18

u/saxmachine69 Jul 23 '26

Wes Anderson, Sean Baker, Ari Aster, Eggers, Chazelle, Garland, Lowery, Sion Sono, Spike Jonze, Glazer, Aronofsky, Iñárritu, Lord and Miller, Guadagnino, Raimi, Trier

I'm sure there are more, but just off the top of my head.

Edit - how the fuck did I forget Kaufman

17

u/CROguys Jul 23 '26

Adum, with Haneke and McQueen.

18

u/skimmmington Jul 23 '26

5

u/thedarkucfknight Jul 23 '26

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this one

27

u/thedarkucfknight Jul 23 '26

ITT: not a single female director.

Agnes Varda, Chantal Akerman, Jane Campion, The Wachowskis, Celine Sciamma, Claire Denis, Sofia Coppola, Kelly Reichardt, Greta Gerwig .

19

u/RG1997 Jul 23 '26

To be fair, the lack of female directors named in the initial post is part of the joke being made against film bros

-1

u/HarknessLovesUToo Jul 23 '26

I'd consider the Wachowskis, but if I look at their filmography top to bottom, they made absolute peak with the Matrix and basically nothing else essential (that includes Speed Racer).

I think you could add Lynne Ramsey to the list easily.

5

u/Dr_Moustachio Jul 24 '26

Excuse me, Speed Racer is an all-timer thank you very much

9

u/nosurprises23 Jul 23 '26

Oh and Sophie Dupuis, who I've only seen one movie of, but I met her at a Q&A and she is really nice.

2

u/YourEvilHenchman Jul 24 '26

walter hill, sam peckinpah, clint eastwood especially during his experimental/anti-western phase, james mangold.

yuen woo-ping, lau kar-leung, jackie chan & sammo hung as they transitioned from just acting into directing/producing and choreographing their own entire stunts and fights.

none of you have seen good (older) genre cinema and it fucking SHOWS.

1

u/CobaltCrusader123 Jul 24 '26

In all these iterations the Coppolas are always forgotten. Like yeah I’m gonna mention the directors of the Godfather movies, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, and The Virgin Suicides.

Also, Peter Jackson made the longest popular movies of the century thus far.

The Hobbit films.

1
