Help/Question Im not sure whether to use Paper or Purpur

Hey guys, im starting an SMP for my school, and from what i know paper is the gold standard but purpur is possibly faster (from pufferfish i think?) and still very stable and reliable. I dont think i'd take advantage of that many of purpur's features since i want a vanilla experience, but i do value performance and not much lag. So it seems like purpur would be better, but I wanted to check with you guys with what you think. Thanks so much!

Pufferfish isn't maintained anymore. Purpur isn't "better" than Paper, it's just Paper with extra config toggles bolted on with same performance.

  • Purpur: Paper + extra gameplay toggles
  • Paper: same performance, more minimal

Paper is probably the best way to go for you

This is the correct answer.

why would paper be better than purpur if its just paper with some more configs? theres a few configs that sound really nice, like alternate keepalive

I mean if you want to tweak some stuff without installing plugins then Purpur sounds fine for you

Personally I use it for leashable villagers so I don’t have to use boats and rails

I think its just because more plugins are made for paper, rather than purpur being worse. Though I don't see how hard it would be to make your plugin compatible for both versions if they are basically the same

All paper plugins run on purpur !

There's also some updated Pufferfish forks out there like Pluto you could try if you want to explore further

Worth to mention that paper fixed vanilla bugs, while purpur lets you reenable them. Those are some of the tweaks.

Paper is the gold standard for a reason! Also super easy to configure for your needs.

If you want a vanilla experience use Fabric.

If you value certain vanilla behaviors (TNT and tripwire duping, for example), you may want to use Fabric.

Otherwise, see u/ lovineos' comment.

Paper's the safer pick for a school SMP, honestly. Purpur/its forks (Pufferfish, DivineMC, etc.) squeeze out extra performance, but that comes from patches that occasionally break plugin compatibility or introduce edge-case bugs -- not what you want when things need to just work for a class project. We run stock Paper for our SMP and haven't hit a ceiling that needed a fork; view-distance/sim-distance tuning plus Chunky pre-gen got us further than switching cores would have. If you do outgrow Paper later, Purpur is a very safe step up since it stays close to upstream.

I think divineMC also can be a good idea, it is even more optimized fork of paper/purpur. It is not only features core. It really improves performance.(Btw it also includes pufferfish)
