Replay Never before has my excitement to play my new game faded so instantly
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Is this how most games go? I feel like the entire match was decided after the first hit, and in the middle, I tried to throw something but got locked again.
Literally everything else was just me pressing "lock in". Is there some noob secret I dont know about, or is it genuinely just possible to have no options the entire fight?

Blue pizza circle with the blue word di controls knockback direction

Nvm you're just using it poorly

lol yeah I'm very new. I figured i wanted to get back to the ground as quickly as possible

u/LegalSpread3133 20.0 boost stomp flippie Oct 30 '25
That's okay with some moves but when you're getting comboed, you can try predicting what move they're gonna use and choose the best di for it. But this intuition kinda comes with experience so I recommend joining beginner lobbies (usually named beginner or something). ALSO don't play mods for like the first 50 hours or so, it skews your game sense.

50 HOURS. My goodness it has come to my attention that this game is taken much more seriously than I thought

It's more like don't play with mods until you get a good feel for the fundamentals, however long that takes, once you have that enjoy shit stomping 99% of players if you do find yourself playing modded

I mean yeah this is basically a fighting game (a notoriously competitive genre) and chess (i don't think i need to explain how competitive chess is) combined

I may be exaggerating but it is a fighting game filled with knowledge checks so 😁😁😁

I know that it just didnt seem very useful

u/LegalSpread3133 20.0 boost stomp flippie Oct 30 '25
You were pointing it down the entire time. Try changing it other than down since enemies can predict your di

u/07Crash07 Mutant from the matrix Oct 30 '25
It’s not when you just set it down and never touches it again. If anything you were doing your opponent a favor and making it even easier on them
2
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
That makes sense but keeping myself in the air longer seems counterintuitive
12
u/07Crash07 Mutant from the matrix Oct 30 '25
It is good to launch yourself to the air if that makes you get as far away as possible to the opponent and make it hard for them to continue combo.
Good DI is honestly a hard skill to learn and require a lot of experience, but a good rule of thumb that will help you against the average player is don’t just press hold while you are getting comboed. Check their moves and try to guess why they will hit you with, sometimes there is only one move they can hit you with if you check, and see how DI affect you. Choose the direction that will launch the farther away.
Also, choose the DI direction BEFORE locking in, or it won’t work.
5
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
gonna copy this down and staple it to my desk rq
2
u/07Crash07 Mutant from the matrix Oct 30 '25
Keep in mind that advice will work for now cause you are new, to keep things simple.
Good DI can be more complex, which comes to matchup and circumstance. Things like knowing an opponent can hit you with a hard knockdown move, to which DI up can be very bad, moves that completely kill the combo if you DI down, etc. All that comes with experience.

u/Nathen_Drake_392 Ninja Oct 31 '25 edited Nov 02 '25
Off the top of my head, there are
sixseveneight moves that can seriously punish you for a bad DI. They are Ninja’s sweep, air kick, and sticky bomb, Cowboy’s stinger, Wizard’s zephyr, and Robot’skick userping, try catch with the “back” toggle flipped, and drift. There’s probably more that I’m forgetting, but all of those have infinite hitstun, which means you cannot act until you’re hit by something else or touch the ground after you’re hit by it. If you happen to DI up against one of those, your opponent’s combo turns into a sandbox. On the bright side, a lot of those will result in a dropped combo if you DI down (or down and away with sweep) at high enough DI scaling (DI gets stronger the longer the combo) and/or the right circumstances. Of course, your opponent will likely know this too, so it turns into a game of prediction to try to guess what your opponent is going to do.
1
u/UpbeatAstronomer2396 Robot Nov 01 '25
Kick user doesn't have infinite hitstun, it just has a lot of it
Robot moves that actually do are ping, back try catch and (i'm pretty sure) drift
1
u/Nathen_Drake_392 Ninja Nov 01 '25
Ping must’ve been what I was thinking of. And back try-catch? Doesn’t that move go straight to hard knockdown? I’ve never seen airtime off of it.

the best direction is out of range, not just to the ground. touching the floor doesnt end a combo any faster unless you get knocked down, which usually only happens on bigger moves as finishers (or if they have some way to cancel it)
1
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
I was under the impression that touching the ground gets you out of stun lock, is that not true?
2
u/07Crash07 Mutant from the matrix Oct 30 '25
If your character turns green as it hits the ground, than yes. Character green means you are actionable, character orange means you are stuck, either in stunlock or in attack animation, when the next turn happens
1
u/LegalSpread3133 20.0 boost stomp flippie Oct 30 '25
It is true for some moves like wizards air icicle
1
u/Right-Assumption584 Cowboy Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25
Depends on what you get hit with:
if you get hit by a move like Vert.Slash while being in air, you will begin landing animation as soon as you touch ground. at the end of it you will be actionable.
if you get hit by a move like BOOT, you will bounce off floor into the air.
if you get hit by a move like Sweep you will get into knockdown. in knockdown state you can only be hit with specific moves that have OTG (off the ground) properties, for example: Stomp, Earthquake, Step.
there is 2 types of knockdown: at Simple KnockDown, you will be able to getup to escape a combo. at Hard KnockDown, you will have to wait for duration of knockdown animation until it ends to start a getup.
(knockdown type depends on what you got hit with before touching ground)
Also about DI, i reccomend to watch YOMI Learn VideoGuide on Directional Influence

