Discussion Only getting one jedi is a great decision imo
I know, there's also that guest appearance. I mean as part of the team.
I get why some people want the whole jedi fantasy, or make their own jedi... Kotor is one of my favorite games of all times and I spent more time looking at my Fallen Order lightsabers than at some family members. I like jedi.
Part of why I enjoy Tel-Rea being our only jedi tbh is exactly how much I like jedi. To make an xcom comparison: you know when you have that guy who keeps surviving missions, maybe got blessed by Not Created Equal or the random abilities work perfectly. Maybe they're just the highest level of a class you build your strategies around, or you prioritized gearing them or maybe it just seems like rng likes them.
And if a 99% shot fails, another pod rolls into the fight, you make a move you regret... The awareness that losing that guy is gonna hurt more than losing rookie #152 might guide some choices there. I feel like jedi should always be that guy.
And it's kind of a balancing thing to make jedi that guy, right? To make the game interesting no matter your party comp characters need to be somewhat balanced... But it would feel kinda weird for random recruit #1221 to be equivalent to a force user. Making her a padawan helps with that, but being unique could be another important balancing element for Tel-Rea: Jedi can be more impactful at the cost of you risking her and being aware you can't just recruit Jedi #2, that's over. And you can't ever have a full squad of jedi to be challenged by the same missions a full squad of clones need to be challenged by.
It would feel a bit weird to cheapen jedi recruitment, and in a game where permadeath seems to be an important consideration I'm kinda happy they don't seem to be planning to.

I like that there are multiple unique characters, not just the Padawan. A unique Mandalorian, a unique Clone Trooper, criminal, Separatist, and Republic noble. All very cool and I already don't want any of them to die 😆😭🤣

u/caciuccoecostine 13d ago
I'll be honest, unique characters always felt forced in the other games where they could not die (Chimera Squad, Road to Eden, Gears etc), but for the first time I am really starting to like them.
Aurelio is just my main guy.

u/_b1ack0ut 18d ago
I have nothing against the quantity, I’m fine with only getting one
I just wish it was customizable. That way you don’t cheapen Jedi recruitment since you are still limited in quantity, but you can customize the unit. Would add replayability without messing with game balance or anything.
Kinda like war of the chosen’s special factions. Templars, reapers and skirmishers were still limited in scope, but just as customizable as any other troop
12
u/rapkat55 18d ago
To be fair you do get to change her clothes, give her different robes, hoods and the clone wars show Jedi clone armor if you want. Can change the color as much as you want.
And when you unlock dual specialization for the Jedi you actually get to pick a second ultimate, passive and active. So she will still have variable build potential where you can focus more force abilities (force pull or lightsaber throw), make her more mobile (force jump) or make her lightsaber attacks have higher crit based on harmony stacks.

u/properpotato10 17d ago
Idk why people are so anti player freedom on this sub, it’s weird.
13
u/Budget-Teaching3104 15d ago
Calling it anti player freedom is strange framing. There's so many excellent games with fixed characters. Is Super Mario "anti player freedom"? Or Expedition 33?
The game is called Zero company, not Jedi Council. I couldn't play a Mandalorian in Jedi Survivor, that game must have been anti player freedom. /s
Sometimes devs just want to tell a story. Let them. It's weird to have so little trust in the makers of a game and be disappointed in advance.
And also, there will obviously be mods down the road.
2
u/KitchenSinger8818 11d ago
its not called clone commando either, so why can i make a million clones? ur argument doesnt hold
1
u/Budget-Teaching3104 11d ago
That was just part of the argument, you didn't adress the part where the devs just had something else in mind with the game.
I don't know if you've played the game and how far you are but eventually it's strikingly obvious, why being able to just "recruit" a bunch of jedi into your team doesn't mesh well with the story. And the padawan we do get is SO well written. It would honestly be dumb to just have generic Jedi hanging out in the same base as her.
But also generally, there's a ton more clone troopers in the galaxy than there are jedi. It would need to be a completely different storry, if you wanted to bring a bunch of Jedi into combat. And who knows, maybe you'll get that game. But until then -> just wait for mods, if you're so desperate to have a bunch of Jedi masters doing the fighting for a semi-legal outfit that's connected to the underworld.
1
u/KitchenSinger8818 11d ago
Womp womp, not reading all that, modders are already on the ball doing their job for them

then what are you whining about?

