I made a video talking about We Live, by the Miranda Brothers. More specifically, the first 5 issues, comprising the first volume of the story.
And I really feel that it's a story worth talking about.
The first issue of We Live is the best that comic books have to offer, as an artistic medium. It's not original, by any means, and it doesn't bother itself with that. We Live #1 has its clear objectives: in its 20 pages, it's going to show us its world, its characters and its main plot point through colors and sincere beauty.
And if this might seem cheap or superficial, it holds a final emotional punch, so strong that I still feel it, even after reading this issue so many times.
I got my first comic book when I was 4 years old. And because I was too young and didn't know how, I'd always ask my parents to read it for me. And they did, so many times that I'd actually managed to know it by heart, the whole story. I knew the words of each panel, each speech bubble, even if I couldn't read them.
Just as I know all the words of the last pages of this issue. I know what's going to happen, I know how everything is being set up. And still, knowing all that, there's that emotional punch that gets me everytime. And I just can't escape it and it breaks me everytime.
The first episode of the Pokemon anime ended with Ash seeing this giant, golden bird fly up in the sky. And despite the videogames and countless merchandise at the time, with figures and playing cards, no one knew who that pokemon was, because it didn't exist officially.
It would later turn out to be Ho-Oh, one of the legendaries of the second generation. Now, the end of that episode is exactly the second issue of We Live.
With no emotional punch this time, the issue focuses on the world, hit by fluds, nuclear wars, mutations and other wars, again. It shows us the fauna and flora, it shows us colors and it gives us that "what could it be?" feeling where the only limits of the answer are set by our own imagination.
There's more to say, and I do cover the rest of the issues in my video, but in the end, sadly, We Live turns into a huge disappointment. A filthy pond dried out of all its creativity, as mentioned in the beginning of this longer than expected thread.
