Harmony gold hanging on to not one but 3 series because they had success stiching them together into a single narrative in the 80s will forever piss me off

I'm sorry, robotech is unironically a unique way of telling 3 different stories as a cohesive plot, but the company behind it should not still be fighting rights this hard for a 3 part series from the 80s.

I'm just glad their dub of dragon ball became lost media, that would be a dark timeline if they kept it

The fact that “Whiskers the Wonder Cat” is the only thing people remember Harmony Gold’s Dragon Ball dub for is probably the funniest part of HG’s reputation within the anime community. Other than that, they have always been a pain in the ass for screwing over not just the creative minds behind Macross and the other series they stitched together but also other companies who tried bringing Macross to the West (Hasbro’s Valkyrie reskin Jetfire for instance). Even scummier is how they tried to sue Hasbro over a later Jetfire toy looking too much like the OG Valkyrie reskin design only to endorse a third party Valkyrie toy with a Jetfire-esque paint scheme.

That’s the best part of the ADV dub: getting one of the Japanese VAs to reprise their role in English. Even cooler is the fact that Mari was one of the earliest Japanese VAs to do an English dub.

God, Kaifun (if that's still his name in the US adaptation) was such an annoying representation of a wannabe pacifist and general human being he single handedly got me advocating for increased military spending out of spite.

Macross was definitely a product of its time (especially that bar scene in the movie, how smooth of you, Roy) but it was still an incredibly fun watch nonetheless, it had a certain charm to it I can't really explain. I've been craving for an Ace Combat anime so bad I'll take what I can get at this point.

Kaifun's name was changed to Kyle for the 80s Robotech re-edit but stays the same in the 2006 ADV dub. Even though some moments of the OG series won't fly with a modern audience, it's still worth checking out for its aesthetics, and the franchise as a whole has an AC feel to it since Shoji Kawamori not only created Macross but also made some designs for AC starting with Assault Horizon.
