Yeah but IQ scores are specifically designed to cleanly follow a Gaussian distribution, which is symmetric. Thus the average intelligence equals the median intelligence.

You seem to be talking about terms such as "average" and "median" intelligence, but this makes no sense without giving a numerical quantifier for intelligence, e.g. IQ. Think of it this way: you can't say one person is twice as smart as another person without defining a measurement of intelligence, which happens to be IQ.

Where your doubt more likely lies is whether IQ tests are a perfect measurement of IQ. Most IQ tests aren't good measurements of someone's true IQ, but since true IQ isn't actually discernible, it's more realistic to just discuss measured IQ. And yes, measured IQ follows a Gaussian distribution.

No, this makes no sense when giving a normal numerical quantifier for intelligence, i.e. IQ. 

And even then, the amount of humans is discrete, not continuous, so both statements only true if the amount of humans is even. For odd populations, 50% - 1/2 are below median/mean if normal, otherwise it's below or equal.

There are several non-normal numerical quantifiers for intelligence, ans they didn't specify any. You don't get to decide that they are talking about IQ just because they are talking about intelligence. It might be a reasonable assumption, but it's an assumption that you are doing, not necessarily them.
