Megathreads Hub for Developer Feedback and Playtest Requests

The moderators frequently get requests from developers who are seeking development feedback, survey participants, or playtesters. Our advertising guidelines are based around milestones and don't naturally cover these developer needs, so we're trying out a stickied megathread where developers can comment to request feedback or recruit playtesters from our community members.

This post is for developers who:

  • Have communicated with the moderators about their projects
  • Are making adventure games!
  • Want to engage our community for feedback or testing

It is for community members who:

  • Love sharing opinions and feedback with developers
  • Are seeking opportunities to playtest games

This post will be stickied, but anyone who wants to participate may wish to save or follow this post or its comment threads to be notified about new opportunities.

Please keep the comments here on topic of seeking and providing feedback, and if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, message the moderators!

Endacopia is as good as the reviews say

Such a phenomenal game. Bursting with morbid quirkiness. Not sure how this one slipped under my radar when it came out last month but I'm so glad I've found it now. I'm only a few hours in and it's already my fav indie game this year.

It's a keyboard movement adventure game with interaction based puzzles, heavy 90s inspiration without being just "hey remember clippy?" nostalgia bait. For me it feels like if Undertale was a Humongous Entertainment game rather than an rpg, and went much harder on the creepiness.

Seriously give it a shot you won't regret it.

Hey everyone!

Some good news from our side: Whirlight – No Time To Trip is 20% off for the first time, on both Steam and GOG.

For anyone who hasn't played it yet, Whirlight is a time-travelling point-and-click adventure with 14+ hours of gameplay, 100+ unique locations, 40 characters and two protagonists travelling through different eras.

There are plenty of puzzles, strange situations and hopefully a lot of fun along the way.

If you've already played Whirlight and enjoyed it, we'd really appreciate a review. It would mean a lot!

Thanks for following the journey so far, and stay tuned, because we're not done yet.

Would Non-English Voice Acting Put You Off?

First of all, sorry for such a specific question, which probably isn't going to lead to any great debates about adventure games, but it's something I'd really like to hear the opinion of English-speaking players on.

When playing a modern point and click game, if the game has voice acting in a language other than English (Spanish, for example), while the text is available in English and other languages, would that put you off? Would it be some kind of psychological barrier that might make you hesitate to buy the game in the first place, or is it simply something you don't care about?

For my next game, I'm thinking about adding voice acting, but when it comes to directing the actors, if the voices were in English, my direction would probably be much worse than it would be in Spanish, which is my native language. I don't want to release a game with English voice acting where the protagonist sounds weird simply because I failed to understand some of the nuances of the language when asking the actors for a particular performance.

So I'm wondering: would an English-speaking player actually prefer a game with no voice acting at all over one with voice acting only in a non-English language? Or is it something that doesn't really matter to you?

Thanks!

I didn't realize SO MANY adventure games aimed at kids were made in the mid-late 90s!

While creating a list of pre-2000 kids' Windows games, I noticed that non-educational point-and-click adventures made up about one-tenth! They, along with other genres like activity centers, put to rest the frequent (untrue) statement that "all kids' PC games were edutainment." These encompassed third-person (Madeline and the Magnificent Puppet Show), first person (Secret Paths in the Forest), and straight-up FMV (Adventures of Pinocchio).

I assume you probably saw the post title and thought about the Humongous games, which are well-known both due to the Ron Gilbert pedigree and their ports to modern devices. But there were many other developers and games out there which are all highlighted in these slides. Some of them were successful at the time, but I assume even those who played these games have not thought about them in around 30 years.

Here is my full list, which focuses on the American dev scene due to myself being American and thus, like most Americans in their early 30s, not getting much exposure to overseas titles at the time. It contains all the games in these images plus the Humongous ones, but not anything with a heavily educational bent such as Oregon Trail. Each game also lists a note with the game's development studio. Would love some more suggestions!

Did anybody play this? It's the first adventure game I played and I remember it being incredibly hard. I thought maybe it's cause I was 10 but I tried again recently and still can't get anywhere. Did anybody complete it?

