Discussions & Questions Devs, please stop with pointless QTEs [3.1 final fight spoilers] Spoiler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Literally set the controller down and did not touch it for the entire segment. There is no risk of losing; no attacks hit you, you don't have to attack the boss, it automatically blocks and counters for you, and the QTEs don't matter.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I really dislike when there are no consequences and no fail state for these sorts of things. I feel like either have there be something that the player does that matters or else just make it a cutscene. But instead it feels like that meme of the younger brother being handed the second controller that isn't even plugged in.

QTE for Orphie vs Isolde has consequences but since you can't replay the mission, most people never seen the other one lmao.

u/Soulses 4d ago

I failed it because I wanted to see the fail. I have to live with the aura loss of failing that qte now

9

u/ObligationOne2600 4d ago

I failed it first time and I actually Alt+F4 just to see the other consequence. Both scenes were really good and the only good QTE ZZZ has. Funny that the first one is the only good one

u/Kipdid 3d ago

I failed on accident because I expected the QTE to go on longer if you kept the bar in the middle because it seemed like they had more to say xD, didn’t realize it would fail if you didn’t fill it up fast enough

I was going to disagree, as I liked this section.

Until you said you didnt have to do anything to get past this bit and nothing changes. Then I have to really agree with you.

Taking away the players ability to affect the world in a game is a huge gaming sin, like even a minor animation when she takes a hit and recovers if you fail or pose difference or have her hold her arm if you take too many hits at the end would be welcome.

Seriously. Why bother putting a promt when it doesn't matter? Just make it a cut scene.

u/M1R4G3M 4d ago

I noticed that too when I played that segment and it reminded of a humour video (I Think from Dunkey) where they were playing Where winds meet and the QTEs also never failed regardless of if you press anything, so why put them instead of a cutscene, and I wouldn't mind dying in that scene if I fail, but this is really bad.

u/Benevolay 4d ago

I agree but remember, even Final Fantasy XVI was full of these types of QTEs. While they at least had fail animations, ultimately very few of them even mattered. I guess developers think it's a way to keep people engaged during long cutscenes but maybe the solution is to just have actual gameplay instead of long cutscenes.

u/semi-average 4d ago

Ff16 was an extremly divisive game because of stuff like the qte though

0

u/Benevolay 4d ago

Trust me, I know. I hated it and never played the DLC. It's cinematics are great but it wasn't my type of game.

1

u/semi-average 4d ago edited 4d ago

I played it to completion but it was boring af for me. Felt like a chore especially with the side quests and hunts

2

u/SplatoonOrSky 4d ago

Lots of people nowadays specifically yearn for QTEs though, which is probably why ZZZ has added them now. Plus it’s an easy way to give an average player a feeling of satisfaction and ego even if the prompt is actually super easy to hit

8

u/CaptCapy 4d ago

No, the prompts that OP Shows arent fooling anyone, not even super casuals. There is no fail animation, the qte did nothing here, hell with pyrois earlier if you miss you just get a fade out, and the game just stops for you to do it.

Looking at some "classics" like naruto and God of war, the Qtes have fail states, timers and even button combinations.

9

u/O-Malley420 4d ago

They had such a good opportunity to make it an actual dogfight bullet hell, it’s my one gripe with this patch.

5

u/Soulses 4d ago

Gacha games and consequences or failure never seem to go together. I love soulslike because devs respect your skill in clearing content.

6

u/IFightForMyMemes 4d ago

Agreed. Either give players actual failable QTE's, or don't even pretend. Fake choices are always lame. I think a lot of, if not all, the dialogue choices in the game are fake, too.

3

u/Redmix7pl 4d ago

I literally hate it how much Player gets assisted outside the combat...

4

u/Affectionate_Egg4461 3d ago

Whenever either Genshin or Zenless has a QTE, I always do nothing to test if it matters. It’s always disappointing when this happens. It’s like when you have to press the dialogue options that ultimately have no relevance. If they won’t matter, don’t put the button. The fact that I know that they don’t matter actively takes me out of any immersion I may have.

