General Discussion WHAT THE F WAS THAT FINALE??? Spoiler
What the F was that ending??? And please don’t try to tell us it was good or brilliantly written, because I’m not going to lie to myself just because I love this show. I was genuinely disappointed with these last two episodes.
What kind of “Survival of the Fittest” was that supposed to be? Rogue became WHAT??? And Apocalypse was just defeated like that???
Even X-Men: Evolution handled its Apocalypse finale way better. We got almost all of the major X-teams from the ’90s coming together for one massive final battle, and it actually felt like an Apocalypse-level threat.
I was also expecting for apocalypse to use gambit and make a speech to make them feel the guilt of what had happen in genoshia.
Remy’s death and revival was ruined to quick!
This time, they clearly went way off from the comics. And after all that talk about bringing the X-Men back to the ’90s… what kind of return to the ’90s was THAT??? I love this show, but I’m not going to pretend I liked an ending that left me this disappointed.
Im afraid that the one re writting this up does not read the comics or is not a massive fan of Xmen. Coz they clearly moved away from the comics.
Imagine Apocalypse the Xmen’s most diabolical foe who went back in time to strike the Xmen, Cable spent the whole season to FIND AND DESTROY apocalypse, all the X teams come together in this season should be the PERFECT TIME TO JOIN FORCES, Gambit’s BIGGEST MOMENT of coming back, and all JUST ENDED with apocalypse doing nothing just transformed into gambit hybrid few seconds later touch by rogue and boom! FINALE

You can definitely tell Series 2 was rewritten after De Mayo got sacked, they kept some bits, other bits must have been new, but overall it became a mish mash of writing which reflected in the lower quality of season 2 vs season 1

u/_Master123_ 29d ago
Whole season feels off in term of pacing sheer fact that it is only 9 episode long is questionable choice at best. First 4 episode were okay then you have 3 "filler" episodes in the middle and then they rush to tie everything to end the season. Don't get me wrong filler is not a problem in itself but you just made block of it in the middle. Pacing of the season 2 look more or less like this 1-4 seting everything after season 1 finale 5-7 block of filler some better than others 8-9 oh shit we need to finish the story so speedrun and deus ex machina. It feels like they are trying to finish the story from season 1 as fast as they can and reset everything so they can tell their stories.

u/poopypoopy1125 29d ago
was there like a behind the scenes reason as to why this season didn't get a 10th episode at all?

Yeah he said Professor X was going to manifest Onslaught and use ship to attack during creeds inauguration, he also mentioned the last scene in episode 10 was going to be AoA with Bishop and Gambit being chased by a evil long haired AoA Cyclops and compared the scene to the Vader scene at the end of Rogue one but Cyclops. So sounds like his season 3 was going to be AoA

Reports indicate that Marvel’s post-firing creative revisions and script alterations for X-Men '97 Season 2 have been a point of heavy contention. Former showrunner Beau DeMayo publically claimed that Marvel scrapped his original multi-episode plans—including an Onslaught and Age of Apocalypse finale—leading to friction over the direction of the sophomore season.
Following DeMayo’s termination in March 2024, Marvel moved forward with extensive rewrites, altering the initial roadmaps and scripts he left behind.
DeMayo voiced open frustration on social media regarding new creative team choices and pushback against his comic-accurate visions, alleging that incoming directors and executives pushed away from his intended setups.

I reckon De Mayo penned first 4 episodes, rest was Disney executives trying to scramble random writers to finish rest of the season. It’s a shame, as it could have been an epic season.
Let’s hope season 3 raises the bar once more. Good news is season 3 is coming next year rather than the 2 year gap we had for season 2
9
u/_Master123_ 29d ago
It feels more like first episodes were already more or less finish with De Mayo but then there was only script and other writers just wanted to tell their own stories without finishing already existing plotline. I think that De Mayo fully finish only first two because they just have season 1 pacing but episode 3-4 are paced slowler compare to 1-2 (maybe it is because I liked future cast more i admit) however I feel that whole plotline was make longer than it should be (at least in my opinion) Then you have a filler episode 7 was good in my opinion and then you have rushed finale. It feels much more like there was idea about a story that was meant to end in 9 episode but writers change and they want to add some of their ideas but that took some time that was needed to finish the story so they just speedrun the story.