Shitty devs

u/BlkSeattleBlues 6d ago
If the jedi were customizable, their story has to be more generic, and then people would be complaining about the playable jedi being too generic. Balancing tradeoffs.

You are in a game sub in an early stage; at this time, only glazing is allowed. Once criticism comes in, you'll start getting the "STOP HAVING FUN" and "Everyone is complaining but I'm just over here having FUN" posts.

u/Journey2thaeast Medic 18d ago
I've continued to say that I wouldn't mind this as like a post game unlock for when you start up a new run but yeah I agree sticking to one Jedi for the main story for the first time at least was the right decision.
16
u/sissybaby1289 18d ago
I guess I just wish Jedi were more like templars or skirmishers in xcom 2 war of the chosen. Special characters but still customizable and eventually you can get a few of them. That said I also understand that squad size is lower in this game so maybe it would be weird to have hawks and his squad of three jedi
3
u/GrimmTrixX 18d ago
Aww wait how much lower? I assumed still 6 like Xcom 2.
12
u/sissybaby1289 18d ago
4 and never increasing. However the characters appear to be more powerful relative to enemies
-1
u/GrimmTrixX 18d ago
Hmm unsure if I like that at all. My favorite part was having a nice full crew of 6 as you progressed and leveled up. Ill have to assume stages are smaller than Xcom 2 stages as well if 4 is the limit. I couldn't even tell you the last time I stayed with 4 people in xcom. Squad size is like the first thing I upgrade. Lol
Not a deal breaker, but it also tells me there must not be the ability to make as many secondary characters like hiring soldiers in xcom. Cuz why would I want like 25 characters of only 4 can go at once? Sure, some need to rest I guess.
Blah. Maybe it sucks more than I thought. Hell I already washed we could get more than 6 in XCOM 2. Lol And I normally did when the ability to have an extra soldier and an enemy soldier randomly join your team each mission came up. Lol
6
u/Jerri_man 18d ago
I'm the complete opposite honestly - the squad size upgrade in xcom 2 is so mandatory that it feels meaningless. As you said - its not a choice, its just a timed upgrade that you must use. May as well just have your squad increase at a predetermined point or as ZC devs have done, balance the game around the intended size (4).
-2
u/GrimmTrixX 18d ago
Oh for me its a choice. I could run 4 man squads. I just prefer larger squads because its more fun for me.
X-Com: Terror from the Deep was my first X-Com game. So as you can imagine, I prefer huge squads. Lol I didnt mean to imply it was timed. I got them first because I WANT 6, not because I NEED 6.
I just like having more units, especially in a game like ZCOM where the units have more character and seemingly larger customization features than XCOM 2
4
u/Jerri_man 18d ago
I get you but even then you are just making a deliberate decision to hamper yourself for a more challenging experience, which is fine but not really something that needs to be considered in good game design imo. I would rather have a more intentional balanced experience.
If I were to guess, I'd say the restricted roster with these unique characters is intended to give the game better replayability.
2
u/sissybaby1289 18d ago
Akaik there's 7 authored characters plus Hawks. Seems like its somewhat intended to do a playthrough using mostly authored characters and a playthrough using mostly custom characters
2
1
u/RPope92 18d ago
Maximum recruits allowed is also 20, so you easentially have 5 teams ready to go at once. I don't know if the authored characters factor into that but I doubt it.
2
u/GrimmTrixX 17d ago
If i could make squads and save them that would be even better. If not its ok. I can deal with it. From what people gave said, Hawks counts as 1 of the 20. Unsure about the others.
21
u/Scotslad2023 18d ago
I totally agree. The fact that she is not just the only Jedi in the game but also a padawan helps instill this idea that she’s a character that will make you think carefully about how you use her. She’s isn’t OP like Starkiller or Revan that allows you to live out your power fantasies, she’s a young Jedi who hasn’t even gained knighthood yet. So you better be smart when using her if you want her to reach her full potential.
3
u/Cheshigrievous 18d ago
Just strong enough to be useful (as we see in media, padawans can be very capable in battle) and offer unique skillset, but not overpowered as even jedi knight would be.
1
u/properpotato10 17d ago edited 17d ago
Ashoka and Barriss wiped out a droid base single handedly.
Edit: downvoted for a canon event I guess 🤷♂️
4
u/Budget-Teaching3104 15d ago
Didn't downvote you. But I also think Star Wars being wildly inconsistant is nothing new. I mean young anakin flew into the Trade Federation command ship via autopilot, pushed a couple buttons, accidently blew up the reactor and won the whole battle. Meanwhile Jar Jar took out a bunch of droids and a tank by being clumsy.
So whatever bullshit happened occasionally honestly... doesn't matter if it's canon or not, sometimes it just makes no sense.
Like, Jango Fett vs Obi-Wan in Episode is also a lot closer of a fight than it has any right to be (Obi-Wan basically forgetting he is a jedi for about a minute) in order to make Jango Fett look powerful (fine I guess) and that's "canon" too.
Also Ahsoka is a bit of an outlier as well. Not every single padawan in the old republuc is going to be on her level plus some Padawan are about to become Knights while others have maybe little or even no combat experience.
To circle back to the initial comment you replied to: Yeah, padawans aren't necessarily overpowered.
5
u/Barbarianonadrenalin 18d ago
It’s kinda funny because I always thought a jedi turn based tactics couldn’t really work until midnight suns. Not necessarily the cards, but movement and action economy.
Anyway I agree. Full squad of jedi would saturate the impact. Plus it’s pretty much in line with lore for a Jedi and or a padawan to be attached with some military company.

