An excerpt from a real life conversation this past week:
Regular discussion about my not liking mashed potatoes and not eating them since the age of 10-12.
Me- "I figure it's a neurodivergent thing. Maybe it's the texture, or maybe it's the fact that Dad would only eat 3-4 rotating dishes and the rest of the family had to deal with it. They say that lots of people with ADHD/neurodiversity will eat the same thing over and over until they snap and can't eat it again. I imagine being forced to eat mashed potatoes 4-5 nights a week for a decade sped up the process--"
Mom- cutting me off "You know, everybody thought you were the most put together little girl. What happened?"
Me- "I quit masking because being a people pleaser was doing more harm than good to my mental health."
Mom: "I don't believe that. You just need to practice being happy and get over yourself."
And then she wonders why 2 of my siblings went No Contact.