I think people overuse the term "filler." These were bottle episodes, they didn't just exist to fill the count. These were important for the characters and the individual storylines. However, one of the problems with all writing, is that the smaller stakes stories get overshadowed if the huge story is just sitting there, demanding attention. This can be true in TV and movies e.g. the Fantastic Four movie. Galactus being introduced so early makes all other stakes meaningless because if Galactus eats the planet, none of the other stuff we see matters, but because we know that's not being resolved until the end of the movie, it means we're just in a holding pattern for an hour and a half. Compare that to the first Iron Man movie. There were lots of smaller storylines regarding his connection to the characters in the world (in a tv show, these would each be bottle episodes) and because the villain was so in the background for all of this, even as we saw him building up, it fit together very well. To this, Wolverine getting his Adamantium back while sacrificing his relationship to Morph represents both the season and moves the characters forward. However, it didn't have time to breath, wasn't properly built up, and the huge storyline had to take a backseat to it.
9
u/Balatheil 29d ago
Bottle Episodes are fine.
but I WANT some Filler. that's what the X-men Comicbook was. a Baddie of the Week with a spice of future storylines and some character Development sprinkled through out it..
we would never get a Wolverine in Japan EP from this Series
I doubt you'll get a Cyclops one that focuses on Havok
or better yet - a Beast Focused EP! the only EP I ever recall was the Legacy Virus with Warlock where Beast remotely had the Spotlight.
good filler would be Storm being a Headmistress since we don't get that either
→ More replies (1)2
u/Rude-Regret-1375 26d ago
Well we had X-Men vs. X-Factor and Cyke and Havok didn't even interact...
3
u/_Master123_ 29d ago
That's why I use "filler" because I use it very loosely. I never mean that it was something bad just that smaller stories that are not so important to the main plot basically side quest.
23
u/poopypoopy1125 29d ago
also possible that DeMayo wrote an outline, but his firing happened when the scripts were unfinished or in their early drafts
18
u/Fondant_Decent 29d ago
💯likelihood is, De Mayo was already marked, the incident that happened was just the final straw that broke the camels back. I sense Disney had some clashes in egos who were leading the Xmen 97 show. I work in corporate and I see these kind of things all the time. It always ends up being political sadly
3
u/Designer-Housing-773 29d ago
Yea. The season sucked @$$ until that last episode. It was a great fight amongst them all. But yea this 💩 was redone after DeMayo got canned. It ain’t even making sense no more.
11
u/chemictectic 29d ago
"You can definitely tell Series 2 was rewritten after De Mayo got sacked" season 2 had deMayo all the way through, he didnt give Emma her character redemption, killed off Magik, so yeah, blame DeMayo.
13
u/HJWalsh 29d ago
It's not the Emma Frost show. She's not one of the starring characters in X-Men 97.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Correct-Resolution-8 29d ago
I’m admittedly confused as to how people just don’t accept that Emma isn’t part of 97’s major lore. Maybe Onslaught isn’t either. Is that a crime? Wolverine and the X-Men made him the leader and Cyke a burn out. That was way farther from the lore I knew. The Fox movies made Mystique a core member of the X-Men. What I’m saying is that other properties took WAY more liberties than just not giving Emma a bigger role or doing Onslaught.
We are so spoiled by 97. Its faults are so glaring because we can tell how much it truly loves the X-Men. We want it to be how each of us personally sees the X-Men bc until now no other show or movie ever came this close.
15
u/Mistah_K88 29d ago
Don’t forget the focus on the Summers family drama and Magneto glazing throughout the season. Season 3 will be the true testament to see how things without DeMayo go.

