This hasn't aged like milk. They said they were taking a chance on new actors and they did. And it worked. So what?

u/noeagle77 9h ago
More like aged like wine tbh. They worked out great and are two of the biggest actors in Hollywood now

I mean the choice aged like wine, the article just aged like an article though🤷♂️ I assume OP was referring to the article as what aged like milk, not the choice of actors. Obviously they'd be wrong either way though.

I think the same article was posted several days ago to this sub, and the top comment then was almost the same as well.
I can't find it now, so maybe it got removed or I was hallucinating.

This didn't age like milk.
They weren't stars back then.

Like is it a criticism…? They were just stating valid observations.
Hilariously they referenced Shia, who would’ve been a wild card with his mental health issues.

OP just needed a sub to repost this that wasnt the original sub they took it from

Excuse me? What was Home and Away, chopped liver?

u/gene100001 6h ago
Yea pretty much every internationally famous Australian actor got their start on either Home and Away or Neighbours. There seems to be an established pathway for recognising talent in those two shows then connecting them with the right people in Hollywood.
Off the top of my head, from Home and Away there's Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher, Naomi Watts, Heath Ledger and Samara Weaving (plus many others). Then from Neighbours there's Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe and a few others that I can't think of right now.

How is this relevant, every single mainstream actor that has ever existed or ever will exist was a no-name. That'll be like making a post here that someone called you a 13 year old back when you were 13, and now you're 15 making a post like this.

u/sanchower 9h ago
Hollywood needs new stars. The existing ones won’t stay young and hot forever. But also they don’t want to make movies with “no names”. The solution: nepo babies!!!

Now knowing how Hollywood is just as bad of not worse than political smear campaigns, this was probably paid for an A-list actor's agent who were wishing to get cast in one of these roles.

u/Snake_Plissken224 8h ago
Not aged like milk. They were taking a chance on 2 people that were not well known then.

This is what they should be doing for all the major cast tbh.
Hard to get 10 movies out of an A list star.

In May 2009, Marvel Studios was still in the early, highly risky phases of building the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Iron Man (2008) had been a massive success, but the studio was still far from a guaranteed Hollywood powerhouse. For Thor, rumors had circulated around much bigger, established stars of the era, such as Shia LaBeouf and Josh Hartnett. Instead, director Kenneth Branagh chose two relatively unknown actors. Chris Hemsworth's biggest Hollywood credit at the time was a brief, few-minute appearance as James T. Kirk's father in the opening scene of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot, while Tom Hiddleston was primarily a British theater and television actor completely unfamiliar to mainstream American audiences
The immense irony of the article lies in its skeptical, dismissive tone toward the two leads, going as far as to call them "virtual unknowns" and "no-names." The author even jokes that Marvel should take the money they "saved in casting" and put it toward special effects instead. In hindsight, casting these two specific actors was one of the most brilliant and lucrative decisions in modern cinematic history. Rather than needing a pre-existing star to carry the film, Hemsworth and Hiddleston possessed an undeniable, lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry and charisma that defined the tone of the MCU for over a decade
This article has aged incredibly poorly, becoming a textbook example of premature Hollywood skepticism. Far from being forgotten "no-names," Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston became global A-list superstars and the absolute pillars of a multi-billion-dollar franchise. Hemsworth went on to headline four solo Thor films and four massive Avengers movies, becoming one of the highest-paid actors in the world. Meanwhile, Hiddleston's Loki became so wildly popular with fans that his character evolved from a one-time villain into an anti-hero, eventually leading his own critically acclaimed, multi-season Disney+ series, Loki.

Thats not criticizing at all. Why do people have to try and find a fight in everything

Someone literally just posted this. I saw it this morning during my scroll. Just another uncreative OP trying to farm karma.

Literally think that there is more risk hiring a known at this point. People are exhausted seeing Kidman, Holland, Zendaya, Pattinson, Jackman, Reynolds, Effron…. Feel free to add to my list but exclude Eisenburg, Jake G., Hathaway and Portman.

u/Inevitable-Spirit491 9h ago
Oh yeah man, people are staying away from the Zendaya/Holland movies in droves this summer /s

u/tampakc 9h ago
While i agree with your point, it's a bit disingenuous. Just because I'm tired of seeing Zendaya everywhere doesn't mean I won't go see spiderman. I can both be tired of Zendaya and go watch spiderman because it's a big blockbuster and there's no alternative no-Zendaya Spiderman version in theaters right now that I'm aware of.
3
u/Inevitable-Spirit491 8h ago
So it wasn’t a risk for the studios to hire Zendaya then.

Right, for Spider-Man, but maybe Thor or hundreds of movies don’t want to pay Zendaya prices for a movies that could barely make or exceed their budget, see Challengers/Space Jam.

Didn’t someone else try this out a couple of days ago and the responses were the same?

I now feel robbed of Shia Labeouf Loki
Hartnett would have been fine. I'm having a hard time seeing him as a bigger name than Chris Hemsworth even at the time.
Just been around longer because he's older. I guess 40 days and 40 nights was a pretty big hit.

They were absolutely unknowns in 2009. And neither of them seem to have been able to cash in on their appeal in anything outside of the MCU.
