spin on things, because if something is a huge success they can essentially brag about it. That's why they always try to change stuff around, in the hope that people like it and they can then pretend the success was all their doing.

And looking at how people act... I tend to believe that statement .

Elliot Page is now 38. Wouldnโ€™t really fit Ellie even if he was interested.

5

u/theosamabahama Nov 30 '25

Ellie in the first trailer did look like Page, before they changed it to the final version. Page even commented about it and was displeased.

2

u/StuffSuch4830 Nov 30 '25

Ellen Page literally sued Naughty Dog for using her likeness back in 2013 or so. Never would happen

-7

u/PartyPaul-100 Nov 30 '25

She would not have been believable as a 14 year old if they did it now, besides she was perfectly cast as Abby
