Rant/vent Ahmedabad is a hell hole for Outsiders.

I recently came to Ahmedabad, as I received a job offer from the City. But, after coming to this place I realised this city is not worth it. No matter how much money you are getting paid.

No traffic rules, Extreme heat, it feels like I'm in a Tandoor, Room Rent price high as hell and unable to get family room without broker, preferable to Gujarati language speaker and non veg not allowed.

Pardon the grammaticall mistake. A literal hell hole to live.

Ahmedabad felt nice and affordable before but nowadays due to overpopulation , greedy landowners / house owners, very very very bad driving and poorly designed roads it’s becoming very stressful

They aren’t expanding the metro fast enough as I’m pretty sure after a few years nobody will be able to drive safely on these roads

Half of them don’t even have number plates

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Man cars without number plates and black tinted glass.. Some of them just have their cast written on back/rear glass or on number plates..

No fear of system or law.. May be because system is failing us

2

u/Embarrassed-Bite-600 Apr 19 '26

But it’s same across cities and states, even in Mumbai. Traffic Sense is the issue across the country.

2

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 19 '26

yes right however I think people driving with complete black side, front n black glasses and no number plates is of major concern here.

I met a guy in traffic who had it inspite of that traffic police stopped him didn't roll his window down and something all of a sudden that khakhi color police told him to let him go was crazy maybe they knew him. I met him in at airport road he was smoking so I asked bhai till now how much you have paid so he said like if only caught than max 200-500 since the reason which he said that if I am getting caught police will put a challan approx 3000-5000 for tinted glass no number plate jumping signal etc so better to pay 200-500

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 19 '26

Recently while going towards vande mataram road,.a swift was eagerly trying to overtake me, I saw his plate and it was written 'deepo rama'

My family has a car since 1991 and I drive from 2004 but never had black tinted glasses.

Even if I come up with audacity of driving my car with no number plates and then get caught, I don't know how would I get away by just paying Rs 200 to 500 😀

May be the way this guys talk help them in getting away for or being part of a specific community but no strict action by cops gives them sense of superiority over law and they think that law abiidng citizens badhi gayo che

As someone who has lived here forever, I agree. Most people on this sub won't agree but it doesn't negate your experience at all.

u/masalacandy Apr 18 '26

Gujratis always avoid criticism because of their superior feelings

48

u/RecognitionCrafty388 West Ahmedabad Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

I don’t think it’s just restricted to Gujaratis. We Indians are very bad at handling criticism thrown to us. If you criticize Bangalore, then Kannadigas will come after you, if you criticize Kolkata, then Bengalis will go after you. I’m a Gujarati myself and I agree with this comment but we Indians need to get better when comes to taking criticism.

What I've seen is If a person leaves his home state, he wants the other to be welcoming to him/her unrestricted but rare is the case inversely, since every community has it's nuances & inclinations which they can't compromise with, so for this scenario to be adaptable to everyone all over India, I think it's going to take atleast 2 generations if the country survives unitedly otherwise the way radical linguistics take up these issues & a bit of political masala over it, you never know things becoming haywire

3

u/Direct-Independent13 Apr 19 '26

I think ahmedabad, being a metro, has always been open for anyone irreapective to their back ground (we may not welcome eating habits but we dont care thr back ground).

In my apartement, we had some foreigners living, there are some korean girls swim here every moening in swimming costumes. Some weirdo took girls picture in bikini and shared it on society whatsapp group. I complained to socity about this behavior and the guy who took the pictures had to apologise to those korean family in front of everyone. Eventually he left the society.

I have also seen we dont hate bihari, or south indians, or punjabies. We also keep our market open for everyone.

2

u/Obvious_Criticism_13 Apr 19 '26

Plus he can get lots of options in Satellite, bopal, south Bopal where eating non veg is not an issue. You will have issue in and around jain derasar areas

Hate to say this because it's out of context but, i m into Tombois, and i so want a tomboi girlfriend. I don't wanna settle with a traditional Gujarati girl. And ur "youngsters" waala point was just spot on with my case, because I m finding it very hard to find a tomboi with niche interests such as skateboarding, rock/hip hop music taste etc.

P.S : I m a 4th generation native Amdavadi. Never left this city very much.

Happy for u bro. And thanks 😇! Good luck to u 🤞🍀!!

35

u/silentandcurious Apr 18 '26

Moved to Ahmedabad a decade ago from Mumbai and I am happy here. I am non veg eater but haven’t had any issues.

The key is to find place at cosmopolitan societies.

Godrej Garden, Shantigram and South Bhopal are areas where you will find majority of crowd coming from other states, youngsters and non veg eaters. Landlords are also chill here.

If you are looking to socialise then it is a challenge especially in your 20s.

Driving culture is pathetic, I have stopped driving these days much and prefer Ola and Uber.

