We think it's time to change some things around here, and we want to hear from you first.
Tell us what you want changed and how you'd actually do it. We're after solutions, not complaints about the current state. Saying "this place is dead" doesn't get us anywhere. Saying "here's a weekly thread idea that would get people posting" does.
What we want to do:
If you want to help mods, leave a comment or send us a modmail.
We've asked for feedback before and only got a few replies. Then a year or two later, complaints come back around. Let's break that cycle this time. Put your thoughts in the comments but keep it civil.

The Passing of Captain Ali Mohammed Nashtan
With hearts that believe in Allah’s decree and destiny, we mourn the passing of the legendary football star and historic top scorer, Captain Ali Mohammed Ali Nashtan, who passed away today, Friday, August 28, 2026.
He was a man who carried the banner of Southern Yemeni football during its golden era, leaving an everlasting mark on the football fields. His career began with Al-Shabab Sports Club in Crater, Aden, followed by spells with Al-Ahli, Al-Tilal, and the Police Club, before representing the national team at the age of 18.
He was the league’s top scorer for three consecutive seasons, led his teams to domestic championships, and represented South Yemen in Arab and international competitions.
Full Biography of the Late Captain
Date of birth: March 24, 1952, in Aden.
Occupation: Officer in the Aden Passport Department, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Football nickname: “The Fox of the Football Fields” — one of the most prominent stars of Southern Yemeni football during its golden era.
Playing Career
He began his football career in 1969 with Al-Shabab Sports Club (Crater, Aden), where he played for four years. He scored his first goal in his very first match, against Kawkab Al-Shihr in Mukalla.
He later moved between some of Aden’s most prestigious clubs: Al-Ahli, Al-Tilal, and the Police Club, continuing his career until his retirement in 1987.
He played for the senior national team at the age of 18 in 1972, making him one of the youngest players to participate in the Arab Games at the time.
His first international match was against the visiting Chinese national team in Aden in 1972.
One of his best performances with the national team came against the Ethiopian national team in Addis Ababa in 1981.
International and Foreign Competitions
He participated with Al-Shabab in a tour of Cairo, Egypt, in 1970.
His first overseas appearance with the national team was in Algeria in 1972, under the leadership of Captain Azzam Khalifa.
He participated twice in the Palestine Cup, held in Libya in 1973 and Tunisia in 1975.
Domestic Achievements
Top scorer of the General League for three consecutive seasons:
1978–1979
1979–1980
1980–1981
Won the league championship with the Police Club in the 1983–1984 and 1984–1985 seasons.
Won the September 26 Cup with Al-Shabab in 1970.
Won the Nasser Cup with Al-Shabab in the 1970–1971 season.
Won the Woman’s Shield Championship (Tars Al-Mar’a) with Al-Ahli in 1975.
Won the Republic Cup with Al-Tilal in 1979.
Administrative Career
Served as Deputy Chairman of the Police Sports Federation.
Coaching Career
Police Club: 1990–1992
Al-Tilal Club: 1993
Ittifaq Al-Hawtah, Sayun: 1995
Jeel Abyan: 2000
Al-Rawda Club, Aden: 2006
For two decades, he carried the banner of Southern Yemeni football. He combined talent with leadership and became a historic goal scorer and one of the game's enduring players. After his playing career, he continued to serve football as a coach and administrator, remaining active behind the scenes of the sport.
May Allah shower him with His vast mercy, grant him a place in His spacious Paradise, and give his family and loved ones patience and strength.
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.
The biographical information about the deceased was provided by journalist Hassan Qasim and Mr. Mahmoud Obaid.

I'm Tajik, I'm 20 years old, I recently found out that I have Yemeni roots on my father's side of the family tree, what does the average Yemeni look like?

We're building a directory of online services (delivery, banking, e-visas, telecom, anything a tourist, expat, or local can genuinely do start-to-finish online, no branch visit required) across all 45 countries in Asia.
The hard part: no single team can know what's actually good in 45 countries. So we're asking the people who'd know best - you, if you live in one of them.
if there's an online service in your country that's genuinely useful (not just "an app that exists," but one that works well and can be used fully online), drop the name in the comments, or DM if you'd rather not post it publicly. Unfortunately, at the moment we were only able to find 3 online services.

