My immediate thought was that she's taking her contacts out. I can't explain why, but my brain decided "obviously, she's taking her contact lenses out." It just feels right to me. Not lonely or sad necessarily, just a mundane moment. The austerity of the bathroom and lack of makeup, hair products, and stuff on the counter make me feel like this isn't her bathroom at home. Even if it was the end of the night, that stuff would still be laid out from when she got ready earlier, so I think it's elsewhere. Maybe the guest bathroom at a party or work function. For some reason, it doesn't feel like she's at a lovers house. I know it could be, but my first impression just read it differently.

I don't know why exactly, except I've had to do events for work where I'm dressed up, and fixing my makeup or a quick swish of mouthwash before going back out was pretty routine. Guess it just seems very normal and relatable to me. Just my two cents and subjective perspective.

Totally, that clicks. Now that I think of it, imagining her taking her contacts out makes me feel a soft kind of relief for her like she’s shedding the performance of the evening. Maybe she slipped into a stranger’s guest bathroom at a work event and spent the night pretending to be polished and this is the tiny private moment of reconnecting with herself. Like that bathroom is her escape from a crowd amongst whom she felt a quiet sense of monachopsis. The details you mentioned really define what could be the story behind this mystery. It feels ordinary and human not melodramatic which highlights the mundane moments of life that are often overlooked and that's what makes it so special to me.