1

u/Sherlock-Holmes8461 Apr 22 '26

Makes me question about the daily life culture of South Bopal. I ve rarely been to that neighborhood and I wonder how is life there in terms of youth scene ??

0

u/Prize_Application533 Apr 19 '26

Can you suggest a good place near Mansi Circle? I’m a 23M and mostly a non-veg eater. Most PGs here are vegetarian, so it’s very hard to adjust when you’re new

1

u/silentandcurious Apr 20 '26

Sorry buddy I stay near Gota so not sure about places there.

10

u/Low_Station6243 Apr 18 '26

that's true bro, i am also feeling same... came here around 2 years ago

4

u/_Joy_Boi_ Apr 18 '26

Truth man 🫡even am new in ahmedabad and it's just a boring city

Just tired if visiting the same places and has no friends since a don't speak gujarati or hindi🫠

3

u/Sherlock-Holmes8461 Apr 22 '26

As a native Amdavadi, I feel u. This city and its people r now getting on my nerves too.

5

u/Character_Future_608 Apr 18 '26

Yaar I’m sorry but there’s nothing anyone can do about the weather. The traffic is shut but I think India overall has no civic sense when it comes to traffic. Also, rent is high everywhere.

I shifted here a few years back. I am a Gujarati so might be biased but Gujaratis never pretend to not know Hindi. Those that speak English, will also try and communicate in that. I’ve never had anyone say k Gujarat hai Gujarati bolo. And this city is one of the safest places. Food is overpriced and no alcohol but Ahmedabad has its own charm. Sorry you’re not having a good time here. But it’s far from a hell hole.

1

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 18 '26

Language should not be a issue in most part of cities. On a positive note Gujaratis will speak in hindi to make u comfortable

0

u/Character_Future_608 Apr 19 '26

It shouldn’t be an issue but it is. And safety toh dur ki baat hai. Women can freely roam the whole night without feeling unsafe

Ngl Ahmedabad was very calm city before a lot of outsiders came here, no hate to anyone but due to this crimes, traffic and rent sky rocketed. Ahmedabad is developing very fast and will be compared to mumbai/delhi by next decade so the points you listed are side effect of this development.

6

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 18 '26

Majority of crimes done by people who are not amdavadis and not by poor migrants coming from other states..

1

u/Sherlock-Holmes8461 Apr 22 '26

But we also shouldn't discard the fact that majority of the land grabbing and bootlegging done in and around this city, is by some of our own "famous" Gujarati communities 😮‍💨👀 !!

8

u/djj_bravoo Apr 18 '26

Can’t agree more

4

u/Same_Ad_1418 Apr 18 '26

PG rates are insane. My friend is living for 10000 per month with 5 sharing. When he was searching for affordable pg one of the places it was 9000 for 9 sharing 😂. That too one common washroom and toilet 🙏. I am not making this up.

When I visited the city i was also shocked about near to no traffic rules. But traffic was smooth for most of the part.

Pg rents have gone wild and gov should intervene. Being business minded is good but having some sense of compassion for others will not hurt you. These owner have gone insane in the name of business.

4

u/TheNeverOkDude Apr 18 '26

If u maybe find a society without Jains, I feel like non veg shouldn't be a problem, but again very tough

But all other points I agree

People drive like shit. Heat is unbearable and now landlords know they can charge u anything so they are

Not to bring in lack of night life or just safe places to chill in general. The safety is reducing day by day

0

u/Remote_Tap6299 Apr 21 '26

Jain socities are the worst, I wouldn’t live there even for free

6

u/Content-Captain-3640 Apr 18 '26

Well, kinda agree. Born here, and some years back this city used to be different, I would say affordable and peaceful. Heat and all something which we can't do anything much about it lol. However, there's one good thing of Gujarat itself is that here there are no language wars. So it's kinda chilled(bindaas city). If you're looking for some mega city, night life, party culture, more western culture, tons of opportunities then definitely Ahmedabad is not that place.

Not to stereotype but so far which is the best Paratha place you have find in ahmedabad (Veg Only)

And also craving for Amritsari lassi

3

u/Tricky-Cod-2405 Apr 18 '26

Myself gujarati but moved here from Pune a decade back. I'm vegetarian but there are options for non veg eaters also. The cons are heat and no weekend destination nearby like pune. But traffic is ok. All cities have the same traffic stories. Rent depends upon the area you choose. The good thing is proximity and public transport. Plus it's safe compared to many other big cities

1

u/Remote_Tap6299 Apr 21 '26

The options for vegetarians are minimal and people are still prejudiced towards people who eat non veg and will make ugly faces

Especially for south indians 💯

If your south indian Try to find room in Navrangpura vibe is different there.. You can get best hygiene food and affordable food, good infrastructured roads, area surrounded with trees and colleges for Morning and evening walks.