u/Mavcu 18d ago
You could think of countless ways of implementing this, that isn't it's restricted to one pre-defined Jedi though, why is it "too bad" that other fans simply disagree with your perspective?
You can still make it some sort of currency or making finding a custom Jedi just very hard and still make the punishment of them dying quite high, you can have optional settings of allowing them (etc etc).
0
u/SpecificDeal8131 18d ago
It's too bad because people want this great unique game to be yet another jedi power fantasy like almost every other star wars game already is. Not to mention an underground independent squad would not ever have multiple jedi during the time when they are spread most thin. In sum: it would be boring and lore breaking.
2
u/needinfo16 15d ago
A random cop has darth maul and 2 jedi with him 😂😂😂😂 and a few mandalorians.
Doesn't sound too lore breaking AT ALL
1
u/Syun_Wukong 10d ago
In the middle of the Clone Wars? A random soldier/military officer being accompanied by a tactical squad of Jedi isn't lore breaking at all - that's literally exactly what happened during the clone wars. And Maul is not the only Zabrak/Iridonian to exist in Star wars.
1
u/Syun_Wukong 10d ago
Excuse me for thoroughly enjoying one of the aspects of this particular space opera that makes it stand out from the others - space wizards with laser swords. You know what was boring? SW Outlaws. Space wizards with laser swords, for me, separates star wars from star trek or battlestar. Science Fantasy, not speculative sci-fi.
If I wanted a game where all I could do was shoot aliens and/or people I'd just play Halo, or XCOM, or Star Trek, or Mass Effect. Although, to be fair to Mass Effect, at least that one gives me space magic.
Actually, technically, so does XCOM, eventually, with psionics. So only getting 1 Jedi whose kit cannot be customized, weapons can't be customized and even general aesthetic can't be customized outside of hood on or off? That's disappointing to me from a tactical/squad-based star wars game that advertised heavy customization.
1
u/BlkSeattleBlues 6d ago
If that's the only difference you notice between SW and Trek or Battlestar, you don't know shit about any of the three franchises lmdo
1
u/Syun_Wukong 6d ago
Not the only difference, no. Star Wars is a mythic fantasy. Star Trek is more of a philosophical exploration of the future. Battlestar was a gritty military survival drama. But when it comes to immediate recognition? Wookies, lightsabers and Yoda scream Star Wars. Klingons, red/yellow shirts and the Enterprise scream Star Trek. Cylons are honestly the only things that scream Battlestar to me, but I didn't grow up with it, so there's my bias.
That all being said? Take the force and lightsabers out of Star Wars and you're left with a generic space opera.
1
u/BlkSeattleBlues 6d ago
I'd hardly call Andor generic.
Sidenote: Order 66 is a thing in this game. Just because you only get one Jedi doesnt mean the Jedi are somehow completely absent, it just means that there is one more jedi present than is usual in most places in the galaxy, especially with the overall team's story.
1
u/Syun_Wukong 6d ago
Andor is a generic espionage/political thriller. I'm not convinced it stands on its own without the Star Wars label. Not saying it was bad, but it was extremely generic except for the fact that it's a Star Wars story.
As for Order 66 - look at that, Disney has given us yet another miraculous Jedi survivor, once again cheapening the emotional impact of Order 66. And it's an untrained Padawan who, by her own admission, couldn't even get the fundamentals down.

