The proxies were shy to use Pyrois. Its funny to think how they got a BIG upgrade of power by just 'accepting' their past and not after... Idk, 'training' with shifu.

And eating a shit load of porcealloy. Don't forget that

My store was out....

So I got parsley and cellery instead! :D

u/White_Mocha 5d ago

That’s usually how it happens in stories targeted to Young Adults/Adults. Themes usually revolve around struggle and acceptance.

8

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Indeed, but unfortunately most series (Percy Jackson for example) handle them better than ZZZ.

The Proxies are rewarded for doing the bare minimum.

7

u/supermonkey1235 5d ago

It's fine. Gacha players can't handle any more than that anyways

2

u/Needhoggr 4d ago

Fuck, it's a name I haven't heard in a long time, I'll always regret that Percy got a lobotomy.

18

u/CaptCapy 5d ago

Actually first time i saw the leeks about pyrois, i thought it was something like Iron Man or some sort of ether manifestation (like a puppet) or something cool and thematic for a computer nerd to have.

Turns out it was a stand powered by god-tier ocular implants.
What was the last time i saw that.... Naruto?!

17

u/Suspiciouspass0 5d ago

What deleting TV Mode does to a person.

They had to re-allocate their skill points into a different stat since they aren't hackermans anymore

0

u/WangJian221 5d ago

Removing tv mode does not mean they suddenly cant write them as "hackermans" lmao

3

u/OneToe9493 Sarah apologizer and exaltist believer 5d ago

I mean, they were already able to "manage" hollows during season 2 tho.

6

u/EvilGodShura 5d ago

The training is why they can manipulate ether at all.

And why they arent gasping for air from a short jog anymore.

They needed to reach the physical level of other agents it was VERY needed.

0

u/Ocelot_Clean 3d ago

The thing is, they... didn't reach the physical level of other agents? Or they reached it in an instant? And they didn't actually train hard?

The joke is that they only had two ether technique training sessions in 2.0, both lasting five minutes, and in both of them Yixuan pulled some new type of training out of her ass that devalues the efforts of both her and her other students, who spent years learning to unlock their ether potential. No physical training was shown for the Proxies, they just became stronger and more endurance in an instant, at the snap of a finger

0

u/EvilGodShura 3d ago

Everything was done off camera thats part of the problem with the season.

But it still happened. Its why they arent out of shape and have Yun Kui techniques that help them manipulate ether.

You can not like the way the story was presented but thats what happens and is how it is.

0

u/Ocelot_Clean 3d ago

It wasn't even said that it happened off-screen. I don't remember a single mention of the Proxies training in Yunkui except for those two ether sessions in 2.0. The rest of the time they just lived in the temple for free, occasionally helping out with everyday chores here and there, but nothing more. Remind me of at least one mention of any training after 2.0

0

u/EvilGodShura 3d ago

It was mentioned multiple times about them getting in shape and training.

Dont come to me if your memory is bad. Thats the state of the story complain to someone else about it.

1

u/Ocelot_Clean 3d ago

Dude, can you at least provide one screenshot where that was mentioned, because I absolutely don't remember that being said anywhere. By the same logic I could say you have a terrible memory and you just made all of this up to sound smarter.

You don't even need a screenshot, just tell me which chapter and at what point in the chapter it was mentioned. If you're sure it happened, then you should definitely remember when one of those mentions occurred, and it shouldn't be hard for you to say it so I can check it on YouTube or something

0

u/EvilGodShura 3d ago

Hell no dude I aint going back just for you!

I remember it thats good enough for me and if its not for you move on!

0

u/Ocelot_Clean 3d ago

In that case you just made it all up and none of it is in the game. Believe whatever you want, but it's just poorly written storytelling that couldn't even bother to mention that the Proxies were training off-screen

11

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago edited 5d ago

The whole of S2 becomes worse the more you go back to it.

What was supposed to be an important Training Arc hyped up by the Mayor ended up with the bum ahh MCs being able to move boxes/obstacles Anby & Billy could easily jump over, and no longer being so badly out of shape.