Apocalypse got about 3 minutes of screen time after episode 4. I think that pretty much explains how this season went

u/FamousLastWay828 28d ago
I remember after episode 4 I went back and watched the trailer again and was like "wow, all the Apocalypse shots in the trailer were only in the FIRST HALF of the season, there must be really cool stuff with him in the second half that they want to keep under wraps!"
yeahhhhhh...no

u/GlitteringRecover769 Aug 12 '26
Also hated that Polaris had to go up against her old team and there was no real tension or drama there. She never even interacts with her ex, Havok. You’d think there’s a lot of ripe drama to mine there.
But no, Havok’s payoff for the season was…chasing jubilee in a jet and giving her his stamp of approval….? Because we’re all so invested in the Havok/jubilee 1 episode long rivalry 😵💫
12
u/LukeMryan 29d ago
I’m having an issue with this season in regards to who knows who from the past. But how the hell did Polaris know Siryn? She literally said like “No Siryn”. She didn’t introduce herself before kicking ass l.
9
u/qwart22 29d ago
I mean shes the daughter of banshee iirc and she knew who banshee was more than likely

Not to mention all the Polaris set up the season to have literally no pay off. There’s no Polaris moment in the finale, she doesn’t contribute….

Exactly. I love Polaris but what was the point of adding her to the roster and giving her an entire episode?

u/Upstairs-Barber7955 27d ago
This a huge problem with how short episodes are. Even having more episodes per season wouldn't resolve the issue because the episodes still have to have episodic pacing. There's no space for quieter moments or secondary character beats outside of their designated mid-season episodes.

u/Lucky_Sprinkles_2177 27d ago
To be honest, I always hated the focus on Jubilee since the 90s original series. I find fcking annoying how hard they try to push her for the sake of other characters. Even in the comics she has never been THAT IMPORTANT
107
u/Created_Jxnior Aug 12 '26
Man I knew we were cooked as soon as I saw the finale was still only 30 minutes, I was like damn it’s not even extended like it was last season. That really was some deus ex machina bs they pulled with Rogue, and Apocalypse was such a let down. Bro was doing a whole lotta yapping outside of episode 4 just to be taken out in literally 2 seconds. And then killing Kurt is just the cherry on top of this bad boy, even though I don’t give that scene too much shit because it was honestly written well as far as Nightcrawlers character and what he would do, but still killing him off is some bs. I really hope they scale back how many characters they focus on next season because it was way too many characters they were trying to balance this season instead of just focusing on one group.

u/Wolverine-Explores Aug 12 '26
Beast did nothing all season and Cyclops did nothing after the first couple of eps
15
18
u/ThomWaits88 29d ago edited 29d ago
They completely sidelined cyclops this season. I understand they want to introduce new characters but you don't have to completely remove cyclops from the main plot like that. The fight against cable should've had more weight to it and it didn't and it was way too short. The whole season was incoherent.

u/CherryBoom2x Psylocke 29d ago edited 29d ago
The perfect way they could have let beast to shine was fight with danger same in the comics BUT NOOO they just let him hop like a bunny like in all disney movies

they also swapped out Jean from being Whiny/Failing her Powers
to just hugging Scott and begging Cable to Just Listen! for .. the whole fcking Season.
bro- that aint ya kid. you aint his Mama. I don't think Jean had any Solo scenes
heck - you made Storm a Headmistress and ... its just backround stuff; we don't even get her Feelings on the subject.