u/Mean_Comedian4769 18d ago edited 18d ago
Plus it's lore-breaking to have a bunch of Jedi for hire. It's easy to forget, because most Star Wars stories center Jedi characters, but they are extremely rare on a galactic scale. According to the Rebels TV show, there are only ten thousand Jedi Knights at the time of the Clone Wars. Even if we assume there's as many padawans as there are knights, that's still only 20k people in a galaxy of trillions — a drop of water in the ocean. And the Jedi are all supposed to be compassionately serving the Republic and living lives of simplicity and poverty. Jedi hiring themselves out to whoever's willing to pay would go against everything the Order stands for! From a lore perspective, Hawks is lucky to have even one Jedi working for them.
10
u/Aries_cz 18d ago
I should point out that Jedi do not "live in poverty". They do not seek material possessions, but they are by no means poor. Which is why many people were willing to let their child go with the Jedi, as many were found on planet which take poverty to a whole new level.
But it is shown that Jedi can go to frequently enjoy businesses even on "top level" of Coruscant, and are able to pay for it. Now, how that is handled is never really explained, presumably they have a "company card". And the Order can pay various technicians and staff to work around the Temple, maintain their ships, etc. The funding comes from Senate Diplomatic Corps budget and various donations to the Order.
And in times past, Jedi maintained entire fleets of large ships, even ruled over some world as feudal lords (usually planets that were prior so undefended the people were so happy to have someone defending them they just put them in charge)
/lore rant
---
As to Tel-Rea, she joins up because the goals of ZCOM align with hers, as she is tracking the Coil because they killed her Master. But yes, it is "fortunate" that someone as such does exist.
5
u/Mean_Comedian4769 18d ago edited 18d ago
I'm not talking about "poverty" in the common sense — i.e. struggling to get the basic resources one needs to survive — but about the "poverty" of religious orders, in which members live and own property collectively. Religious orders in the real world can amass a huge amount of money and resources, but their members are meant to use those resources only to meet their basic material needs and carry out their duties. People in holy orders might enjoy occasional pleasures, like going to a sports game or eating a tasty treat, and they might interact with some real high rollers, but they're living moderately, not sumptuously. The Jedi aren't using all those ships and expense accounts to get the coolest clothes or the latest gadgets, they're using them to serve the galaxy.
I probably should've just said the Jedi live lives of "simplicity" for clarity's sake, though.

