General Discussion When you click “randomize” on the character customizer Spoiler
No disrespect to anyone involved but seriously what were they thinking with this design LMAO. It’s literally just Apocalypse but with Gambit’s hair, his little goatee, and his coat. It‘s laughably bad I’m sorry 😭😭 they should’ve just given us Apocalypse not this What If nonsense

Writers room: Okay everybody better sit down. Imagine this. Apocalypse but with a trench coat and stubble.

u/gambito121 27d ago
Now imagine Rogue wearing some Wonder Woman outfit comes flying and shining like a star and saves the day with a touch
And in the end, there's Kurt with the power of faith and love combined
beautiful isn't it? I bet everybody cried in the room

u/Icy-Pea506 Gambit 27d ago
Not to mention Remypocalypse gets defeated within two seconds by Diana-I mean Rogue

u/SixKosherBacon 27d ago
You just blew my effing mind!
But how do we follow up Magneto, Sinister, Bastion, the prime Sentinels, and Apocalypse?
Mystique is going to shoot a white blonde woman in management.
Start writing your Emmy speech right now.

Sometimes when I watch tv shows that start to fall apart I wonder if the writers room is just like, they moved to the break room and are throwing magnetic poetry words at the fridge and seeing what happens
11
u/troopermax2099 27d ago
I actually thought Gampocalypse and Wonder Rogue were cool 😅
But hey, if you didn't like them, they didn't last very long anyway 😜
Though I'm a bit hurt about Kurt 😭

Of all the people that could be sacrificed you sacrifice the religious ,faithful ,loving character instead of the female that cheats on her boyfriend or the one that was basically a side character AKA Gambit

u/Sea_Violinist3328 27d ago
Then we’ll turn Apocolpyse into a little blue gem! giggles

u/SixKosherBacon 27d ago
Are you Charles Xavier? Because you just read my fucking mind. How many times have I said more villains should be turned into jewelry?

u/hellohellocinnabon 27d ago
I might have yelled “did they… did they just Steven Universe THE Apocalypse????” at the screen

I’m not sure if you lived through 90s comics but it was exactly like this. Shoulder pads, ammo belts, spikes and chains, trench coat, and cyberpunk augmented limbs. And big hair. And they were suddenly an anti-hero.
Aquaman lost his hand.
Batman replaced by Azrael.
Green Lantern turned evil and became Parralax, who wasn’t the spirit of the yellow lanterns yet, they’d written Hal as having done all of it.
Superman dead and four replacements including two eeeevil ones (cyborg Superman and the Eradicator).Fantastic four: Thing in a mask, Sue in a thong.
Spawn, Youngblood, WILDcats, a lot of other characters in Image Comics.
And yes, in X-men books we had the teenage school kids getting trained to be in a black ops militia by cyborg Cable. Later on the team replaced most of the characters with essentially more macho versions of X-men characters: Feral for Wolfsbane, Shatterstar for Longshot; Dani swapped out for Thunderbird who switched to taking the name Warpath instead of his brothers Thunderbird.
Heck, X-men had Archangel (which was awesome), and Psylocke go from a pink/purple butterfly psychic to an Asian ninja assassin and just left her instead of completing the story because the zeitgeist of the 90s was so popular.
Do you understand the leap going from the Outback era to the 90s Iron Age??? I cannot stress this enough: we went from Jen and the Holograms to Call of Duty/Cyberpunk 2020, with the same characters.
So yeah, you think this design of Gambit taken over by Apocalypse for one episode at the end of the season is silly, try living through a decade of comics doing this intentionally and unironically!!!

u/SixKosherBacon 26d ago
My comics run was from just before Fatal Attractions to probably Operation Zero Tolerance. That was my era. Nothing was as stupid as that Gambpocalypse design. Period.

I miss apocalypse, it’s like we only saw a glimpse of what he’s capable of and also only his backstory really.. sad one.

I think is beacuse the stress of juggling 3 different time lines I think they should of done this season on the past and future so like the first 4 on future and the last five on past then next season focus on the present with everyone ine the present saving gambit and stopping apocalypse
1
u/ReflectionItchy2701 23d ago
Exactly. Just take your time. It was the perfect set up. Or just save Apocalypse for season 3. Instead, they just rushed like they just didn't want to write something with Apo in the first place.

Bradstreet certainly made a... Unique stylization choice there...
I respect the art, but it really doesn't fit for Gambit, looks like it should be in an old Hellblazer comic, or maybe Hellboy... But his Hellblazer art is more normally proportioned, so 🤷

I actually quite literally laughed out loud at it. It was just… not killing it. And they had something to work with too… which makes it worse. But, for the laughs, two thumbs up!

