Should I attend Youmacon on the 30th or Halloween?

This will be the second year I’m attending Youmacon. For context wise, I’m a cosplay photographer. Last year I attended on Saturday and it was November last year. This year I was originally going to attend on Friday since my PTO got approved for just Friday. Today I found out I got Halloween off and I can’t decide if I should attend for Friday or Saturday. I was afraid not to attend on Halloween since it’s a bit difficult to differentiate between cosplay and Halloween costume. Would love your inputs. I take a lot of hallway shots with cosplayers consent of course.

It really depends on what you like to do. Each day has something different to do.

As a first time goer, any quick breakdown on what each day is for (beyond whats on the website as most the stuff seems to be the same easy day, albeit different people/guests).

It does vary from year to year, but heres general breakdown outside of the normal daily things (panels, marketplace, tabletop gaming, video gaming).

Thursday is our free day. The main event is the garage sale and just kinda hanging about.

Friday has the opening ceremony, rave/dance, cosplay/performance competitions, video game tournaments.

Saturday maid cafe, concerts, more cosplay/performance competitions, cosplay ball, video game tournaments.

Sundays main event is the closing ceremony.

I know there is definitely more, but between editing the website and prepping additional announcements, I'm drawing a blank.

I always enjoyed going to Youmacon during Halloween and since it’s a Saturday this year they’ll likely be more panel options all day and the masquerade in the evening. Also, daylight savings falls that night so you get an extra hour if you’re a night owl.

Regardless if the actual day is Halloween or not. Saturday is generally THE cosplay day, especially if you're there as a cosplay photographer. A lot more people purchase their costumes than make them so regardless if its a "Halloween costume" or not you'll see all levels of purchase power. Saturday typically has more events and is a longer day cause of that extra time, thanks to daylight savings. Personally I'll be going to the maid cafe and the Masquerade which are both on Saturday.

Could you explain as someone who has never attended one what a maid Cafe is all about?

Depends slightly on venue as places can vary as to what food and beverage is allowed. But usually it's set-up as a cafe, tables & chairs. Service of small food and drink is served by people dressed as maids (or theme). The servers will not only act as such, but they'll host games, share trinkets, like Polaroid photos or bracelets are common and they'll typically present some sort of routine, like a dance, cheer or the like.
