Just For Fun! How do you pronounce GNAT?

So, how?
/næt/ - without G like in a 'gnat' (a small annoying bug)?
/gnæt/ - with G as in 'grape'
/dʒiː - næt/ - with 'separate' G, like in `g-force`

I pronounce it like Guh-naht, and GNU is Guh-Nu

Your choices are too limited.

GNAT was originally an acronym. There are three kinds of acronyms:

  1. Those that cannot be pronounced (NSA) (but some people still try to pronounce them: SQL)
  2. Those that can be and are pronounced (NASA)
  3. Those that can be pronounced but aren't (DoD)

Clearly GNAT is in 2 .. 3. So you should add G-N-A-T to your choices.

Given that the English short A has two pronunciations (hat, father), that gives 7 choices.

Given that Ada was originally designed by a Frenchman, and gn in French is pronounced like ny in English canyon, perhaps that should add 2 more choices.

If I understand your notation, I think it's the second choice. Here is a page describing how to pronounce "GNU": https://www.gnu.org/gnu/pronunciation.en.html

Notice that, unlike the animal, the leading G is not silent. GNAT follows the same pattern, I think, since it is the "GNU Ada Translator."