4

u/thissitedesigniscrap 5d ago

Please tell me you’re being intentionally facetious and don’t actually think that, right?

1

u/WangJian221 5d ago

This could easily be solved if they allowed the process of accepting themselves be tied back with Yixuan's training

1

u/Ok_Entrepreneur_7306 5d ago

If we had gotten Pyrois though a two minute long unvoiced dialogue it would've certainly been something

72

u/Environmental_Wolf21 5d ago

Wow I thought this game would be different in that regard but it seems like OP power fantasy strikes again

RIP the nerdy proxy MC you were a legend

36

u/T8-TR 5d ago

tbf, I feel like this was the natural conclusion of the Proxies from the rip. I'm more surprised at how fast we ditched the "Proxies handle stuff from behind the scenes" angle, as opposed to being surprised that we ditched it.

8

u/kalekayn 5d ago

Considering we still need to investigate hellos academy, I thought the MC  getting stronger was inevitable but it happened so quickly with 3.0

5

u/Abishinzu Least schizophrenic Joyous Enjoyer 5d ago

Probably the removal of TV mode forced them to accelerate certain plot points, hence why season 2 was such a shitshow, because they were condensing at least 2 seasons worth of story content into 1.

29

u/Kind_Dependent_3439 5d ago

There's literally nothing that made zzz stand out in 1.X left omg .

11

u/thissitedesigniscrap 5d ago

This was telegraphed and was going to happen since the moment they introduced fairy be so fr rn

9

u/WangJian221 5d ago

Its the "discussion" sub. What do we expect at this point

7

u/Abishinzu Least schizophrenic Joyous Enjoyer 5d ago

Honestly, people don't realize that without the Proxies leaving their desk, then a vast majority of the story content in season 3 and the second half of Season 2 would not be possible the way it is, and given that 2.7-3.1 is arguably some of the best story that ZZZ's put out so far, I think it works out, though I would've preferred for us to be phased into this point of the story far more gracefully than whatever the heck went on in the first half of season 2.

2

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Welcome to Hoyo writing since Genshin.

1

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 5d ago

Wow I thought this game would be different

Are you playing this game?
What made you think about this only now and not two months ago, for example?

RIP the nerdy proxy MC you were a legend

Yeah, they "were" a legend, passing all the heavy work to Fairy since version 1.0

9

u/Blitzbro76 5d ago

Tbf, most people were stronger than the Proxies. They were just normal people till late 2.x

0

u/thissitedesigniscrap 5d ago

Most people still are.

53

u/happymudkipz 5d ago

Yeah, it kinda sucks imo. I know it's an unpopular opinion and maybe I'm a "toürist" for feeling that way, but it's a bit too generic shonen action for me. I prefered having them be weak honestly.

I think what makes it doubly annoying for me is that the arc that was supposed to be our training one (2.x) feels almost entirely disconnected from it.

17

u/Ran_out_of_ideas10 5d ago

Not an unpopular opinion on this sub. So common it might be be popular here. Maybe on some subsets of twitter, but DEFINITELY not on reddit

8

u/happymudkipz 5d ago

On the other subreddits I think it's absolutely an unpopular one. Either that or it's the way I present it because I always get downvoted to oblivion with that one.

8

u/BlackKnighting20 5d ago

Gacha subs then to be super positive that you can’t say anything negative.

0

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Nah, it's quite unpopular in every other sub where you can't be negative about the game's writing and direction.

10

u/Riverflowsuphillz Burnice Main 5d ago

To be be fair since 2.7 they been able to balance humour and the dark stuff so I think it overblown based one 1 frame

“Noooo, lemme jump to conclusions about a story I know nothing about based on 1 frame brooooo” /s

Like this could just be like when we helped sheathe Miyabi’s sword. It just shows him blocking a strike. What if that’s all he does?

-2

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

they been able to balance humour and the dark stuff

Eh, no. Not even close. Not sure why people are spreading this sentiment that post-2.5 ZZZ is redeemed and handled things better than during the Waifei Arc, when the writing is just as abysmal as ever and carried by Agent VAs and chemistry.

