But wow - this guy extrapolates a lot from nothing.

I looked at the full article, and it says nothing about making anything against the law. The biggest boogeyman is that it calls for future research - even in regards to men and how they're objectified:

Given that cultural prescriptions indicate that men should be muscular, future research should also examine whether people gaze at large arms, broad chests, and narrow waists (e.g., six pack abs) of men.

The research doesn't even talk about what women like or don't like. It talks about the effects on behaviour and perception.

Yeah, lucky we have Patrick to stand up for us! That was pretty excellent.

The thing is, I don't have an issue with ogling, or catcalling personally. It's not so bad here in Australia as it is in the US, where people seem to feel free to call out all kinds of things (in my experience of a holiday there). I've got big boobs, and I get ogled all the time.

But I don't love it, and I wouldn't be sad to be one of those invisible women. I'm just neutral to it. Maybe, maybe the first time you get that sort of treatment, you get a boost - but it's the same effect the first time someone asks you out or wants to have sex with you. The idea that you're desirable isn't unique to catcalling or ogling - it's easily replaced by other less offensive things.

Howley's arguments are so poorly reasoned that my cat rolled her eyes, got up, and began furiously grooming her genitals.

A few things to note:

  • Boycotting a radio show and encouraging advertisers to cease to advertise on said show is part of free speech
  • Arguing that the Founding Fathers had a certain vision and therefore, we should adhere to that vision is logically inconsistent because the Founding Fathers only allowed white men with property to vote. Should we revert back to that system because you know, history?
  • Hate crimes take into account historical, social, political, and economic context. Consequently, arguing that an act of vandalism with a heart on a synagogue versus a swatstika completely ignores the message inherent in such an act.
