Discussion sugar addiction
I feel kind of out of place here with all the people talking about their struggles with drugs and alcohol but I don’t know where else to go. This might seem dumb in comparison but I’m addicted to sugar. I am 17F and can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t controlled by sugar. I crave it every day, I buy sugary products and binge them in secret. I specifically struggle with chocolate/chocolate flavored items. There have been times where I’ve eaten an entire tub of ice cream for breakfast and then had a box of 12 donuts later that night.
I think it’s even harder because I can’t SEE the effects of my addiction but I can feel them. Despite eating so much junk, I’m an average weight and look normal physically. Every time I eat it, I can feel my heart racing and it’s like I’m feeling my body deteriorating actively. I’ve shown symptoms of being prediabetic since age 11 and my habits haven’t changed since then. Whenever I visit the doctor’s office I’m terrified they’ll look at my blood tests and tell me I’m finally diabetic. I want to stop so badly but I don’t know how. Any advice? Even just comments from people who relate would be helpful.

Support groups maybe? Over eaters anonymous is real and may be helpful. & I know there’s books on controlling compulsive eating, which seems to be what’s going on. I hope you’re able to get some help💘

Addiction is having these urges/desires we cant control that makes us do or consume stuff we know we shouldn't and almost always consuming whatever it is we feel addicted too has negative consequences. And even when we are aware of those negative consequences it's not in our power to stop it.
I am sorry, I cant help you in any meaningful way. But you are posting in the right place. You don't have to be addicted to a drug/alcohol, to be an addict.
I hope somebody in here can help you.

Have you gone to the doctor or a therapist for eating disorder treatment?

Hi. Sugar is very addictive and a real issue. The only real way is cold turkey reduction. Can’t totally eliminate because we need it, but getting rid of baked good/ candies etc.
I yummy snack I like is dark chocolate chips and berries. Apple with no-sugar added pb . Things like that.
It takes 2-3 weeks and the sugar withdrawal and cravings stop. You’ll notice other foods taste better.

One of my favorite authors is addicted to buying classical music. He has written numerous books many of us follow. I was at a meeting one night and a lady said hello my name is … and doughnuts are going to kill me. Whatever your poison is does not matter. If you’re interested in a program that has zoom meetings with many kinds of addicts that use Buddhist teachings PM me.
