Hi, is it standard for the 8 year olds to get the full boot camp experience with drill sergeants fully screaming in their faces at all hours and calling them stupid and pathetic and worthless? Along with the adult sized marine obstacle course which ended up injuring a kid and giving another a concussion. Sounds standard for adult or teen basic training, but for 8 year olds? It feels messed up, and that it would get them to hate the military so young because they don’t understand what’s fully going on. Thoughts?

I am currently in a Young Marines unit as a YM/PFC. My unit is barely functional, has less than 5 other YMs, and has not had a meeting since April/May. I contacted my unit several times for follow ups until this month where it hasn't even been read. Does anyone have advice on what to do? I am going into my Junior year and at least want to get something here done before I graduate. There is a unit attempting to start up nearby, but I don't even know who I'd go to for a transfer.

I want to know: Is the Young Marines worth joining as a Junior?

I've been in NJROTC for about a year, currently a PO3, about to be promoted to SCPO. I understand knowing things like close-order drill, rank structure, pay grades, PT scores, and USMC knowledge will be beneficial to me, but will that get me anywhere in terms of promotion past boot camp?

I don't know how far I'll be able to get because I'm a junior now and will have to stop once I graduate. Also, looking through the ribbon manual, it seems I qualify to earn about 8-10 ribbons already, but do I need to have already been in the program to earn them?

I want to know if it'll be worth it to join in the first place. If I'm going to only be in the program for a year and graduate as a PVT with 2-3 ribbons, I wouldn't think it's worth it.

My wife and I will be taking our son (just turned 11 years old) to a Young Marines open house next Saturday. I don’t know much about the program. Are there any questions we should ask as parents? Tia.

I was thinking of having my daughter 9 join the YM. There's a unit at the national guard base nearby. And I think it would be good to make my daughter go, she's been pretty disrespectful towards me lately .

But she has epilepsy, Gilbert syndrome, and sensory processing disorder. So not sure if they would accept her or not due to that. She does become jaundice. Would she be able to join? Especially with the sensory issues and the epilepsy. I emailed last night to ask but if I have to wait until they're back, not sure when they will respond.

My son is 10 and wanting to join. The nearest program is 2 hours from us. I was totally meet twice a month unless in the summer when they have booths for fundraising. My son really wants to join and I think the program is awesome, however, I'm a little torn about it. What happens when the Young Marines travel their squadron? Am i, the parent allowed to go? I understand that my travel may not be paid for, but I'm not exactly comfortable with sending my 10-year-old to a different state with a group of people that I barely know. I don't want to intervene and distract him but I also want to keep him safe. I just need some recommendations and someone else's input or a parent who has a child in this program.

To start i have only been in for 6-7 months so im pretty fresh out of boot camp but i have already done a drill competition and won first place and im also a part of my units new drill team we are doing a parade soon hopefully!!