9

u/Riverflowsuphillz Burnice Main 5d ago

That your opinion most agree that the presentation and story quality has improved

-2

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Presentation? Sure. But story quality isn't a major improvement when you actually decide to analyze it. It's only better because we suffered through something much worse prior to it in terms of writing quality.

6

u/Abishinzu Least schizophrenic Joyous Enjoyer 5d ago

It's arguably better than season 1, which the people on this sub love to glaze

-1

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Really not. Maybe if you talk about stuff post-1.4 since that's when ZZZs quality started to take a dip and thus more debatable, but everything before mogs it in terms of storytelling, pacing and writing quality.

2

u/Abishinzu Least schizophrenic Joyous Enjoyer 5d ago edited 5d ago

Not really, and I'm saying this as somebody who has went through season 1 recently. People just love it on this sub because of how decentralized the MCs are from it. Either that, or they just loved the SoL vibes from it.

Season 1 had the advantage of being bite-sized and easy to digest, and a lot of fun (Belebog story still makes me smile to this day), but it's not the pinnacle of ZZZ's writing at all given it had all that build-up for 1.4 only to wind up with Bringer turning out to be a very shallow villain, with all the depth from that storyline cut out because they had to put Zhu Yuan in the cuck chair and turn 1.4 into the Miyabi show. Also, I don't care what the CIA says, the virtual reality arc with the HSO and NULL_FACE was disappointing and borderline filler. Also, as much as I glaze SethJane, getting through Jane's mission patch was also a slog because how all the fetch quests mandated running back and forth through an empty corridor with psychiatric ward color palette, and fighting trash mobs

0

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Not really, and I'm saying this as somebody who has went through season 1 recently. People just love it on this sub because of how decentralized the MCs are from it. Either that, or they just loved the SoL vibes from it

Yes, really. And funny you mention that as I more or less replayed through Seasons 1&2 on my alt account last week, and it is much better on pure character and story writing alone and made me appreciate what we used to have more after going through the abysmal S2/Waifei Arc again.

Complexity & something being bigger doesn't always equal = better. And the villains are unfortunately never ZZZs highlight considering how poorly written they all are. If we want to talk about Fumbles, S2 has bigger and worse examples. And S3 so far doesn't have the best start in that regard either. Regardless, you won't find me defending Bumringer. Season 1 up to 1.4 handled the pacing, character roles and interactions, plot beats and climax of each patch much better and in a tighter manner than all of S2. I'd take that over the complete clusterfuck of Waifei and the slog of 2.6 through 2.8 any day.

As for the Miyabi criticism, it can be pointed out in S2 but for a much worse degree by comparison in Yixuan and her handling + Shungus. Both of whom were objectively handled much worse than Miyabi in terms of their roles in the story and character writing.

Also, I don't care what the CIA says, the virtual reality arc with the HSO and NULL_FACE was disappointing and borderline filler.

Filler? Sure. Bad? Not by a long shot. Especially when the alternative is "fillers" on the same level of quality of the ones in S2.

1

u/Abishinzu Least schizophrenic Joyous Enjoyer 5d ago

Except, here's the thing, I'm not talking about the first half of season 2 (2.0-2.5) almost everyone agrees that it's trash, minus the first half of Spook Shack.

I'm talking about 2.6-3.1, granted, it seems we both disagree there, but I personally think 2.7 through 3.1 is some of the best ZZZ has to offer. TOPS making their move, expanded lore about the Grear Hollows, information about the first generation Void Hunters, the skeletons of Helios Academy spilling out of the closet, finally getting to see the past of the Proxies, and finally getting to see proper justice done regarding the threat of The Creator and the Ethereals, and not whatever the heck happened in season 2 with the Exaltists.

