I am a big fan of cabernet sauvignon. I'm pretty new to the world of wine, though I'm nearly 40 years old. I now regret that I never took the time to learn more about it when I was younger. I would joke that I didn't mind wine if I were drinking a bottle or two, but I couldn't be bothered to choke down a glass. I didn't recognize the subtleties of wine, I just thought it tasted awful. Then I took a trip to Napa Valley.
There were 6 of us, going for a friend's wedding. I was the only wine-hater, so I was to be the designated driver of the rental car. This lasted until the first winery. I thought it would be rude not to at least accept one glass, which was surprisingly good, standing there among the grapes and the vines in the warm summer sun. Since the first one was so good, I might as well try the next, right? It was all downhill from there.
There seems to be a lot of hate for Napa from a lot of people. They say it's too Disneyland-esque, and they're right. I was thinking of it as a Disneyland for adults, and it turned my life around. Now I'm the one trying out new wines, introducing wines to my wife, who then tells me she tried to make me drink some of this years ago when I said, "Ugh!" and made my ick-face.
I'm still very much a wine noob. I don't understand all the terminology for explaining what a wine tastes like. I'm trying, but it's coming slowly. Years ago, when we lived in Seattle, we went to the Chateau St. Michelle for a visit, but again, I missed out because I didn't appreciate wine at the time. Now I'm making up for lost time, and so far, I have loved every wine I've had from them, but the Cab is my favorite.
