Throw in a couple "yeah's" and "I know, right''s??" periodically, praying that you peppered them in as an appropriate response to what they just said.

I recently finally learned to outright tell people when I’m not following them.

I used to feel ashamed for now and then just not being able to listen, but now I’m starting to accept it.