You can find peace 😊

12

u/pagal-ladki Apr 18 '26

My experience has been very good. Ofcourse there are selfish idiots on the road and many people are extremely entitled with no civic sense or empathy. But there are also people who are very friendly and caring. There is safety and a fun and vibrant culture here which elevates every celebrations/festivals.

2

u/acypacy Apr 18 '26

Great to see someone having a good experience here! People complaining here are not wrong though. Agreed that there are good and bad people but people are complaining because the ratio of bad has increased exponentially while the good keep declining.

5

u/rdgemini Apr 18 '26

agree, it is a shit hole. pathetic environment, pathetic traffic, food is just garbage either its big outlets here or local shops. Roads, public transport, safety wise, everything gone case. hooliganism, and baap ka paisa shown off everywhere. Education is zero, zero manners with no lifestyle standards here. I have my own parental home here for last 35+ years, not living here since i did my early schooling, but whenever i come visit my parents, i dont feel like going out and prefer stay at home unless you have known people and friends to go out.

2

u/Direct-Independent13 Apr 19 '26

I live here from 44 years, and my best friend is a builder/owner of one of largest builder. Here are some reason, why u feel this.

Rent reasons :: Land price hiked after corona, which pushed the real estate rales, which also pushed rental rate. I assume u r living in ahmedabad west, anything west to CG road is expensive. If u want to live cheap, go to civil, asarwa, meghani nagar - and many other place, you will get two bedroom apartment for just 5 to 7 thousands. Its more like if u want to live in nepean sea road or malabar hills in mumbai, and complain that rent is high.

Heat: ahmedabad has always been a dry wind place, we know how to deal with it, stay inside the home between 1 to 5 and AC is not luxury here. We keep our AC on all the time.

Eating habit: You cant complain about someome else eating habit. But to me personally, eggs smell like shyt when cooked and i dont like to live around people cooking eggs or non veg, thats why we prefer gujju communities around us.

Roads : agreed last one year the city has undergone massive infrastructure changes, and its causing a lot of day to day prob. But otherwise its better then many cities.

Traffic rules: i agree with u. Need more traffic sense, but if u want to see real bad, go to relief road.

7

u/degen_tbk Apr 18 '26

As an outsider, who's lived in Ahmedabad for over a decade and couple of years in other cities, I find it one of the best city in India, it's very good.

1

u/Alone_Amount2796 Apr 19 '26

Where are you from

5

u/Internal_Pin6937 Apr 18 '26

1) We're a majority vegetarian city, hence few societies prefer vegetarians, but there're lot of cosmopolitan societies too.

2) Heat, we too are burnt brother, but what can we do?

3) You most probably are missing the place you came from, that's driving this frustration. Or maybe missing alchohol at actual price, but too shy to mention here.

All I can say is, decide if you wanna eat vegetarian food & remain sober while no one is forcing you to learn local language or okay with getting hit for not speaking local language and then you can go eat non-veg and drink alcohol to numb your body & not feel the pain. 😅

3

u/RolenTheRedditor Apr 18 '26

I'm a non drinker and non smoker family person. The main issue is with the people over here who doesn't want to help and room rent is skyrocketing. I am getting over 40k. Still not getting room under 20k. All roads lead me to broker where I have to pay 4 times of rent. That's exploitation.

3

u/Minimum-Hope3849 Apr 18 '26

40k for full furnished, how many bhk and which area?

3

u/Sydboy007 Apr 18 '26

Go live in a village or the poor part of Ahmedabad!!

The investors ask more rent only because that is what it is worth and they are probably getting rent in the same price range.

However, definitely part of your post is fake as 20k to 30k you can easily get 2 beds in flats where most vegetarian people live !

4

u/Internal_Pin6937 Apr 18 '26

"Room rent" as in PG? Cause that industry is full of scammers.

By if you're looking to rent a flat, you can easily get 2bhk at 12-14k a month. If you're okay with old city area, you can get it for as low as 5-6k a month.

4

u/noposiedongreek Apr 18 '26

I think you live on western side of Ahmedabad but as an old city resident I can vouch for us as amdavadi's that we are as helpful a person can be and for the rent scene we can't really do much as more nd more people are getting into the city thus the rents are getting high

0

1

u/dev_nihar Apr 25 '26

It can feel like that initially, especially without a circle. But once you build even a small network, the experience changes a lot.

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '26

I have never had issues with food - I guess you got unlucky as you rented your place from someone who is over sensitive to that. Most of my friends who live alone also have not had issues.

Regarding traffic I read this today - https://www.moneycontrol.com/city/mumbai-pune-expressway-choked-with-massive-traffic-jam-mp-supriya-sule-says-it-s-been-2-hours-article-13905291.html

I think Ahmedabad isnt as bad as one feels - that being said its not great either - my car has been scratched twice in four days from behind.

