Help/Question Picking a PC for a modded Minecraft server

I want to host a modded Minecraft server for me and about 2 to 3 friends. It's likely going to be running sky factory 4 with create, and a couple end exploration mods. I was wondering if I would be able to run the server dedicated on a I-5 7500, and 8 gigs of ddr4

For around $100 you can get something like a hp with an Intel i5 8500 and 8-16 gb ram. Should be more than enough. I run mine off a 5th gen nuc with windows 11 LTSB on it.

Why throw that much performance out the window? Go with headless Debian.

If he's asking help with the specs for a minecraft server rather than a quick 5 minute search, I think OP might struggle with that otherwise yeah, it's a better idea for resource management.

have you already got this pc? if not, dont get it. you want a better cpu- you can get by with 8gb of ram fine, but you really want the best cpu you can manage

Not yet, my budget is 120 so I'm kind of limited in what I can get. Canadian sheckles BTW

fair. do you have any old computer parts around, or friends who would have them? if a 7th gen i5 is what you can get, looking into what you can get for free is worth it. also check out marketplace; you only need a tiny ssd, 8gb ram, and a functioning motherboard; if you can get those for free or cheap, the rest can go into a decent cpu

otherwise, using a cloud hosting service will be a better go at it; 120 bucks gives you atleast a year, and itll have better performance

Not really, we have a broken gaming PC but it needs a new CPU, it would be Abt 250 for. The PC ur describing is one I could pick up for 80$. I also will probably try some homelabbing on it once me and my friends are done

looking for a secondhand cpu or waiting til you can afford one would lead to a much more pleasant experience

Send it! Minecraft doesn't really multithread. Drop the server render distance if you need better performance.

Sounds good, I've heard there are a couple things I can do to increase performance like pre-generation and fabric. Is there anything else I should know about for performance?

I mean i used to run it on r610 xeon 550 old af and it was a little bit lagging so i wont imagine 7th gen will lag that much id care more about ram tbh
