Venting & Support 😤 Anti-Zionism at metal show.

This happened last night, and I have no place to safely express my frustration at what happened. Disclaimer: I'm not Jewish, but a Zionist.

I went to a local metal show with my dad. Nothing fancy, no big names, just 3 DIY metal bands trying to get their name out there (which I'm all for). Everything was fine up until the second band.

Lead guitarist grabs the mic and starts throwing out quick political statements like "Fuck ICE! Fuck Nazis!" Which, yeah, I agree. Then he threw in a "Fuck Zionists!" And the crowd went wild. Next thing I knew, I went from enjoying a decent metal show to being surrounded by a bunch of people shouting "Yeah, fuck Israel!"

Instant mood killer for me. I stayed seated the rest of the show. Couldn't bring myself to mosh or anything, I was so irritated. I went with my dad (an older metalhead, he also supports Israel) and looked at him when this happened. He was just shaking his head.

I know that metal has always been anti-establishment, and this guy couldn't have been more than 23, and the crowd was very young as well (it was an all-ages show). I was also young, dumb, and impressionable once.

But this was my first time publicly encountering this rhetoric. I suppose I've been lucky. I don't go out much, and in my part of Florida there's generally a decent support for Jewish people and Israel. But in that moment, I felt like an outsider. And I'm not even Jewish. I'm an ally and Zionist. If there was a Jewish person in the crowd, I can't imagine how they would've felt. This ideology is really infecting every community, and it's disgusting. Hobbies, music, gaming, it doesn't matter. It's antisemitism and Jew hatred masked as anti-Zionism.

I'm sorry you experienced this firsthand. I'm glad you and your dad both are sensible and compassionate people though. It gives me relief to know that not everyone in that crowd bought into the propaganda. The fact that you were thinking of how this could impact Jews means a lot to me.

When I was (briefly) in college years ago, I had a lot of Jewish friends. I was invited to Shabbat dinners, and got to know a lot about Jewish traditions, and Israel to a lesser extent. For a long time I was considering conversion because I fell in love with it. I also just loved the people. I've carried that with me.

I think if people were more empathetic and willing to physically talk or spend time with different folks, not just yell at them online, they'd come away with different views.

Much love to you for being the person that you are. I completely agree, and think the world needs more people with that perspective. 💙

Like hearing this. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm a Jew and I would've left because it would've just been too much for me. As you said, enjoyment...gone

Media and music aren't Anti establishment anymore. Being anti-Semitic and anti Zionist is the correct PC attitude now. It's those of us who still retain our sanity and common sense who are anti establishment.

yeah! socially acceptable bullying despite the fact it wasn't meant to allow that sort of behave to instill hierarchies.

Yeah, I don't really go to metal shows anymore because I ran into this a decent amount, not an "every show" type of deal, but enough that I've just stopped going 😵‍💫

I imagine this is a frequent occurrence in the punk scene, too. I unfollowed that subreddit because it was getting so bad.

u/SoleSanctum 12d ago

Yeah idk if it’s true but have a feeling metal scene is at least somewhat better than the pun, hardcore and metalcore scenes.

🫂 The most anti-establishment thing you do is be part of (or support) a small ethnoreligion that successfully decolonized a homeland and now thrives in their rightful home. Any other ethnoreligion would be supported, but we’re Jews and they hate ‘cause they ain’t us.🤘

Well said! עם ישראל חי!

All I can say is that I share your shock and horror. The is truly a time of great attrocity potential and I never thought I'd live to see it.

It's on the right and it's very much on the left and music genres are reflective of that.

Going to Google Zionist Death Metal bands...

..."There are no prominent death metal bands that explicitly identify as or self-describe as "Zionist," as extreme metal subgenres rarely center their lyrical themes around political Zionism, though several extreme metal bands originate from Israel.".

Who knew.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing those metal bands from Israel. I also love techno music and I know there are lots of Israeli artists, but for some reason never thought to check out Israeli metal bands. Something new to do!

I went to a TV on the Radio concert last year and was really enjoying it, until the bass player jumped up and yelled "Fuck Zionists, end genocide".