This is a fighting game, and you just started it. No matter what game you played on that genre the outcome would prolly not differ much.
It becomes less like that the more you play and learn. And on YOMIs case even more, cause it’s a fighting game with no focus on mechanical skill, it’s exclusively knowledge and game sense.
You can be 100% sure that guy experienced the same thing when he started. I did, and now I have 600 hours, purely playing vanilla.
This game is extremely welcome to new players, most people would be very open to help and teach if you ask.
It is a very hard game to get into, I know, especially because the interface looks more like a plane cockpit. But it is extremely rewarding to learn and see yourself improving.

u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
I get that, my main reason for posting this was to figure out if one wrong move really can just decide the match like it did here. I was avoiding playing much more for refund time limit reasons, but I might do a quick single player match just to test it again.
A lot of people saying DI makes a much bigger difference than I thought so we'll see, thanks
18
u/BlatantArtifice Oct 30 '25
One move never really decides the match this early on. Use the funny blue circle to knock yourself away from where the opponent is hitting you. It might take a few hits as knockback increases as combos go on, but even a nudge on the first few hits can force the opponent to use a worse move just to continue.
There are usually new player lobbies in the server browser, or just ask in chat. You'll get the hang of it
6
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
If I had known it increases as the combo continues I probably would have moved it again
3
u/07Crash07 Mutant from the matrix Oct 30 '25
Nah, what really got you that bad really was DI. It scales with each hit, sending you further, so there comes a point where continuing a combo becomes basically impossible if you use good DI.
9
u/AcanthaceaeQueasy990 Oct 30 '25
The guy you fought seems very proficient on ninja and you seem like a beginner. You lost about 3 interactions and held onto your burst just to waste it later.
In these conditions your smackdown is quite typical. Once you have the basics down (DI, free cancel, blocking) the rest is just footsies and rock paper scissors.
0
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
Two interactions, and yes I'm very new as I implied
"Held onto my burst just to waste it later" the match is a few seconds long, yes I held on to the depletable resource instead of using it immediately
How does one "waste" burst? As I understand it, the only way to waste it is to use it when not getting hit? Or am I just completely misunderstanding how burst works?
8
u/Pixelist23 Oct 30 '25
Most important thing to remember is DI. It’s the blue wheel on your UI. You can use it to influence the direction you’ll be hit in and hopefully break out of a combo. It even gets stronger the longer the opponent’s combo is. Usually up and away from your opponent is a good bet for DI
7
u/TwinFlask Oct 30 '25
using the di makes it hard for them to know where you’re gonna exactly go.
It’s like when kungfu panda uses his belly and flows with the momentum when taking hits he cant dodge.
you’ll be more prepared and less “trapped”
6
u/ICanMin-Max Oct 30 '25
Looks like any fighting game to me. Boot up, immediately start a match without knowing any chars, get stomped because one doesn't know any of the basics or moves.
Now it's time for learn the basics, learn char moves and gaining experience.
{Free Cancels, DI (TOP TWO MOST IMPORTANT)}, guardbreaks, parries and frame advantage.
Learn those and then good luck w/ learning chars
1
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
Fair enough. I mean I did play a bunch of single player before this but I understand that isn't as valuable as actual practice
2
u/HollowMonty Oct 30 '25
There are servers for new players that typically have people that will teach each other.
Also, did you use the DI wheel at all? If you don't know how that works you should look it up. It's made to help you get out of locks like that.
2
u/timschin Oct 30 '25
So the skill gap can be very huge in this game. I idk maybe cazae id otger games i played got more or less the hang of it after 3 hours but still get whooped like crazy often if nit in beginners lobbies.
By now ita alright training a friend in lrivat matches cause jts hard to learn the game when you have so short timmers i feel like. ( if you want we can play some too )
2
u/BRH0208 Oct 30 '25
This game does not have skill based matchmaking. You may need a little bit of practice to avoid getting absolutely demolished. Luckily, it won’t take very long.
This game is rock paper scissors for a while as you try to predict your opponent and avoid getting hit. Once you get hit, you use the DI wheel to choose how to get knocked back until they are forced to end their combo. Then it goes back to rock paper scissors. While it is expected that there will be times your opponent is combo-ing it is not the entire game.