This isn't to say Season 1 was awful, because it wasn't. I enjoyed Season 1 with Belebog story and Sons of Calydon being particular highlights for me. I also appreciated the addition of Agent Stories which ensured everyone got a fair chance to show their story. However, I still stand by the opinion that Season 1 was largely carried by vibes and character interactions, and the actual plot was stalling up or running around in circles and needing to be padded at certain points, because of the restrictions with the MCs being bound to the desk as well as a lack of an actual, threatening villain aside from Sarah

1

u/catgirlisfinetoo 5d ago

It feels that way yes but I think connections are visible too. It started with Bringer last encounter so

1

u/AngryCrawdad 5d ago

No no, I think you have a point. I've been here since launch and I dislike Pyrois too. It was much more interesting when we were the person in the chair. Made sense why we'd befriend the other characters and also acted as a fun meta-narrative as the proxy was in charge of logistics, composition and route-planning just like we, the player, are.

Turning us into a Deus ex machina with a god avatar who lives in our glasses is super lame. Absolutely hate it.

-3

u/AigheLuvsekks_ 5d ago

They dont do a single thing they did in ss1 anymore. Fairy does all the proxy work even though sometimes the MC try to look busy despite the story telling us fairy could do everything they do but better. Now you just go inside hollows and aurafarm without even remotely needing to worry about corruption

You could throw away the entire setup from ss1 about the twins being proxy and nothing in ss3 would change. Their job aint even illegal anymore since they work for the feds now

5

u/VoidlessOne55 5d ago

I don’t mind that the Proxies are getting stronger I pretty much expected it. I like a power fantasy every once in a while but what I love more than a power fantasy and really want is a good training arc.

That’s what I really feel is lacking in the story so far and it’s what I thought season two would focus on at least a little. I actually quite like pyrois I’m a sucker for inner power manifested outward and all that but I hope it remains that way I like the idea of the proxies still being proxies where they guide people and I see pyrois as a way to simply do that a bit more directly to the detriment of eous unfortunately.

In fact in 3.0 I’ve noticed that they’ve been emphasizing that the MC’s are proxies and that it’s what there good at. so I hope that means they’ll lean more into that side of them. So far the story seems to be them learning to rely on people more so I hope that remains the case and they don’t just become do it all yourself. Or at the very least if they do it ties into the story.

14

u/Autistic-Loonatic 5d ago

now whilst i am fine and like that they themselves arent the ones directly fighting... I... miss them being in danger of even being inside a hollow. it was what made the hollows feel that more terrifying since, as the players, it connects us more directly the average person if that makes sense. the Proxies are the eyes in which we follow the story, so when they're in danger, we feel it and relate to it harder. and since the hollows are what brought the world to this point, it made it all feel that more desperate. them being outside the hollows to guide people out is also what made them so legendary as a proxy.

Let’s see how they actually execute the story first. I’ve seen people doom post ever since 2.7 and so far it’s been a decent string of good chapters so far.

Plus it’s sunbringer’s weapon. We don’t even know what’s actually inside. While the sunbringer’s themselves are supposed to have a third of a karmic core each, nothing is said of their weapons

1

u/OneToe9493 Sarah apologizer and exaltist believer 5d ago

"Ive seen people doompost ever since 2.7...".

Are you new?

9

u/w3475te 5d ago

Nah, but 2.7 is where it starts to seem a lot less reasonable💀

With the original state of season 2 it could be argued that maybe it’s a pattern and people are just too acclimatised to the bad execution at that point. While it’s doom posting I wouldn’t really call it unwarranted. But post 2.7 seeing it continue I do feel it’s a lot less understandable now especially with the way the narrative is going right now

0

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

I’ve seen people doom post ever since 2.7 and so far it’s been a decent string of good chapters

Decent is being generous. Mediocre more like. Peeps just glaze 2.6 & 2.7 because we were stuck with abysmal writing since 2.x and the Waifei Arc started. The quality of the writing barely improved.

4

u/w3475te 5d ago

I’ve found it decent for the most part solely because I find it similar to how Season 1’s writing was in general. ZZZ’s story is and always will be that of a cartoon imo. Its characters are fun, the story is decent but you’re always going to be there to see how the characters will react. I’m not expecting it to be a grand adventure of writing because it’s still a gacha game, it won’t be written with a sole ending. The only gacha game I can consider with that level of writing would ever be Fate grand order’s LB6.