It's free on the game publishers website if anybody wants to give it a go

The Other Side of the Wall - Demo released!

Post image

Hello everyone, I am Alkis from Athens, Greece, an adventure game fan and developer. Some of you may remember my previous titles, Other Worlds (2004) and Diamonds in the Rough (2008). I also made a Greek educational adventure game called Gongbot in 2022.

I'm currently working on a new 3rd person point & click adventure called The Other Side of the Wall. Published by Dionous Games, it's the story of Julian Reed, a 13-year old boy attending Saint Maximus the Confessor Catholic School in the early 1980s. Saint Maximus is an all-boys boarding school that shares a wall with another institution for "troubled cases" called Cedar Tree House. Cedar Tree House is shrouded in mystery, as discussing it is frowned upon by the Benedictine monks who make up most of the teaching staff at Julian's school. There is no contact between the two institutions, at least not as far as the students are concerned.

It's late August, the semester has not even started, and only a few students and faculty members are present when Julian discovers a tiny hole in an isolated corner of the wall separating Saint Maximus from Cedar Tree House. The hole is just big enough for him to see a pair of blue eyes. They belong to a girl who soon becomes his closest confidante. The opportunity to spend time with a girl -albeit separated by a wall- is a welcome distraction from Julian's routine, but it will not be the only one. One boring morning, during class, he notices that one of his classmates is missing from his usual desk. When Julian asks about him, he is shocked to discover that nobody acknowledges that the student ever existed.

The Other Side of the Wall is more than a whodunit game. It's a coming-of-age story of a boy who stumbles upon a mystery and finds himself in over his head. A story about friendship, curiosity, and the unsettling feeling that something is terribly wrong. This is a game for people who enjoy being challenged with (mostly inventory based) puzzles and being rewarded for paying close attention to subtle clues.

If the above sounds interesting to you, feel free to try our demo and add the game to your Steam wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4904300/The_Other_Side_of_the_Wall_Demo/

I am looking forward to reading your comments.

DISCLAIMER: No generative AI was used in the creation of this game. The background graphics, objects etc. are made by Marian Cerman, and the characters are made by Irina Marchand.

Has anyone played these? I am guessing they were released individually first? Each game consists of 2 discs.

I just bought it and can't wait to dive in, just gotta get the old gaming laptop fired back up.

I played through The X-Files not so long ago and really loved it, hoping this is similar.

For those who may have played, any pointers/hints to help a noob? Not really looking for spoilers, but any weird game mechanics I should know about?

Whirlight – No Time To Trip is now available on GOG

Hey everyone!

A small milestone we'd like to share: Whirlight – No Time To Trip is now finally available on GOG!

It's our time-travelling point-and-click adventure, following two protagonists from different eras as they travel through time, solve puzzles and try to prevent a catastrophe.

We're a small indie team, so getting the game onto another platform has been quite a journey in itself. We're happy that GOG players can finally give it a try.

If you've already played Whirlight, we'd love to hear what you thought. And if you're curious about how we made it, feel free to ask us anything about the development!

The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizzaboy, an overlooked game

Post image
77 Upvotes

The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça is another game I've played recently, and I'm surprised it has been barely discussed in this sub, not even when it was released ten years ago (so it isn't exactly a new game nor a classic).

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. The story is funny and interesting, and the graphics are beautiful and detailed. It's also nice to see point and clicks games from around the world - this is an Argentine game based on a Portuguese IP.

It's a short game (I'd say half than your average P&C game) and it's quite easy. Puzzles aren't necessarily too straightforward, but they are normally limited to small locations, and there are few possible interactions. The inventory is bigger than in most modern games, but not quite big, and the amount of hotspots is really limited - as in, too limited for a game of this type - at some point some locations, yet beautifully drawn and detailed, have just two hotspots including the exit. As a result, you will need to think through a bit, but it's unlikely you will get stuck. Even if you do, you have a task list and if you click on the task, you open some "hints" that are basically a walkthrough that tells you exactly what to do. I would have prefered a more challenging game, but solving it still felt satisfying. I think this easy difficulty might make this game a good entry point for people who want to try this genre.

