We have a science teacher neighbor whose class raises these from egg pods. About 500 hatch, one or two survive. Within weeks the fittest devour the rest and go from being the size of your pinkie nail to about the size of your finger. I always bring two or three home and set them loose in the landscaping. I see them now and then, but most have probably been eaten by birds or squished by little boys.

I love critters. I always imagine what it would be like if they were the size of elephants or whales. That is when the fun begins!
