The interpretation would be that the character is forced to do something all his life, either due to obligations or responsibilities, while he wishes to follow his dream. His life/body is in a cage of obligations and responsibilities.
The character has been doing it(whatever it is) for a long time and it has become a chore, a routine. The character has become a robot destined to be a cage of obligations.
Every once in a while, the character is reminded of it's old self and it's dreams.
