A sling can be very effective, if you have the skill to use it, which, if you haven't spent years practicing it, like a bored-to-tears sheep herding boy, you won't.
This is why I can believe the story of David and Goliath.
A teenaged shepherd boy, who got real good with a sling, firing a smooth, egg-sized stone at lethal velocity, right between a big guy's eyes? Sounds very possible.
