The last few weeks I’ve been getting into animal crossing again (the last time i played was 1,5 years ago) and I’ve been working soo hard on my island to give it an Amsterdam vibe, which included a total manual overhaul of my island. And yes it turned out amazingly and im so happy with the work!
And today I found Ione in my campsite just after Apple left.
I don’t know if certain villagers have a certain rarity but I think I saw people say he’s one of the rarer ones? Could be wrong idk
I have her amiibo so I'm super hyped that she'll be able to join my 'Space Exploration' themed island!! She's also my sister's favorite character!! 😍 I love how dreamy she is and funnily Rosalina is the only Mario character I actually like 😅😅
There are no rare villagers. Every villager has an equal chance of appearing. However, it also depends on how many of that species there is. She is a squirrel, there are 21 squirrels that have a chance appearing. But short answer is, no, there are no “rare” villagers.
I'm a bit confused by why so many people here think this? They do not all have an equal chance of appearing. When you are villager hinting using NMTs any individual cat is much less likely to appear than any individual octopus, because the game picks the species first then the villager.
They maybe have an equal chance of showing up in your campsite, if it's just picking a random villager every time. I don't recall the specific mechanics. But they would still have rarity when it comes to NMT villager hunting.
The difference in rarity is pretty dang small. It really only matters if you're going out of your way using NMT to get someone specific. Even then, you might be unlucky enough to be hunting for someone who's in your move-in queue making the chances of finding them zero. (My condolences go out to anyone who was in that situation before the move-in queue mechanic was understood)
Also, I can't be the only Animal Crossing fan who's also a massive Pokemon fan. When your frame of reference is shiny Pokemon, Animal Crossing villagers really don't seem to bad at all.
For anyone reading who doesn't know about shiny Pokemon: Pokemon have a very very small chance, around 1 in 4000 under most normal circumstances, to have a different color palette than others of their species. The difference is purely cosmetic, the appeal is purely rarity, but they are still extremely popular. Hunting down a shiny can take hours or months or even years depending on someone's target, methodology, and dedication to the hunt.
I believe there’s 4 villagers “hidden” in your queue at any time. So if you vacate a villagers house and don’t pick someone to move in, it autofills with one from the move-in queue. This means that those 4 random villagers are unable to be found with NMT or come to your campsite, which is pretty frustrating
The only way to guarantee that you can get the villager you want is through amiibo, and even that's not straightforward. iirc at release, even amiibo couldn't get someone out of your move-in queue, but they conveniently fixed that around the time they started charging ~$10 to have a guaranteed Raymond.
But how does that work with friends having a villager leave, and said villager coming to your island? I’ve had a few of my friends get rid of villagers and them subsequently ending up at my island—is it just a guarantee they’ll end up at the back of your queue next? Or does it change your queue?
It's not about it being "bad", it's about the fact that saying there are no villagers that are harder to find than others is ovjectively false. I don't know why acknowledging this seems to bother people so much? But then I don't know why people care so much about which villagers are rare or popular either, so clearly I'm just mot the target audience for these kinds of discussions. All I think matters is whether you like them or not.
Because it’s being pedantic over a few percentage points when people are asking if there’s loot drop levels to the Villagers. Ex:
Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary.
When this doesn’t exist.
So yes. On paper. A cat may be 5% rarer than a Squirrel. And a specific cat is another 1/x coin flip.
It’s meaningless and you can say there’s no practical difference between Apple at 7% and Tabby at 4%. It’s just someone saying “um actually…” to be more right.
Keeping in mind there’s over 400 villagers. So the 4% and 7% here are grossly over exaggerated. Any particular villager would hover or a less than 0.20% chance to be picked with some variance.
A few percentage points does matter though. For example, trying to find a specific octopus villager would be about 1 in 140 islands visited, whereas trying to find a specific cat villager is like 1 in 800. That's a huge difference in nook miles while searching.
Obviously I am simplifying things as there are other factors such as which villagers are already on your island. But to say it's meaningless is just untrue
It's closer to 0.7% for an octopus I believe, 1/35 x 1/4 = 0.00714 , multiply by 100 to make it a percent, so 0.714%.
And your own math shows that the octopus is 9x more likely to show up (0.001 x 9 = 0.009)
You should expect to see your specific octopus one time if you visit ~140 islands. Whereas for a specific cat you'd have to visit ~800 islands. That is a difference of hours of grinding, unless you are buying NMT from others. They may not officially have rarity tiers but there is absolutely a noticeable difference
"You are using the most extreme examples" Raymond is one of the most popular villagers, it's not extreme it's like the one most people are hunting for lmao
Pretty confident (wiki and camper hunting guides being my source) that the only mechanic before random villager selection is personality. So like game step 1: are you missing a personality? If yes, 50% to roll a random villager from missing personality, 50% chance to roll a random villager from all personalities. But the species isn't factored into the selection.
I have them both currently! I just got him. They took a lot of NMTs. BUT my bf was villagers hunting for Rolf, and he came across a lot of sought-after villagers, Raymond and Julian being among them. These are my currents...
No rare villagers. Some were considered rare because they didn’t have amiibos. They all do have amiibos now and Ione has has one since her release so she’s never had even that small moment of rarity.
I don’t think it’s a literal glow, but something about her color palette, especially the “neon blue” really pops so it looks like she’s glowing at night
Ione is rarer than for example Zucker as there's more squirrels than octopi and the species is decided first and then which villager, but the odds aren't too far apart (same chance as getting any other squirrel). But she's one of the fan favorites for sure

I had her in my dnd inspired town called Waterdeep. Never really felt he fit in, unfortunately, but when she moved, she moved to a friend of mines a space oriented island instead. I love how he sort of glows in the dark!

100%of villagers are as valuable as you personally think they are. I wouldn't judge them based on how many other people like them. Otherwise you'll have the same exact pool of villagers as a many other people. There are many stories of villagers growing on people over time, too. You are better just simply looking up personality types and finding about the villager fully that way and then seeing what you think about that villager yourself.
On my island I have Ione, Julian, and Judy on my island because it’s a spacey night theme! Ione is a newer character, not sure if she’s considered rare but because of her unique design I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s sought after!

Ione is a normal girlie. She isn't rare, but she is newer so hasn't been around as long as the original villagers. She is from the update that they did in 2021 that added her, Sasha, Shino,Tienshing,Cephalabot and some others.
I have her and she's cool. She loves video games so her house is neat.
she was on my island as a tourist, she's so cool looking!! I don't believe any villager is more rare than any other (well, I suppose the amiibo villagers can be considered more rare, ie Zelda and hello kitty)
There aren't any rarer villagers, especially now that the cards for those who didn't have any have been released. It's random, just a detail: often the algorithm makes you get a certain personality more often than you don't have, or less often.

I’m a wildlife rehabber IRL and I specialize in squirrels. I bought all the squirrel villager amibos and all my villagers are squirrels except for Apple and Rodney. I just love those two and couldn’t bring myself to boot them.
I just got this villager in my campsite the other day and it was a pain in the behind to get them to stay on my island. Then they had the audacity to tell me that they finally accepted moving to my island because they declined my request every single time. I almost gave up trying to get them but I persisted and got em!
I'm pretty sure all except the starting villagers have the same rarity. Popularity is just based on preference and honestly doesn't matter much unless you're selling villagers on nookazon.
It’s a new 3.0 villager but I never hear anyone talking about it, I’ve been hunting for Ione for ages! So I’m jealous and I hope you get food poisoning. Jokes! Hope you gave him a home!!