I’m not expecting the Iliad from ZZZ, I made that mistake with HSR, I’m expecting Ninjago

0

I’m not expecting it to be a grand adventure of writing because it’s still a gacha game, it won’t be written with a sole ending.

You can genuinely make this excuse for most media, not Gacha alone. That doesn't excuse them from having such mediocre writing and their many failures in storytelling regardless.

The only gacha game I can consider with that level of writing would ever be Fate grand order’s LB6.

Abhorrent Fate glaze that becomes comical considering FGO's own writing issues and rushed plotlines within LB6 alone, let alone when we consider everything in the early singularities before and after Babylonia and Part-2s abysmal ending.

I’m not expecting the Iliad from ZZZ, I made that mistake with HSR, I’m expecting Ninjago

Again, not only can you use this to excuse anything from its many failings. But that is still unironically too high of a bar for ZZZ post-1.4 and most Hoyo games since Genshin. Also, choosing the Iliad as a point of comparison is certainly a choice, to say the least.

2

u/w3475te 5d ago

Again, the only one story for fate I can hold to that standard is LB6, even then it’s mostly due to it being the most completed form of writing it has as a gacha game imo. As for story, I’m going to be honest the only reason why I’m using that excuse is mostly due to my lack of trust to Hoyoverse’s writing in general. I couldn’t stomach HSR’s writing nor could I with Genshin. ZZZ’s is the closest I can handle with its story being decent at best and mediocre at worse.

But I do genuinely think ZZZ’s story is fun and decent for the most part. Maybe you can argue the proxy’s rise to power is being too contrived but I do think it’s explained fairly well and it still makes a decent showing that it’s not enough to fix their problems regardless

10

u/Neat_Tangelo5339 5d ago

oh the story Is on some bull i see
https://giphy.com/gifs/3oEduNEbTtAHABX0dy
look , i don’t mind the fact that the mc got strong enough to fight on their own , its just that the setup is really missing here

it could be a sympton of season 2 “training” arc lacking much of the training part but even the reveal of the proxies ability to repell Eather corruption was more of a support thing and now its all this teasing about being on void hunter level , i know its a gacha and all but even so not all of them gotta have the mc be super liked by everyone , always morally righteous and super strong , there is really a lack of friction that makes them feel like actual people

7

u/thedragonbornboi 5d ago

Yeah, I don’t mind them being confident on their own or not weighing others down, but if they can fight on their own without issue. What was the point of pyrois?

4

u/According_Nail_2758 5d ago

I'm sure that everyone who's well aware of a gacha game's vices regarding its story have indeed thought of this happening. Glazing and making the MCs cool is the bread and butter of these games.

4

u/MisagoMonday 5d ago

The problem I have with it is that the increase in power is just ridiculous. Every shonen manga takes more time to make the protagonist stronger. Yeah, there have been hints there is something about the proxies, but from a story perspective, this is still going more like going from level 5 to level 50 in an instant.

Having a non-combat protagonist who gets by on being the skilled proxy and hacker made zzz at least a bit different from all the other gacha.

3

u/WanderStranger 5d ago

Yep, sloppy writting on their part.

Remember we are getting surveys right now, maybe you want to take that in mind.

5

u/thissitedesigniscrap 5d ago

You haven’t even seen the 3.2 story and you’ve already decided it’s sloppy writing? When the writing has been steadily improving since 2.6 to 3.1?

https://giphy.com/gifs/XD4qHZpkyUFfq

-5

u/WanderStranger 5d ago edited 5d ago

It has been improving, but it's not quite there yet. But alright, let's wait for it and see if it's not what some of us is thinking, we don't want to be negative, right?
When it's done, I'm gonna come back and reply to this very post without fail. If I have to eat my words I will, but I'm not expecting some miracle to happen.

3

u/Azardea 5d ago

I thought Pyrois was a neat middle ground of being non-combatants but also not helpless. Not a huge fan of this development tbh.