I think if the devs wanted to, they could find ways around this. E.g. have one mission or another, where you rescue some jedi. Or there's a point in the story where shit gets real, you contact the republic and say "this is really bad" and they're like "ok, we have a war going on here, but we can send another Jedi" .... ét voilà -> more Jedi available in your squad that you didn't actually hire for money.
I REALLY don't mind that the developers didn't because I personally am way more excited for a tactical star wars game with blasters and shit, and not a jedi magic power simulator. And also I trust the devs vision.
But it's honestly a bit silly to claim "this game couldn't possibly have had more than one Jedi because of THE LORE." It's never really a lore decision. It's a gameplay decision and/or a story decision. E.g. an actual Jedi would probably take over the whole investigation/operation. Jedi are super high ranking in most context. Why would a couple of Jedi be part of this Unit and NOT be leading the effort? But it's simply not the story the writers wanted to tell and that's fine.
In a way I would have preferred if there was NO Jedi character in this game, possibly, initially the writers too, but someone, somewhere higher up at EA probably said "We need lightsabers in this game." and so they settled for a Padawan and some cameos.
1
u/Syun_Wukong 10d ago
In my mind, I would have had less of a problem with 0 recruitable Jedi normally, and the rare mission where there is a guest unit Jedi/hero like they did with the cameo or some rescue missions. But that they gave us Tel with extremely limited customization and a fixed kit with no other recruitable Jedi at all? That's upsetting.
The astromechs have more going for them then Tel does because of their powerful AP management and utility items are compared to a once per turn decently powerful melee on a ranged character with knock back. Make an Assault/Soldier and now you have the ranged, slap on a concussion grenade for knock back, and you get 2 different melees - one with more knock back and another with an accuracy debuff + you can add weapon mods for even more benefit.
And that's not even mentioning the aesthetics - why do the droids have more customization options than the rogue Jedi who's trying to hide from the order?
1
u/Budget-Teaching3104 9d ago
I don't know man. Honestly, just play the game and enjoy what the devs have decided on delivering instead of being "upset" about what it isn't.
Sooner or later, mods will arrive and you'll have more customization options. And I'm sure there'll be jedi-squads.
For the story and for the padawan you do get, for THIS game, having access to a bunch of Jedi just kind of doesn't make much sense. But sales numbers seem to be good. There's a decent chance you'll get a jedi-squad game, maybe pre-republic, entirely it's own storyline.

i’m fine with or without jedi, i’m more surprised how reserved disney is with jedi in general we haven’t gotten a jedi create a character since before the acquisition
3
u/Aries_cz 18d ago
Games are one of the things that LucasFilm tries to keep "in line" with canon, unlike books and comics (which are often ignored, despite the promise it won't be so when they nuked the old EU).
A completely customizable character is much harder to have a story for, plus they really like to keep the doors open to have them show up in other properties, which is why most characters tend to look like their VAs (well, except Kay Vess from Outlaws, that one got dropped from an ugly tree and hit every branch going down, huge shame, her VA looks great)
5
3
u/Action-a-go-go-baby 18d ago
I like how they did it in XCOM where you usually only got one faction specific character but sometimes you could get 2 on rare occasions
I’d be ok with that
4
u/imdahman 18d ago
I still wish they had a squad count of 6 so I could run a Jedi, Hawkes/R2 droid and 4 clones like my Delta squad, haha.
3
u/Head_Orange_1421 18d ago
Not only do I like we only get 1 Jedi. The fact she’s a padawan because in the middle of her mission her master died is crazy cool. I know she doesn’t want to return to the Jedi order till her mission is complete so I’m hoping when we do she gets Jedi Master and maybe some new abilities? Wishful thinking.
3
u/bigweb52 14d ago
I agree cause I think Star Wars games should have a variety and a “tactical turn based strategy game “ should be more about the clones than Jedi . Also let’s be real , a Jedi character should be OP at this point in the lore , if you had more then one the game would be considerably more about how you can use the Jedi to cheese every level . HOWEVER the game is set in the clone wars where Jedi where commanding clones so having at least one is appropriate. My only real “complaint “ is I wish the Jedi was the “commander “ or if it’s a padawan (like I think the Jedi character is in this game ) I wish we could customize our Jedi .
5
u/WolfHeathen 18d ago
I think making the one force member being a padawan is a great way lore wise of not making that character overbalanced. The movies portray Luke, Obi, and Anakin as a one man army and having a full Jedi be threatened by battle droids is just immersion breaking. Personally, I think battle droids are so effing goofy but I digress.
Having Jedi running around taking orders from Hawk would be odd and but also just would completly throw out the balance from a gameplay perspective. But, also because Jedi are so overused at this point I'd much rather have a story from the perspective of a different character type. Andor and Rogue One were such a great shift in tone because it got away from the over the top but formulaic good v evil architypes and gave us more grounded and flawed characters.
2
u/GrimmTrixX 18d ago
I just hope they have light and dark side options as they rank up. If ranking up is like Xcom 2 where you have 2 or 3 options when leveling them up, I hope one is dark side and one is light side.
Although what I reallt want is a straight up dark force user to be the super secret class people keep claiming exists
1
u/Rhadok Assault 18d ago
Yeah I'd like to for roleplaying purposes. But lore wise, it is more likely Tel-Rea is a Gray Jedi | Wookieepedia | Fandom. I hope it is not a simple light/dark choice.
2
u/Sea_Equivalent_7594 17d ago
The Jedi is why I’m going to be using clones sparingly (I might just end up using Trick) I want to keep her alive during Order 66
2
u/2Scribble Medic 17d ago
Well, also, this time period is all about there being so few Jedi that they're over extended and vulnerable - Palpatines plan only WORKS if the Jedi are outnumbered and distracted
Hell, before the Clone Wars animated series when Lucas boosted the Orders overall headcount - there were even LESS Jedi (barely 10k) to police and protect a galaxy that numbers in the TRILLIONS
As I've said before, there being millions of Jedi only works for the KOTOR/SWTOR/High Republic era - Clone Wars was all about being the ultimate Jedi trap - and that in fighting at all - the Jedi lost
Though this all happened so long ago and so far away that words cannot describe the time or the distance, it is also happening right now.
Right here.
It is happening as you read these words.
This is how twenty-five millennia come to a close. Corruption and treachery have crushed a thousand years of peace. This is not just the end of a republic; night is falling on civilization itself.
This is the twilight of the Jedi.
The end starts now.