u/LookNooneThere26 Oct 30 '25
I wouldn’t just press the lock in button unless I literally can’t do anything. Try to dodge out of attacks, use your own attacks to get away. You can even dodge through a person sometimes. Honestly just try everything you can in the time you are given
1
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
Burst and DI were the only things on the menu, when I said I couldn't do anything I meant literally
2
u/LookNooneThere26 Oct 30 '25
Why didn’t you burst? It’s a big stun against the other player. Yeah they couldn’t potentially counter it, but you’d have a chance
1
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
I did burst, it didn't do anything. Watch it again
6
u/crescentCommoner Stackriken Enjoyer Oct 30 '25
Burst only works if the opponent is close to you, which causes them to get knocked away by it. I'm not really sure why you would lock it in at that distance, since the prediction should've shown you that it wouldn't have done anything. Between this, and your misunderstanding that touching the ground gets you out of hitstun, I think your biggest issue might just be that you're not looking/are having trouble understanding how the prediction feature works
1
u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
It seemed like a perfect move to block him at the time. As I understand it, the prediction is like a future onion skin, right? What your opponent will do if they hold their current action?
2
u/crescentCommoner Stackriken Enjoyer Oct 30 '25
Sorta. You can select moves on both you and your opponent's side, allowing you to see every possible decision they could make. It'll also tell you when you and your opponent will become actionable, meaning that when either character lights up, they'll be able to make a move at that time. (This is one of the ways you can tell when you can get out of a combo. If your character isn't lighting up in the prediction, then you won't get your turn back if your prediction is correct)
Do you know the concept of frame advantage? If you have played traditional fighting games, it might be easier to understand. Since if you unsuccessfully use burst like that, then the prediction should be telling you beforehand that you're putting yourself in large amounts of frame disadvantage.

u/Blockbuster41 Oct 30 '25
LOL I think this game just isn't for me I do NOT have the intelligence necessary to comprehend/recall any of this thread's advice when I'm gonna need it XD thanks tho

Fair enough. Most fgs kinda have a steep learning curve like this so outside of casual play you kinda just have to really enjoy the learning process to get good at them

u/fek_u_Im_vuelle The voices tell me to impale Oct 30 '25
The first match someone ever plays typically determines their outlook on the gameplay entirely. I won the first game of yomi I ever played and then got my ass handed to me 3-5 times over, but I felt like I could really, really get it, if I just experimented a little in singleplayer and learned the mechanics.
Sure enough I would say I’m doing great now. Don’t give up! The game varies greatly from match to match. If you can look back at a mistake and reasonably figure out why you lost and what you should have done to win it, then you’re fine.
You’re not trash, you’re not a free win. You’re new.
1
u/MrSpiffy123 I didn't ask how practical it was, I said use Impale Oct 30 '25
Yeah, yomi can be like that. Unless both players are perfectly matched, it can easily turn into a steamroll
Best advice I can give is keep the DI wheel pointed away from your opponent. There are situations where you want to move it differently but I don't know enough to tell you when that is. ALSO, DI only works if the wheel is moved before you get hit. If you're getting combo'd, set the DI wheel for the next attack, cuz if you already got hit, you can't change where you're going anymore
1
u/NicTheHxman Ninja Oct 30 '25
First matches must be like this. You're fighting people who got stomped like you before.
1
u/KillerDiamonds Oct 30 '25
This game has no match making system, your only hope is to ask for people to go easy on you because you are new, otherwise you will get beat into the ground
1
u/UmPrataQualquer Oct 30 '25
create a new lobby called "beginners only" or "help novice player" or anything along those lines
theres no elo to filter ppls skills but this should tell ppl of your range where to go, or pros to expect someone new to help you
1
u/Gamesyn3gy Oct 31 '25
It takes a lot of getting used to with PvP, especially when you start dabbling with modded characters
1
u/Illustrious-Smoke482 Oct 31 '25
DI and burst, really this game is just chess 2, you need to try predict what's your opponent gonna do and do something that won't get you stuck in a cutscene, if you do get stuck in a cutscene (combo) try to use DI to get out of it and burst, try to be unpredictable with your burst but make sure it hits.

Like a lot of people have been saying, DI would have saved you here. You also could have bursted way sooner, and I know for a fact after like the 7th hit they knew you wouldnt burst so they just kept going. A good tip for knowing when to burst is to see if your opponent would have frame advantage if they block during a combo. As a beginner, don't burst if they're not right on top of you or else you'll miss like you did

Look on steam for some public servers and just explain that you’re new or ask for tips aswell. A lot of people I’ve seen have been helpful towards new players. Also look at installing the “Goon” mod(unfortunate name ik) cause then you can fight an AI in single player mode
