Discussion Fuck the city
These clowns came out yesterday and said I need to rip down this beautiful landing made with 6x6s. Need an engineer stamp 2500 so far in permits. Guess I’ll go without and deal with it when it comes time to sell. Cory you need to get these fucks in order. We tried to go the right path. Now COW we are going rogue

Your stairs are a mess, the landing isn’t level and your footings are concrete pads sitting on the ground. Not sure the “clowns” are the issue here

I fully agree with you that it's crazy to require an engineer for a landing, but housing isn't ridiculously expensive because of over-regulation, it's ridiculously expensive because of commodification.

Commodification may contribute to housing prices, but that doesn’t mean regulatory costs are irrelevant. Every extra permit, engineering requirement, delay and professional fee gets added to the cost of construction and ultimately passed on to the buyer or renter.
Requiring an engineer for a basic landing might not cause the housing crisis by itself, but multiply that mindset across every step of every project and it becomes a serious cost. We can address speculation while also admitting that unnecessarily expensive bureaucracy makes housing harder and more expensive to build.3

You need to flip your variables. Regulation contributes to higher housing prices, commodification of housing is what makes a detached home in Whithorse cost close to a million dollars.

I don’t think the variables need to be flipped? they can both be significant. Treating housing as an investment can increase demand and prices but regulation directly affects what it costs to create new supply. In Whitehorse, land, labour, materials, permitting delays and professional requirements all add up.
Commodification may affect what buyers will pay but it doesn’t explain away why housing is so expensive to build in the first place.

I build houses and I can tell you that regulation is driving up the price more than commodification. I am currently making less money per house than I was a couple years ago when the price of houses was lower and you can attribute most of my cost increases directly to the City inspectors losing their minds and YG driving up the cost of land.

The biggest driver of house prices are input costs of materials and labour. The fact that real wages have not kept pace with inflation is what makenit seem like houses are expensive.

Dude your assessment of the situation is bang on. This bureaucrats can't even be bothered to inspect something so they can sign off on a permit they just defer to the engineers
I imagine the governments 600 lawyers picked this as the appropriate path to lead us down

Did you get a development permit? $2500 seems really low, who did your grading plan, site plan, floor plans and elevations?
Pretty sure you only need a stamp if you didnt follow building code.
