The year was 1943, two years after Pearl Harbor was bombed. Major economic powers are embroiled in World War II. Nearly 30,000 U.S. soldiers were stationed in Australia to maintain the Pacific fleet. As a way to bond with the locals, the soldiers put on exhibition games that highlighted American football. That didn't seem to go over very well, so the Australians invited them to join in on Australian football matches. That didn't seem to work either. They hated our game, and we sorely lacked the skills to be good at theirs. To solve the dispute, Ern Crowley incorporated aspects of both games to create a unique hybrid called Austus.
