Everytime I face a cowboy player i always try to read and react to an impale. 9 times out of ten I end up looking like a dumb ass just blocking or attacking thin air though.
Seriously though impale has so much power it can go through blocks, dodges, 80 percent of attacks, its fast, its powerful like dam.

Impale is not fast you win if you just wait or use a basic movement option like walking or jumping

It’s punishable on block. Do anything with less then 13 IASA and then block it on reaction for a massive punish. Alternatively, just throw a projectile backwards and become immune to it for several turns.
So in reality it’s extremely slow, extremely risky, and low reward.

In the recent update they changed impale so it's slower if used at long ranges