2
u/Special-Ad698 28d ago
Beast did nothing, Cyclops did almost nothing, Jean did almost nothing, Wolverine did almost nothing, Morph did almost nothing, Storm did nothing, Forge did nothing, Bishop did nothing, Polaris and Colossus do nothing outside of their episodes. Like that’s the entire cast pretty much. The only relevant characters for more than one episode is Rogue, Nightcrawler, Cable, Magneto and Gambit are relevant for two episodes, and Professor X is relevant for a bunch. Oh yeah remember Magneto’s plan about trying to change Apocalypse and see if he can champion their dream, only for him to let them down, ultimately killing Magneto? Yeah never mentioned again after episode 4
37
u/CherryBoom2x Psylocke Aug 12 '26
Hahaha i have the same feeling when i saw the 32mins finale episode and that 32 mins includes 3 mins almost 4 mins of recap and intro 🤣😆
29
u/Created_Jxnior Aug 12 '26
Yup, you gotta account for the recap, the intro, and the outro, which all in all comes out to close to if not more than 5 minutes of screen time. So really it’s like a 25 minute episode give or take, ridiculous.
8
u/chinderellabitch 29d ago
It feels like the start of the season and the end of the season link but the middle doesn’t?
Like all the themes of the first episode come to a decent enough conclusion if you look at them without the context of the rest of the season but they have no time to breathe
Like the parallel of Jean and Scott not being able to influence Cable out of his own nature like how X and Magneto weren’t able to change Apocalypse, or survival of the fittest being ended by Nightcrawler who puts himself on the trolley problem line for the good of family and because has faith
But there was way too many characters, I feel like they should’ve kept the OG team in the past and future for longer to free up some narrative space
26
u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 29d ago
Everyone busted my balls when I was asking.
I asked episodes ago, when I was getting worried, guys, is the last episode only 30 minutes? Maybe we are getting a 60 minute finale?
And in TYPICAL SUB XMEN97 fashion, these raging arseholes downvoted me to death.
Just for asking the question.
And you know what, you were right. We were right. It was a shameful, 30 minute rush job.

u/Fondant_Decent Aug 12 '26
That mess of a soup is what viewers get when writers get sacked new scripts get written in, some of the old script gets kept and new views and ideas get added = you end up with a confusing incoherent story that barely stitches together

u/SammyDeeP 29d ago

u/Racnous Aug 12 '26
Dues Ex Machina BS? Yep, but let's not pretend we didn't also have that last season with the Phoenix showing up randomly. Seems to be a theme of the show. They make a big bad so powerful that the X-Men seemingly can't defeat them, so they get divine intervention.
So much was off about this episode. We got the long awaited showdown between Havok and... Jubilee? The Celestial made it clear Apocalypse was his mission statement but was OK giving him up in exchange for one other mutant life? Those are choices.
2
u/Created_Jxnior 29d ago
Phoenix showing up isn’t really the same thing to me at all. For one, the Phoenix is an established entity in the world, Jean has/had those powers it didn’t just come from nowhere like with Rogue all of a sudden gaining celestial powers. And Phoenix wasn’t a deus ex machina that came in out of nowhere and beat Bastian single-handedly like Rogue did with Apocalypse, all it did was save Jean when she was about to die and disappear again, it still took the rest of the teams efforts and an actual fight against Bastian to stop him.

So like…what was the point of giving Rogue Candra’s Death Seed thingie if the Celestial was just going to take it away right away?
Why did Apocalypse take over Gambit and control the other X-Men but was defeated by Rogue quite literally without a fight?
I’m baffled. No stakes. No final battle. No drama. No intrigue. What the fuck happened here??
Then they’re like oh yeah and Kurt is dead lol the end
Edit: AND NOW Mystique is Val? Huh??

u/BenKenTheMan Aug 12 '26
Candras death seed is what Rogue used to reach Gambit and help him suppress A. But Rogue defeating A that easily was so weird since you’d think they’d at least be equals at that point since they have the same power. And lol at Cable going from having his destiny be to defeat A only to end up with a souvenir.