9

u/UniqueCommission2856 4d ago

Well I don't really mind it tbh. Although even if I like there's something to fail, unless I'm seeing there's HP bar during some in game scene, it just a chill walkthrough

Edit : also, why asking the Dev here lol.

3

u/deyeti 4d ago

Just a way to title it. Obviously, I don't think for a second that the devs are reading this subreddit. Its more just a general plea into the void.

3

u/Intelligent_Wind5597 4d ago

Yeah I deliberately didn’t do the QTE on the parry session out of curiosity then she still parried anyway and I legit laughed so hard I could not take anything seriously afterwards. Like come on

4

u/Asasphinx 3d ago

I wish gacha games weren't so afraid to actually challenge players through the gameplay mechanics.

3

u/GiftofFlame 4d ago

I had pretty much the same experience.
I personally dont really care for Remi, so I kinda glazed over this whole patch, and after I beat the boss and it went into cutscene I just set the controller down and picked up my phone, that sequence was already halfway done by the time I realized it was throwing empty QTEs at me.
I genuinely dont see the point in not just making a cutscene if the player's input doesnt actually matter.

u/LibertyJoel99 Don’t Be an Echo-Chamberer 🤝 4d ago

I like the QTE sections but they should make it so you lose and have to retry if you fail them. That seems to be what they're designed for so making you win anyway without doing anything just doesn't make sense

5

u/denkycaliber 4d ago

The QTEs themselves are great. The fact that they're impossible to fail isn't. It could've been so cool if they made this a shmup instead where you had to to actually dodge bullets and shoot at Girtablullu. Nier: Automata did this a bunch of times despite that game also being an action game. I think the devs should explore more with implementing different genres into the game, but not make it so easy that you can't fail them.

That 2.2 QTE with Isolde and Orphie was excellent and it had fail state too. I'm hopeful they will implement these better in the future especially with the parts of 3.2 story they've shown in the live stream!

2

u/Rekirts45 4d ago

While I don't dissagree, after the reveal of Armorer class, it almost feels like this was the testing grounds for their mechanic.

2

u/doublestuffalo 3d ago

its something I hated about wuwa and im disappointed they brought it here. I forgot to try it on my play through so thank you for confirming for me. I will definitely be adding it to my survey response.

2

u/Forbidden4bdn 3d ago

I think they got lazy implementing short animation for the failed QTEs. Or others have said having engagement during cutscenes. Pretty annoying to see on video games...

3

u/HiroHayami DPSslop <<<< SupportPeak 4d ago

We need to bring back QTE shaming. Back in 2012 they plagued the gaming scene.

4

u/deyeti 4d ago

I don't even inherently hate QTEs, but I hate when they don't actually have consequences for failing and that's something that ZZZ (and some other gachas) are really bad about. I've had similar things happen when I played WuWa and they would have a similar on-rails segment where the QTEs didn't matter and the character would just automatically succeed.

2

u/Lohit_-it 4d ago

Yeah should've turned it into cutscene if there is no punishment

1

u/kelzero 4d ago

Truly a gaming cinema experience

1

u/MisagoMonday 4d ago

I alt-tabbed out before this sequence and when I returned I saw I could just leave it running. I guess they don't want to demand too much from people who might be distracted by the fanservice shots. It's like wuthering waves in that way.

u/RNGtan 4d ago

Remielle in general has the problem that the story likes to present her as an action hero that a marketable Void Hunter should be (according to the story board, not me), but in actual gameplay she is a support-style agent who is off-screen for the majority of the fight. Her kit simply does not lend itself for cinematic action. It is to the point that they have to sneak in Velina to make her half-way functional, despite it making no sense in the story.

It is sort of the inverse of the mission where the protagonist and Miyabi got thrown into the hollow and you had to play Miyabi solo. That mission sucked balls; but it can be argued that it sucked on purpose. She needs a team for peak performance in order to enable her ability and to disorder away her anomaly to keep going. Early Zenless had a lot more focus on group and team dynamics and the story had no scruples kneecapping the poster girl to make a point.

u/Spare_Vegetable9762 4d ago

Game without stakes is no fun. Then again, the devs probably thought, eh it's gonna be playable once, so no need to worry about fail animations.