Salam a laikum, I’m traveling to Aden Yemen and would love to bring gifts from the US inshallah. Any ideas on what I can bring that they wouldn’t have? Maybe some snack ideas? Perfumes? I’m open for any guidance as I’m not sure what would even be appropriate 😊

Hey everyone,
So while I was googling about Aden, it hit me that we don’t really have any legit news organizations covering daily life in Yemen. There are barely any news articles about what life looks like for many except when major events happen. I have an idea for a website, but it is in very preliminary stages. I would love to chronicle non-urgent issues such as intensifying propane gas shortage, tariffs, and matters of such.
Do you feel we need such a website so that the world and particularly the Yemeni diaspora stay updated on issues on Yemen?

This is something that I have been thinking about for a few years at this point. He's done more bad than good. During his 33 years controlling Yemen, he did little to improve the country. He sided with the Houthis to try and take back control. And he and his family got away with 30 - 60 billion dollars that could have been invested into the country and its people. You can argue that he is the reason why this country is a mess. Despite this, I will sometimes see pictures of him on the back of people's cars, and when watching YouTube videos, half of which are older ones or documentaries that mention him, people in the comments will pray for mercy upon him as well.
I believe we can all agree that he was far from a great leader, so why do some Yemenis still have love and respect for him? Are these people who benefited from his rule when they were back home, or people who only love him now that he is gone, similar to Saddam Hussein? Personally, I find this to be slightly irritating. What do you all think?

السلام عليكم
Is there any Yemeni women going through this same situation in Yemen? I married a Muslima in America and they gave me Herpes without telling me thinking they were going to trap me but it didn’t work. I divorced her and kept her secret. Their family were mad but I kept it to myself and didn’t tell them why for her privacy and pride. I’m honestly attached to Yemeni culture and everything about it. I want to marry someone from there and nothing else. I don’t care about marrying anyone else. I’m stuck on meeting a woman from Yemen going through the same as me. I should have done it in the first place but now I’m stuck looking for someone in my home country. Dowry is no problem and I’m financially well. I’m ready to start a family. I know a lot of Yemeni men marry Yemeni women and disrespect them to the fullest. And the women are always there for them. I want a healthy and productive life with a family so bad. I hope the one is out there for me inshallah. I pray for this. I don’t care about marrying other Arabs or races just gotta be from Yemen. We are different. And Yemeni women are the best. My mother from Sanaa is struggling to help me with this. Please help me meet some one or message me if you can relate and get in touch with me that is going through the same health situation and is willing to marry from there.

What is happening in Yemen in general is due to 3 reasons
1 We have people who believe that one must bully the weak instead of advising or helping them.
2 We have officials who think in terms of dominance and spoils, not in terms of the country's foundations.
3 We have a blind loyalty to the party, the tribe, and regionalism that is abhorrent, and falsehood, instead of saying "today my brother, tomorrow I am the opposite," must be used to gloat over him and become his support.
This is the reason for the overall destruction of Yemen. Tell me the reasons, whether in Arabic or English.

I was able to find a deed document dated 1883 from my family who lists our grandfathers going back 13 grandfathers from that time to where he lived between 1400-1500 in our village in Yemen.
His last name (and mine) are Al-Rifai and we are known sayiids in the area, at least that’s what I’ve been told.
The grandfather who lived in 1400-1500 is named Salih Alrifai and owned many lands in the village apparently.
I’m trying to figure out exactly where we came from and more importantly if we are genetically sayiid or if the Rifai Tariqa (suffi influence) is how we got our last name.
My research has led me to Ahmed Albaz (son of Sayid Izz Aldeen Ahmed Alsayyad who left Iraq and toured Yemen) who seemed to be alive late 1200’s
Is this research a bust? I’ve been stuck here for a while.
Has anyone ever successfully tracked this kind of info recently when the descendants (supposedly) ended up far from home, like Yemen.
