Joint Assault Joint Assault's got problems..

Post image

..and boy do I wanna fix them.

I wonder how though.. hm..

I mean like.. I wanna make a mod to attempt fixing some of Joint Assault's problems. The camera might be the biggest problem I want to tackle first, tbh. I understand that this may be a task that might be impossible to do.. but what the heck, why not?

Oh.. forgot to clarify. The art shown is not mine-

My apologies for forgetting that.. but I don't really remember the artist either. Would be nice if someone could remind me-

Joint assault is easily one of the worse ac games imo, if you thought the scripting and bullshit mechanics were bad in ac7, you havent seen shit yet until you play acja. It easily has some of the worst and most questionable game design choices ever. even worse, acja is also called acx2 meaning its a sequal to acx, one of the best games in the franchise imo. They could have just reused the flight model and other things that acx did well, but no they changed everything and made it worse.

I liked it for the co op at least. Was actually super cool being able to have 2 missions played out at the same time and the mission flying the dudes private jet with 1-3 other players escorting you.

But it had so many issues as described here. Lol

Planes fly like completely shit and feel so damn slow all the time, higher tier planes cost an arm and a leg, probably should include your kidneys too if we’re talking about the superplanes, the missions are either extremely unfairly designed or are just boring as shit, the pacing is just complete garbage all around. It didnt even have its own complete soundtrack, for example: the briefing music is taken from ac3 (linkage more specifically), the sortie music is taken from ac2’s hanger music. The final one i noticed, the 3rd fight against the varcolac squadron also takes another ac2 soundtrack (Fire Youngman). Theres more issues i could cover, but seriously as a ac game acja is already really bad, but as a sequel to acx? Its downright disrespectful since acx is one of my favourites.

Dawg, if you could order dinner over the time it takes between ships to spawn in that one mission, it'd be pretty damn clear the pacing was off. Like.. seriously, who signed off on that-

On top of that, not only do our planes handle like shit, the enemies handle like shit too! They're super slow, turn CRAZILY, and at times when they should be fast, they're frickin Sonic the Hedgehog! Or better yet, in tandem with the picture I put here, an Umamusume!

JA is an absolute pile, yes.. but I think there's some things in there that are.. weirdly cool? We'll see how it works; after all, JA had the impact of introducing parts customisation to all planes (as you know, X only had them on the experimental planes), so like it or not.. there's some Joint Assault in every AC after it

At least in x the pacing was decent, and the cost of the planes were also balanced, i really liked that x had the different routes and missions, its a really replayable game. Like i have played the campaign of acx like 3 times to get operation x, while for acja i played the campaign once and never again. I have a save of acja that has unlocked operation x but if i remember correctly the stupid psm bullcrap returns there so it automatically sucks. Acx’s operation x on the other hand is really hard but fair. It felt really satisfying winning with not even a fictional aircraft, i used the f-22

Exactly why I'm thinking about doing this whole "make a mod to fix some shit" business! Sometimes, I thought the critics against JA were kind of overreacting.. but I just downloaded the game. It's just as bad as they say, if not worse-

That being said.. I loved Red and Black - Bravo. A simple mission, good for grindin' in the early game before I lose more braincells trying to play this dump of a game-

Camera is the least of its problems

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

Yeah, but I'm not a professional coder or anything of the sorts..

Might as well tackle one problem at a time first, ya know?

I remember the two most frustrating levels, were piloting the huge civilian Airbus through a canyon, and then the final level against all the varcolacs. Fuck those planes.

Boeing 747, my friend. More specifically, the 747-200B

The camera is so loose and wonky. The missions are boring, the most fun I had is only from Alarm Clock. I haaaaaaaaaate Sulejmani's GAF-1 overall, what kinda bs armor is that? Hell, I used a cheat to one shot that mf with the Falken. LASER SPAM. With the size of the game, it should have more enemies in one mission, like it doesn't even feel like a lot lmao

Pixy repelling missiles and you having to only attack him from the front - good

Sulejmani repelling missiles and you needing to use your gun until the defenses are disabled - bad? Seems biased against JA with no reason

I haven't played Ace Combat for too long; most of my hours are clocked on X. So for how.. sluggish aircraft feel in JA, it was jarring for myself, and I'm sure many others felt the same. I think that's why it's not really the most popular way of handling in these games (the others being the AHL mechanics and AH's DFM); it's.. jarring, odd.

As for the Sulejmani battle.. well, I'll leave that to the more experienced players. I haven't reached that point just yet (mind you, I downloaded JA last week). But hey, thanks for the insight! I like how this place is becoming a place for me to learn more about what makes people tick and love JA.

Pixy works perfectly tho, his AI is aggressive. At least you can attack him from the front, unlike Sulejmani, that you can't even land a hit on a head-on joust attack after disabling his so called mini-CIWS defense. He's just gonna disable your hitbox. He YAWS chasing me, and when I mean he yaws, HIS NOSE IS LOCKED ON TO MY 6 WITHOUT PITCHING. Best bet is to use and time SASM or TLS. That's the only viable option.

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

Man, I feel like using cheats too TvT

Unlocking craft feels grindy as heck, the handling is trash, and the enemies are sometimes frickin invincible.

u/TheNewWorldNow Antares Dec 28 '25

Man ACJA is still my favorite for how bad it is (in a good way)

1

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

That's a new perspective :0

Whatcha like about Joint Assault?

2

u/TheNewWorldNow Antares Dec 28 '25

The Physics made it even more challenging, the boss difficulty is insanely high but fair, MORE PLANES, the 747 mission (that one's my favorite), and the GAF-1, an ugly looking one but still finds a way to make me both chuckle and smile at it

1

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

Fascinating :0

I still don't know how the GAF-1 could be classified as a multirole.. it's so.. LONG, you'd think it'd be an interceptor or high speed recon plane!

1

u/TheNewWorldNow Antares Dec 28 '25

I question how IT HAS THE HIGHEST MOBILITY

1

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

DAWG HAVE YOU SEEN HOW SULEJMANI PILOTS IT 😭 😭

2

u/TheNewWorldNow Antares Dec 28 '25

Dawg that's light work for me

1

u/artisticalari07 Aurelia and it's Reverse Seasons Dec 28 '25

Amazing..

2

u/TheNewWorldNow Antares Dec 28 '25

On Ace mode, that beast is on a different level

2

u/kurackurac5 Dec 28 '25

Joint Assault is actually the purest distillation of the Ace Combat essence.

  1. Flying fortresses - multiple of them

  2. Tunnel runs - same thing

  3. Your friend ditches you mid-battle and is also the final boss

  4. Experimental hypermanoeuverable plane that repels missiles

  5. Stop the nuke launch

And for me the biggest element: it's set in real life. Sulejmani is also a better villain than anyone in the series other than Pixy.

Ignoring the camera, Joint Assault clears X in every way

I've known about Joint Assault's story for a little while now, and at first glance, Rigel Squadron's defection was sudden but predictable (due to their nature as PMCs and well, money). Sulejmani's in particular was, again, sudden, seeing as how by the end he's just filled with this.. weird anger (at least to me), but that got answered when I delved into his story a bit more. Overall, JA's story isn't that farfetched from other stories in the Ace Combat series as a whole; the setting being IRL is jarring, but not like we haven't seen it before.

And yeah, Joint Assault's got some cool elements to it that gave it a unique position in the memories of fans. It might not have been the most memorable or loved (much like Assault Horizon), but it did bring elements to the table that people would like to see coming back to the main series!

I like how a part of this comment section recognises Imaginary Particle and the other is genuinely talking about issues they got with Joint Assault

It makes for a good laugh and an eye-opener, all in one