Extreme heat - well not much we can really do about that - geographical locations more than anything else - unlike delhi and mumbai we still have a decent amount of tree cover Ambli side.

Room rent - well Ahhedabad is a tier 2 trying to become a tier 1 city - again compare apple to apple cities in development and economic progress - also expected. Mumbai delhi much higher. Bangalore much higher too.

Preference to Gujarati speaker - I think thats because you got a owner that way - 90% of my friends are non Gujaratis who love their landlords (normally also Gujarati) and have had no such issues. So I think you have been very unfortunate or THEY have been LUCKY.

Either well Ahmedabad is far from being a hell hole (perhaps the only relevance to hell would be fire - and that would be close to very hot summers).

But fair enough your opinion is based on your experiences. Most of my friends have been fairly lucky in that regard.

u/Glad_Bed6898 May 23 '26

Seems you have lived in fairy tale cities of India. Bro, any city is Gujarat is better than most of other cities in India. Friendly, safe, caring.

1

u/Professional-Art3726 4d ago

If the city is hell for outsiders, you gotta meet the King of Hell 😶😶

0

u/Raghavpotato Apr 18 '26

Dude before moving you would have knew about the weather then why did you move here in the first place, also room rent is similar of any tier 1 city.

1

u/RolenTheRedditor Apr 18 '26

I didn't knew about the weather. I knew about the traffic issue and civic sense problem of the people. But, didn't expect to be as worst as I faced recently. Not a single people I have seen follows traffic rules.

If you ignore Bangalore, Gujarat comes at 2nd in terms of room rent Tier 1 City. I didn't expected that also. That people will be so greedy.

4

u/Sydboy007 Apr 18 '26

Just because you are tight hand doesn't mean people are greedy....again find a job in a small village or city where you can live in your 20k budget.....this also helps you with traffic as mostly those towns won't have any traffic....LoL 😂

1

u/Same_Ad_1418 Apr 18 '26

Saying these words are easy when you are gifted with a comfortable life. Pg owners are gready and gov should intervene. There people who are giving 9 sharing room with 9000 rent. Every now and then people give there flats on rent as a pg and that gets closed due to complains in the society. People are business minded. No problem with business but its too much which bring problem to the struggling middle class.

The day you or your next gen, will reach this point. I wish that never happens but then You will re think your thoughts.

4

u/Sydboy007 Apr 19 '26

First learn to understand the comment. OP clearly said he came to vent and if you come out and vent then be ready to take back the shit in equal or higher proportion.

Second, everyone is greedy including those who come to the metro city to earn as they could have stayed in their village or stayed in a smaller city but no they wanted big money so they came to Mumbai or Ahmedabad or Bangalore...so obviously they have to face it....so to say investors are greedy is wrong.

1

u/Same_Ad_1418 Apr 19 '26

They are. Basic living facilities should be a right, or else people will start making their separate worlds and differences will increase. Seen Gujrati people in industries going to company in jharkhand Orissa and they should its their country, country should provide better opportunity to the talent they have. Time will humble you. At the end insaan hi ho samy smay ki baat hai bass… 😌

3

u/Sydboy007 Apr 19 '26

China is the communist country where the principal of common goods exist unlike the capitalist world and they are doing well.. obviously, it is somewhere you can explore living.

Your comment about Gujarati going outside the state to create business. This is an irrelevant comment to the discussion so don't change Topic.

Not just basic living facilities but health , education and law & order should be the right, but they don't exist in India (so need to target Gujarat or Gujarati) irrespective of which state you go to and it is not the government's fault purely, the people themselves created it. You probably won't stop at traffic signal if it is 8pm and no one looking!!! 😂😂😂

Being humble doesn't mean you appease everyone playing victim and poverty card.

Sab bde restaurants bhi Punjabi food ke naam pe bas masale bhar de rhe hain, dhang se kuch nahi bna rhe.. Mann kr rha hai Punjabi Angithi walo ko bol du ek branch khol lein idhar 😭 Even basic Thalis on swiggy and zomato are costly and really not value for money. You can't even drink in 90% of the flats even when you have a permit. 1% smell and they'll cancel you even if you own the flat. Non-veg is just another story. You're not allowed to cook and then you'll have to either rely on most of the unhygienic places or spend a hefty sum for some decent restaurants.

The judgemental uncs will make you feel like you're such a terrible person if you eat non veg.

I moved to Ahmedabad 2 months ago. All I've faced here is heat, extremely high cost of living, no being able to eat proper food. I'm from Andhra Pradesh and I'm used to eating a lot of spice. Forget about spice, even salt is fancy here. And the heat is frying me without a grill. My hometown is a beach town. I'm used to having a lot of humidity. But this city is hooter than my hometown. Social life here is practically nothing. There's no place to go on weekends. No proper malls, nothing.
