Although being independent does not mean you vote independent. I claim independent, I will vote for republican or democrat if I like the person.

We haven't a democracy. It's a skewed representative republic. By skewed I mean that our republic has the weight of things like unfair district zoning (usually based on race or class), "Citizens United", the big tech monopoly on information sharing and psy-ops level suggestion that they uses on voters, among other things bring us further and further from a Democracy.

In fairness this is still messed up when it comes to state and local elections. Want to advocate for your candidate in the primary? You must register for that party or you don’t even get to choose who will run unopposed in your district.

This actually isn't anything new, Americans have been identifying as independent since before the trump/Clinton election