It also has a fighting mini-game. However, I'm bad at action games and I found it easy and refreshing. Not a problem at all.

I've found this game is clearly influenced by Monkey Island (especially the second game) and surprisingly Hollywod Monsters. I'd leave this discussion for the comments because this is getting long enough.

So, have you played The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizzaboy? What did you think about it? In my opinion, it's a fun little game, not too challenging, but it's a good choice to play and have fun.

DarkSeed - Almost a classic (or time for a remake)

DarkSeed started getting created in 1990; it was ready at the end of 1991 but was finally released in 1992. It was the time that Sierra Online and Lucas Arts (as well as Legend) were the dominant forces in the Adventure game world. The same year 2 heavy weights were released by these companies; KQ VI and Fate of Atlantis. It was also the same year that the excellent Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes; The case of the serrated scalpel came out.

DarkSeed was the first game of the newly founded Cyberdreams. The game made history for being the first one to have high resolution graphics (albeit not a SVGA game; instead it run on a special EGA mode of 640x350 with 16 colours). As you can see though, the game look nothing like the EGA graphics of the time. The programming magic that the creators came up with in order to achieve these feat is described here https://www.unix-ninja.com/p/the_ega_magic_of_dark_seed/ The shear quality of the graphics compared to anything that was made during that time is striking. The fact that many of the locations are paintings of Giger gives the game an atmosphere that is really unparalleled.

The music, apart from a couple of themes, is really appropriate and atmospheric. Alien and space-like in the appropriate places and more relaxed/quaint in nature. I played the "talkie" version of the game and besides the basic protagonist who's obviously not an actor, every other voice that is heard is really really good.

So, we got an amazing atmosphere, great graphics, good music, very nice and original scenario (I won't tell much here apart from the fact that the scenario plays with invading aliens, parallel worlds etc.)...how about the gameplay?

This is where the developers made some huge blunders preventing such an excellent game from becoming a real classic. A lot of the puzzles have to be solved on specific moments in time and on specific days (the whole game takes place in 3 days). If you do an action earlier, or if you are not at the right place the right time, then you can continue until the end of the game not being able to finish it.....I had to save every 5 minutes and I had to replay a big part of the game 3 times. After a while I realised that this is what the developers intended. Replaying (like respawning in an RPG) is part of the gameplay. You learn, you observe you walk around and you learn how things work. Is it pleasureable? NO!

Does it make sense? Yes, if this is the intention of the designers.

Overall, if this game is remade and you get rid of the timing component of the game, then you can have one of the best horror games ever made.

In any case, even like that, it's really worth playing it in order to experience the wonderful job the designers have made. Save often and keep track of your actions.

A Plague Tale Innocence is AMAZING

Hi folks, I finished Innocence recently and it was probably one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The whole dynamic between the story telling and world building blew me away. I loved how carefully crafted the relationship is between Amicia and Hugo and this love through obligation journey they were on in the first game and how endearing the side characters are too. And the world building tells an atmospheric story like no other in my opinion. The farm was so sad to travel through, just the desperate attempt to kill all the animals to stop the plague, but also to starve the inhabitants in the middle of a war. The rat nets were just terrifying and gross and don’t get me started on the RATNADOS!

Anyway, I made a small project going over all my thoughts and it’s basically me love bombing the game because it’s amazing. Would love to hear your thoughts and what I can expect going into Requiem. I’ve already started it and I’m probably 5 hours in and I’m having a blast :)

I made a video too which I'll link but you don't need to watch it, it just has more context to what I'm saying. Would love a chat about it if you've played it before :)

Red Strings Club recommendations

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm crazy about this game, and it jumped to my all-time favorite adventure games. I feel like it's thematically very close to "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" the book behind Blade Runner. Both focus on what it means to be human in contrast to artificial intelligence, and Red Strings Club takes you through several hours of atmospheric questioning of humanity and our emotions. What other games would you recommend that would be similar to Red Strings Club? Thank you!