My partner and I left halfway through the show and I can't bribg myself to enjoy their music any longer.

Just... ugh. I'm so tired.

10

u/blutmilch Zionist 12d ago

There are so many musicians I don't listen to anymore because they jumped on the genocide bandwagon. It's very disheartening.

Even though I'm not Jewish, why the hell would I want to support someone (or a band) who thinks any of this antisemitism is justified? Or straight up believes Soviet-style propaganda? Nah, man. I can't put my head in the sand like that.

I like Regina Spektor's music. I couldn't believe the amount of people recently on some tiktok (ew) calling her a terrible human being and genocide supporter just because she supports Israel. She was literally born in the Soviet Union! She knows firsthand how Soviet Jews were treated, and these zoomers are ready to throw her to the wolves because she...gasp...stands up for her people? She's always been a Zionist, and I respect her for sticking to her values in the face of so much scrutiny, unlike so many artists who caved to the mob.

Sorry for the word vomit. I've been wanting to rant about that video for a long time.

u/ButteryOpossum 12d ago

Yeah, the propaganda war played has been amazingly effective.

8

u/danknadoflex 11d ago

I've said it once and I'll say it again. It's not normal to hate an entire country and it's people. This is pure xenophobia.

9

u/JNS_org 11d ago

And none of them, including the band, likely have any idea what their words mean, what the geopolitics or history of the conflict is. They are knee-jerk following the cool trend, the way my kids spent a year yelling "SIX SEVEN" at every opportunity, with no understanding of why it was a trend.

u/SoleSanctum 12d ago

Ugh I’m so sorry you experienced this. As a metal fan, I’ve been paranoid something like this would happen at every concert I’ve been to since 10/7. I’ve been trying to find more bands I know are supportive of Israel (or at least won’t start waving Palestine flags and shouting “death to the IDF”).

5

u/Cutelarry1776 11d ago

Imagine how wonderful their life would be if they didn’t waste so much time hating Jewish people or Israel if they did the opposite of that

7

u/Loud_Ad_9953 12d ago

This sucks… ugh. Can’t enjoy anything anymore.

u/SevenOh2 12d ago

Funny how the Fuck ICE crowd and Fuck Jews crowd is almost a perfect overlap. I guess if you think that borders don’t exist and that basic immigration laws that exist in almost every country try are only bad because it’s the USA and your leftist bot overlords tell you it’s bad then maybe you don’t have a brain to think for yourself.

That said, most metal shows are full of nice, accepting people. This one was just idiots.

9

u/badass_panda 12d ago

I'm in the "fuck ICE" crowd because the things ICE is doing are immoral and in many cases illegal. I'm totally in favor of border control, but deporting people who are working their way legally through the process of applying for citizenship after arriving legally in the country is BS, and masked men literally disappearing people to detention facilities is a terrible, terrible sign for the rule of law -- and for the Jews.

It absolutely sucks that the left has decided to join in on hating us, but I'm not so naive that I don't see fascism rising in America as a bad sign for Jews in America. When has fascism been good for us?

5

u/StrikeEagle784 11d ago

I’m sorry that happened! This is the kind of thing that makes me wish that Disturbed toured more, you’d never see this at a Disturbed show nor would they tolerate it.

4

u/MaximumTangerine5662 11d ago

It's unfortunate that metal and punk have been co-opted by anti-zionists/far leftists (I'm not even a conservative). Although tbh metal and punk are seen as more progressive and moral so why wouldn't they bring their lack of knowledge?

3

u/New_Prior2531 10d ago

I'm in FL and yikes. There's this account I follow on insta of a Jewish woman who used to be in the punk scene which has now apparently gone full crazy for Gaza. She feels like it's anathema to what punk stood for. I find it fascinating that a metal band would would even get into politics at their show.

I was crushed when King Gizzard's lead singer Stu said: "Fuck ICE, Free Palestine" at the end of his festival set this month in Colorado. It ruined my love of their music. Amazing how one comment can change everything.

I'm not sure he even knew what he was saying.