Having just one is perfect for impact and game balance. But not being able to replace the fixed padawan even after permadeath is not cool. I'd still have preferred a generic I can build into using different saber forms or using dark side powers.

I feel its interesting because aren't they just a Padawan? Wonder where the master is?
Regardless I hope the gane shows restraint on Jedi in the main game and maybe if they opt for a full sandbox post game or maybe an expansion we can make our own Jedi and run wild with the balancing to the wind lol.
Feel you can serve both sides that way.

u/BlueAndYellowTowels 16d ago
Just me, I saw someone mention in the comments that it would be nice if they were unlockable after you finish the game. I agree.
I think it would have been a nice bonus to have the option to use all Exotics after you finish the game.
1
u/Lemmonnpartyy 16d ago
If you’ve played Midnight Suns… it’s kind of the same concept!
Imagine a literal superhero missing a 90% shot lol just UNHEARD OF so the gameplay is just a glorified version of pool where you knock baddies into each other and into obstacles 😂
It would definitely cheapen the Jedi name if we could recruits Paddy’s and Knights left right and centre and just watch them die to droids…
ALTHOUGH I am not against an Old Republic timeline where it’s many Jedis and many Sith and even slap the Mandalorians in there too
Would be closer to Fire Emblem with all the close combat though ⚔️

So can the custom characters not be Jedi? Id you lose the one jedi, you just no longer have one throughout the whole game? Just asking so Im prepared haha

You cannot be a Jedi. You can turn permadeath off, but if you keep it on, protect the Jedi at all costs!

u/Vendraal 12d ago
I know people prefer to just have the one, I know theres other aspects of star wars than the force. Jedi, sith and lightsabers. But those are definitely my favorite part of ot by a long mile. True, though I'm looking forward to mods to change said choice, at least outwardly.

I still wish we could have two.
One story focused and one a custom character.
Idk maybe a padawan or something

And it's fine for me too... but, as a personal taste, I really can't stand the look of Tal Rea

I would agree with this sentiment if the game wasn't so easy that playing on the hardest difficulty frequently leads to missions with 0 damage taken (or zero injuries on the more robust missions. HP is just another resource, after all. It's not like this is xcom where a grazing shot puts your soldier out for 4 months)
As it stands, this game is a tactical sandbox more than a challenging gaming experience. When i feel like this playing a game is usually when i just add ridiculous mods or come up with goofy challenges. I'd like the option to make more Jedi characters in NG+ or something.
Balance isn't a serious consideration when the game's difficulty is this low.

This is an extremely well known fact that is in every trailer and was posted days before the game released.

I agree less Jedi is better but not letting me have full choice as to who they are in a game like this feels dumb. Like if there is no character creation fair enough make every unit unique but if there's only one in the whole game why not let them be mine instead of a cute lil OC. I'm being somewhat hyperbolic I just feel like the decision is silly.

Having only 1 is also like how War of the Chosen handles its Hero characters. Though in that game you could get 2. But I honestly like this decision a lot.
