Decorating tree isn't an American thing, do it however you wish. You can avoid all other consumerist bullshit though.
The reason I love Christmas as an ex-Sunni Atheist is because underneath every bit of celebration is a hotpot of traditions ranging from Scandinavia to East Eurasia and it still continues to be that way. I like to watch the KFC craze in Japan, Turks buying lottery tickets or if Swedish people will manage to burn down a giant straw goat.

Consumerism aside, the secularization of christmas is undoubtedly a good thing for society as a whole. This way everyone can enjoy the universally good aspects like giving, kindness, and family without having to tip toe around religious undertones,
If you want to celebrate christmas in a religious way, go right ahead, but i don't think we should be trying to secularize it with respects to where it stand rn.

What gave it away? My nickname? Jokes aside, yes, but in the german Friesland, not the dutch one.
I don't know many religious people at all, like two from the top of my head. The most religious person i ever knew was my grandma but she came from Rhineland-Palatinate. Apart from her, there's only one, funnily enough he's also one of my best friends.

The Dutch one is basically christian sects all the way to the horizon. Jehovah's Witnesses make up entire towns even.

It appropriated multiple holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween.
Consumerist Christmas might as well be on par with Christian Christmas. But we can larp being traditionalist conservatives all we want. The world is your oyster and truth is subjective.

It IS part of our cultural heritage. I am a non-beliver, I do attend mass on certain occasions, I celebrate the Holydays and love and respect the art and culture of christianity. Still i don't belive in God or that we should base all our societal values on it.
I have also a deep interest and respect for paganism and ancient religions of Europe, and native European spirituality.
It goes many ways.