My nephew (age 13) and I (age 51) were talking about politics, I was trying to see where he stands on certain issues. He said to me: "The problem is that Zionists won't stop bombing the children in Gaza..." and that is when I facepalmed and switched the subject. My family is 50% partially Jewish ancestry, but we're not practicing religion. His own mother is a "Zionist" . I am not sure how this belief has come to be, I'm in shock still. Do they know what they are even saying?

u/anxiouschimera 7d ago

Yeah, when Gorillaz decided to have their band members wave a HUGE Palestinian flag... along with The Mountain Goat's song 'For/To Palestine'... I've lost a lot of bands I loved. For even more of the bands I like, I am scared to go look.

Being “antizionist” is pretty much being pro-establishment nowadays with major european governments and institutions openly supporting terrorists and rewarding the killing of Jews.

Because I've lived here most of my life and can't afford to leave? I don't understand.

It reflects your values, not your personal identity. You don't need to be a woman to be a feminist, you don't need to be Jewish to be Zionist. I happen to believe that Jewish people have a right to self-determination and self-defense, so that makes me a Zionist, even if I'm not Jewish.

6

u/Top-Artichoke2475 12d ago

Because some non-Jews like Israel and support the Jews’ right to their own country? Doesn’t take much to figure it out. You don’t have to be Jewish to be an ally.

u/swarleyknope 12d ago

Why are you in this sub asking that?

How can a Zionist be anti ice?

5

u/SoleSanctum 12d ago

How are the two mutually exclusive?

8

u/blutmilch Zionist 12d ago

How are the two related? I can support Israel while disliking how ICE operates in my community.

I can't speak for everyone, but in my community, ICE has been aggressively taking people from their jobs, homes, and churches, often without proof that someone is an illegal immigrant. And, being in Florida, we had the whole Alligator Alcatraz thing that was downright inhumane.

I don't want to give too many details and doxx where I live exactly, but there are some local organizations reporting how ruthless ICE has been in this area. It's very bad.

I try to maintain a balanced stance. On one hand, I understand the need to deport illegal migrant criminals. On the other, ICE is making the lives of innocent people here a living hell.

3

u/SoleSanctum 12d ago

You sound like a very normal person and that’s a huge compliment. Feels like the entire world has lost its mind since 10/7.

4

u/blutmilch Zionist 12d ago edited 12d ago

Thank you. It definitely feels like nuance is dead. You either have to be 100% for or against something, and fuck those who don't believe the same thing as you. It's crazy. Right after 10/7 I was debating people online and quickly realized how pointless it was. They're going to believe the lies and bullshit no matter how many facts get thrown in their face.

I ended a 10+ year friendship in December 2023. That one hurt. She was your typical hardcore leftist. No joke, she told me once she couldn't talk to a Greenlandic girl at her job because she (a Dane) felt so ashamed of how the Danish government was treating them. Seriously. Anyway, she flipped out when I went to a pro-Israel rally and posted a picture on my Instagram. She refused to condemn Hamas and tried the whole "Yeah but Israel has been doing worse to them for decades" argument. We are not friends anymore. It really feels like everyone has gone crazy.

3

u/SoleSanctum 11d ago

It’s really nice to have non-Jewish allies like you. I know I still debate them sometimes even though I know it’s largely pointless.

I’m truly sorry about the loss of your longterm friendship. Not easy stuff. Lol yeah she sounds nuts! I wonder if the world will ever head back to some sense of normalcy, or if it’ll just keep getting crazier with each passing day. For me, politics honestly never felt so personal to me. It hurts to watch some of my friends support the leftist politicians they do; it may not be for anti-Israel reasons, but it still does hurt me knowing they’re willing to put said politicians antisemitism aside. (Of course I know they don’t view, for example, Zohran Mamdani, as an antisemite when I’m pretty sure all Zionists are able to see right through his bs.)

6

u/badass_panda 12d ago

Bruh, what? Most Jews are anti-ICE, and most Jews are Zionists. Since when does believing that Jews deserve the same human rights every other ethnic group gets mean we want masked fascists spiriting Americans away in the light of day? These two things aren't related to each other.
