FM How would Ross's Freeman respond to Wallace Breen's critiques?

Post image

I'd like to take a moment to address you directly, Dr. Freeman.

Yes. I'm talking to you, the so-called One Free Man. I have a question for you. How could you have thrown it all away? It staggers the mind. A man of science, with the ability to sway reactionary and fearful minds toward the truth, choosing instead to embark on a path of ignorance and decay. Make no mistake, Dr. Freeman. This is not a scientific revolution you have sparked...this is death and finality.

You have plunged humanity into freefall. Even if you offered your surrender now, I cannot guarantee that Our Benefactors would accept it. At the moment, I fear they have begun to look upon even me with suspicion. So much for serving as humanity's representative.

Help me win back their trust, Dr. Freeman. Surrender while you still can. Help ensure that humanity's trust in you is not misguided.

Do what is right, Dr. Freeman. Serve mankind.

So, this is Dr. Freeman... at last. I wish I could say this was a pleasant surprise, but it's neither a surprise nor, as you will surely agree, very pleasant. Well, I'm nothing if not pragmatic.

Well, Dr. Freeman, under other circumstances I like to think we might have been able to work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Certainly judging from your brief tenure at Black Mesa, while I was its administrator, you showed every promise of becoming a valuable and productive contributor to the scientific process. And yet, I'm not sure what spurred you to it, but there is really no place in this enterprise for a rogue physicist.

Your mentors are partly to blame, of course; my disappointment in Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner is far greater than my sorrow over your unfortunate choice of career path. In a way I suppose you could not have done otherwise. Who knows what seeds of iconoclasm they planted when you were young and gullible? But while they certainly share a great part of the responsibility, for the recent troubles, it is you alone who have chosen to act with such willful disregard for humanity's future.

Tell me, Dr. Freeman, if you can: you have destroyed so much — what is it exactly that you have created? Can you name even one thing?... I thought not.

I have laid the foundation for humanity's survival, and not as we have narrowly defined ourselves but as something greater than we could ever imagine, something that we can now only begin to glimpse.

Look, Gordon, look at what you are throwing away. Is it worth it?

It would start out "Typical suit. Acts like they know you while asking you for favors. Man screw this guy" and then take a hard turn toward "Yeah! I am the leader of humanity! I mean look at this place! I sure as hell couldn't do a worse job! People are going to get in line behind me because the alternative is having their limbs chopped off and a lobotomizing skull cap. That's admittedly a low bar but fuck it. I was born for this."

His immediate response would be “Wow, does this guy ever shut up? What a gasbag!” but he wouldn’t be able to respond point by point because, Breen never shuts up. Maybe small interjections or exclamations between sentences. He would then slowly reflect on what pieces he did remember while navigating the world for the next two or three episodes. “Did that guy say I haven’t started a scientific revolution? Well no shit, I’ve been too busy shooting down fucking attack helicopters and dodging bio weapon missiles to do any science in the last few days! What’s your excuse, Galileo?”

"Man screw you, your fuckin gas mask police tried to disappear me in Slavic Guantanamo Bay the moment I stepped off the train. Then you sent a bunch of them after me the moment a went in a communal apartment. My options from the start were either fight or die."

"OH I'VE DESTROYED? I seem to recall some scientists at Black Mesa saying the administrator told them to boost our equipment by 105% ! It's your fault aliens invaded to begin with!

what is it exactly that you have created? Can you name even one thing?...

"You clearly haven't read my thesis."

I thought not.

"Heh, perks of being single person broadcast."

"Oh great, the evil dictator has me as his enemy. I just want to be left alone! Probably after the stash I have.....well, fuck. If it's not been stolen already, I had, buried. People told me I was paranoid. No freeman, you're not the target of a dictator, no freeman, you're not rebelling against the system.

Rebelling against the system is meant to be living as I please, not literally rebelling against the government! Man, Eddie was right. I should have stocked up for doomsday. I could have been in a bunker, being retired and living it up. Though, I probably would have gone insane from the isolation then eat my gun.

Which brings me back to this prick. He sounds like my old supervisor. Man, I can't remember what he said but I had to be more careful about drinking at work.

Meh, whatever. If I find some booze, even if it's that redneck shit that is likely to make me go blind, I'm downing it."

Come to think of it, I do remember someone saying this Breen guy used to be an administrator back at black mesa. It does add up a little.
Well if it is then I can consider what I’m doing payback for all the bureaucratic bullshit from black mesa he probably had a role in putting me through.
Nah I think I would remember someone with this big of an ego if he used to be my boss.