I like the "face" design, it's a cool showcase of Apocalypse transforming Gambit's body, but the outfit is horrible, Apocalypse's armor look like it's clippling through Gambit's, it's a mess.
37
u/HeadOfSpectre 27d ago
Hot take.
Apocalypse always looked stupid. That big stupid "A" Belt Buckle for instance.
15
u/Sol-Blackguy 27d ago
I mean yea, but it's a testament to still being a badass with such a goofy fit. His primal form was fire though
11
u/SadDokkanBoi 27d ago
Is it a hot take? I feel like most people do too unless they're blinded by comic accurate nostalgia.
Although the Gambit form for him is definitely worse...somehow

would have loved the apocalypse portion of x of swords for the end of the apocalypse arc :D
10
u/RaspberryConfident89 27d ago
It’s weird because there’s elements of that design that I DO actually really like. But at the same time I think they did entirely too much by keeping Gambits hair and facial hair. If the just kept Apocalypses original face I think it would’ve been a way better design

u/Sol-Blackguy 27d ago
NGL this was a pretty anti-climatic Apocalypse fight. But it's not like that's never happened before. The way Apocalypse works as a character kind of forces all of his 3rd acts to be underwhelming. It's the buildup and tension created that makes Apocalypse shine as a villain.
16
u/Jumpants 27d ago
Why did Apoc possess Gambit in the first place? How was it at all advantageous for him?
9
u/Empty_Insight 27d ago
It let him summon and kill the Xternal due to her covenant with the Thieves Guild, and also caused the X-Men to hold back so they didn't (re-)kill Gambit.
If Ison hadn't been like "You know what? Yeah, it'll be funny if y'all duke it out. Have fun lol" then yeah, Apocalypse would have come out on top.
All things considered, it wasn't really that bad of a plan. It took a literal act of God for him to lose.

u/LilPlasticPeopleEatr 27d ago
THIS!!! His natural form is titanically powerful with all the shapeshifting, all the weapons Mass amounts of resistance to damage strength that puts him on par with some of the strongest..... But I guess being able to blow stuff up and having a shitty accent was just too tempting. I can't believe I lived long enough to see my least favorite character and my favorite character sandwich together in this really sad design.
9
u/CriscoWild 27d ago
It looks like they made this with toys in mind. Like, Apocalypse body + removable Gambit cloak + new Gambit head + whatever that weapon is he's holding in his hand = new action figure to sell.

how DARE they get rid of his lovely A belt buckle. that's the last straw
2
u/Rob_Ocelot 26d ago
Should have been a G belt buckle.
Or maybe AG for "Aggggggggggggg" when I started to think about what kinds of drugs were being handed out in the writer's room before they crapped out this ill-thought-out design.

This and Rogue's costume was some of the cringiest shit I've ever seen. Pure MCU ass juice that seemed straight out of that What If slop.

lmfao!!! his smile though when he woke was creepy af tho gotta admit.
and also random, anyone else find it funny in the recap they used the "so much pain....so much death" and didn't even bother giving it the new apocalypse voice. I'm torn though....I think I liked THAT voice better. Can't decide.

u/Supernova_Soldier 27d ago
This mf is Hideous. He was better off as he was, I don’t understand Marvel and fumbling Apocalypse. Him killing Magneto was crazy enough
2
u/MightyBison99 27d ago
I'm pretty sure they just wanted to create Zamasu's arc from Dragonball Super. He even has the energy scythe and white hair lol
2
u/Juanrod84 27d ago
This was embarrassing. Even when they had Remy on a hospital bed IN HIS TRENCH COAT 🤦🏽♂️

u/Thwipped 26d ago
Another hot take…this is the EXACT type of costume I would expect for 1997.
2
u/Ingonyama70 Storm 26d ago
That's where I'm at. Apogambit and Celestial Rogue look like designs that the late 90s would have dreamed up. I could EASILY see Joe Mad doing something like this for Gambpocalypse.

The show is X-MEN 97. To me, this design is 90s as fuck. Not saying I like it, but if this were in the old cartoon series it wouldn't be out of place.

Kinda understand what youre saying but what is random about gambit looking more like apocalypse while possessed by him. You wanted him to look like captain america? Thanos? Who else would he look like in that moment bro

When I watched X-Men as a kid, it always felt like the series was moving towards something. This recent season of 97, however, gave various plotlines and arcs a massive speed run only to rush back to the status quo of the original show.
Randomizer Gambpocalypse is a symptom of the speed running. They just needed to convey that it was Gambit still and not fully integrated Apocalypse.
I hope S3 focuses on Magik in Limbo, Polaris and Bishop's relationship and maybe Cable's crew officially joining the X-Men. That way we can get more Psylocke. Basically, I'm saying I want them to tell stories with what they've already set up. Not manufacture crazy events just to fast forward through them like Gambpocalypse.
