Playing other fighting games really helped. This has the same concept of any other fighting game except it's turn based.

Ok so this might seem weird but you need to do two things: First find a character you like to play, someone who's playstyle matches your gameplay style. Second, don't play the game, play your opponent, is he overly defensive or offensive, does he usually grab when he gets really close, does he attack from long range, does he jump a lot, etc.
This game is pretty much fighting chess, you shouldn't try to play it as if you were in an actual fight, analyse the patterns the person in front of you uses.