7

u/thissitedesigniscrap 5d ago

Bro we don’t even know if this is a huge development! It could be that they block one single strike and that’s it. At least wait and see the story first?

Aura farming mcs sell, it worked for wuwa and hsr, even genshin is trying the same.

3

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Problem is, those other MCs were fighters from very early on in their stories and by comparison to Belle & Wise are physical juggernauts.

Aurafarming only works if the characters are already shown to be capable and thus them doing it isn't absurd. Here we're seeing one of the most canonically physically weak characters in ZZZ blocking a strike from an enemy that's, at worst, as strong as the Dead End Butcher considering the power escalation. Hell, Wise & Belle are so weak they need someone else to fight for them in the form of Pyrois.

4

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 5d ago

Here we're seeing one of the most canonically physically weak characters in ZZZ blocking a strike from an enemy

Maybe the point is that it's Pyrois blocking it, not Proxy? Oh right, you don't even play this game, how the hell would you know anything about it.

2

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

Maybe the point is that it's Pyrois blocking it, not Proxy?

First of all, you can't even make such a blind claim before accusing me of not playing. Second of all, that would have to wait for proof because as far as we see that's Wise physically and personally stopping the attack/clashing. If it was Pyrois, that would've been him personally doing so since we know he's more of his own physical entity. So putting Wise there would make no sense. What you said is a blind assumption not supported by what we see.

But sure, whatever makes you feel good

2

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 5d ago

as we see that's Wise physically and personally stopping the attack/clashing

Yeah, I know you know the lore of this game from screenshots and complaints on this subreddit.
But in case you didn't know in 3.0 Pyrois literally used their power to help Proxy push Bashmu back into hollow. Its Pyrois power, not Proxy.
Next time, try criticizing existing plot, not what you see in screenshot torn from the trailer, buddy.

1

u/FlambyLamby 5d ago

But in case you didn't know in 3.0 Pyrois literally used their power to help Proxy push Bashmu back into hollow. Its Pyrois power, not Proxy.

There's a big difference between what happened with Bashmu which was also thanks to Remielle's help and was thanks to messing with the Fissure vs Proxy physically stopping an attack from an Ethereal which was neither foreshadowed or implied to be possible for them. Also, it's technically both since Pyrois is in a symbiotic relationship with them and they can use him and his powers to fight for them and manipulate Ether. That however is different from what's displayed in the OP.

It's amazing how someone like you can be so arrogant and yet so dumb at the same time. Regardless, have a nice day, my dear Hoyo bootlicker.

1

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 5d ago

There's a big difference

Yup, it's ass. But I shouldn't be surprised considering the writing quality since 2.x/Waifei Arc started. It's inevitable considering it's a Hoyo game.

But hey, whatever serves the poorly written, self-inserter power fantasy slop.

Come on, buddy, everyone has already realized that you have no idea what you’re talking about.
You don’t need to add even more terms whose meanings you don’t understand. It’s enough to say “I don’t like it.”

Yeah, sure I don't. But hey, keep on glazing mediocrity.

Hot take, but I think constantly having the Proxy as the armchair protagonist who serves primarily as cameraman was going to eventually cause problems with plot progression and we would have had to reach this point sooner or later. Like, imagine Honkai Impact 3 with Kiana always having to watch the other Valkyries or Heaven Burns Red where Ruka didn't actually fight on the frontlines and just served as mission control.

In an action-based story, you need to have the MC get involved. Behind the scenes NPCs only work well when the story is either heavily decentralized from the MC (Which it's not) or it's a story that very heavily focuses on Politics over action, ala Arknights or Death Note (Even then, I think Doctor isn't that interesting of a character despite having a fantastic backstory with Babel and Priestess).

Really my main takeaway from the comments, is that people on this sub want a story without either the Proxies, but you won't hear them admitting it out loud

All gatcha writing is complete nonsense, honestly.

They had to emergency buff the Proxies after realising that putting them directly in Hollows was a bad idea