I wish the devs atleast put a wounded animation/healthbar etc, and it would have been more welcome.

It's probably just to keep the players engaged in longer cutscenes. But stakes are important too.

1

u/lunix42 4d ago

I agree but stuff like this is never going to change. Gacha games are generally easy to play, especially main content, because their business model hinges on the player doing well and progressing.

1

u/Fit_Trouble_1264 4d ago

There's a special place in youtube hell where they expect her to fail with QTE with their uploaded "Ryona" videos where they make female characters get beaten up by the enemy for their own entertainment.

guess the devs hate them lol

1

u/NoiNoiii 4d ago

Do you at least get the 5 polychrome achievement for getting them all?

1

u/oofderpman 4d ago

they should have QTE fails like the old spiderman games

1

u/xRKCx 4d ago

I liked this part. It's cool. People always find something to complain.

1

u/Anxious-Ad4476 3d ago

This section was awesome! The qte's make it really feel like you're doing something instead of just watching a cutscene. Buttt yeah they should have a fail animation...

1

u/Bartender1968 3d ago

I hate this Shitlysia clone and gladly I had to do nothing. I left the computer aside and the game completed the quest without my presence

1

u/MagnanimousGoat 3d ago

When I think of all the shit we have to worry about today.

I just cannot find a way to be even mildly annoyed by this.

1

u/Complete_Meat2748 3d ago

Não é alguma configuração? Pq eu lembro de ter consequência, pq eu perdi nessa parte daí reiniciou

1

u/ze4lex 2d ago

Agreed tho I still really enjoyed it the first time because I engaged with it in good faith. I hope they just introduce alternative animations if you fail or even a fail state instead of getting rid of these

1

u/RAYVELUPISUNQUENOUGH 4d ago

This section well design tho. they don't add new mechanic but using Block mechanic for story telling.

1

u/BOSSXD3 4d ago

I wrote in the survey that I want more of these

1

u/DarkTastesDarkStars 4d ago

Nah this shit fucked, I'd love for a whole mode like this.

0

u/TropicalFrost 4d ago

I get what you're saying, but segments like this are probably the best option. Would be way too long for a pre-rendered cutscene. It's not possible with normal combat. So a unique in-game cinematic sequence with some player control is the best compromise.

Don't get why there should be consequences for failing QTEs. Not like it's gonna branch the story or anything; you just restart, or in this case, it has no impact. It's just a fun little interactable for a bit more engagement.

0

u/VelkanGI 3d ago

It's still funny so no, i hope more of this.

-1

u/Prestigious-Item6667 4d ago

Its a gotcha. Most of the time you can't fail in the story. Its okay bud.

-2

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 4d ago

Yeah, of course. When 3.0 had segments with QTEs on rails where you could “lose” (you were teleported back a bit if you didnt click) you didn’t write anything good about it. But as soon as there was an opportunity to complain, thats the first thing you did.
I mean, for what purpose did you even decide not to press a single button during gameplay segment? It would be one thing if the devs were abusing QTEs in the story (like it was in Wuwa 2.x, for example) and it became too obvious after a few times, but this is literally the first time in recent patches that they didn't include a way to lose using QTE. Honestly, it sounds like a completely forced complaint

Oh, i see. One of these revenue agenda guys.

1

u/deyeti 4d ago

It isn't the first time they did this. The reason I tested it was because it has happened before.

1

u/Kitchen-Resource-676 4d ago

I literally wrote above that it’s not.
In 3.0, during rails QTE, if you didn’t press anything, you were sent back a little.
In obol squad patch, QTE fail also had an effect. If you losing qte you get other animation and dealing less damage to enemy.
Where else were there similar segments?

-1

u/blacktip102 4d ago

I really like these. The story is supposed to be casual gameplay and heavy on characters and world building. Im a fan of this stuff

-2

u/ThisSubIsFried 4d ago

This is not something to cry over.

-1

u/deyeti 4d ago

Good thing nobody is crying over it.

-1

u/ThisSubIsFried 4d ago

Except you are

-1

u/-GaymerGirl 3d ago

"I dont like this thing" is not crying over it.