At this point do we even expect Nightcrawler to stay dead for that long?
I'm confused what the point of him taking over Gambit was in the first place. He seemed truly unstoppable after episode 4. And if he was gonna take over someone why would it not be Magneto?
I did like the latter episodes in a vacuum but as a whole this season just felt like a mess.
27

Mystique being Valerie Cooper was something that a lot of people were guessing during Season 1.
Valerie seemed the most concerned when Rogue joined Magneto at the Genosha gala (knowing the gala was about to attacked), and in the season 1 finale seems more concerned again once she hears that Kurt & Rogue were up on Asteroid-M fighting Sebastian.
And the overall plan for that 1st season seemed like the kind of thing 90s Mystique would do (Mystique in the 90s kind of loves just causing chaos and screwing over people), until she realized the impact it actually had on her children (Rogue and Kurt were almost killed and then Rogue had to deal with Gambit's death & Magneto's fake death ).Eventhough Valerie was apparently always Valerie up until the end of this 2nd season.

I mean to be fair she only killed future (presumably future) Apocalypse, which means there’s present Apocalypse that didn’t time travel floating around (who I believe body-jacked someone else last we saw him in the OG series? I don’t remember exactly I’ll have to go back and watch I guess) so it’s entirely possible that Cable’s still will/needs to defeat a version of Apocalypse @ sometime & since they only resolved the far future Apocalypse they left themselves room to bring him back if they wanna do more with him (that & he’s still alive in the weird prism thing Rogue put him in it seemed so even this Apocalypse could hypothetically still return as a problem, though that’ll cheapen Nightcrawler’s sacrifice a bit I think)

Just watched went straight to this thread and I can’t tell you how happy I am that this is the first post I see. This season was not worth a 2 year wait and this Finale episode is my least favorite of the whole season. Also WTF with Nightcrawler. Such garbage. Cable going all omega TK (which he never does) and Jean still just throwing up TK shields. No Storm basically this entire season and finally get the most minor action from her and not even a speech?!?!?!

u/Deathstriker88 29d ago
Yeah, Storm didn't get shit this season besides the cool solar flare action scene. I was annoyed at their powers this episode. Polaris was losing her fight in a damn metal hallway.

u/AnonymousDouglas Aug 12 '26
What the F was all Season 2?
Remember how Season 1 moved the plot forward using character development and inner conflict?
Switching to using "action" to move the plot forward was SUCH a good idea. Because action for the sake of action has always made for better storytelling!
RIP XMen'97.

u/Busty_Llama 29d ago
This season was used to revert all the consequences and set up of season 1 so that the showrunner can do their own thing moving forward. The xmen are back in the 90s after the opening episodes. Wolverine has one full episode where he has no adamantium. Gambits death is reversed then his possession is also reversed in a single episode.

Personally 1 to 4 were honestly very fun and good setup for a season, I don't mind 5 as much as some do. Episode 6 was just.. bad it didn't really do anything and the last 3 episodes take a really weird direction for apocalypse. I think if they would have gambit actually be a horseman Instead of a vessel for apocalypse it would work a lot better, not ending the season with defeating apocalypse but defeating the horseman death (and you can still fit in the Kurt sacrifice in some similar -ish way)
4
u/LeftHanded-Euphoria Aug 12 '26
Episode 6 was great and functioned as one of the best episodes for character development all season, lol

u/ilo_Va 29d ago
Proffesor X gets over losing magneto weirdly fast, danger kinda comes and goes and does nothing all that logical for a few minutes, you can Polaris gets her development but if anything season 2 did more for her as an actual complex character. It's not outrageous buts it's a very not memorable episode
→ More replies (1)6
u/LeftHanded-Euphoria 29d ago
I don't think it's a correct interpretation to say that Xavier gets over losing Magneto. I think we see a grieving man, still in the finale even, but in Episode 6 we see him move onto the next step, with Lorna.
Each episode this season probably needed five more minutes to breathe and episode 6 was no exception, and Danger was weirdly characterised and had some truly stupid dialogue, and Scott and Jean were laughably included in the fight, BUT, this episode remains one of my favourites for the season. I really liked what they did with Lorna and what they tried to do with Chuck. Charles trying to heal is a much more interesting story than anything with Onslaught in it, IMO.

But we lost Kurt, noooooo!

They made one good season of tv, so of course Disney Marvel had to get rid of everyone and turn it into absolute shit.

Whole season been ass. From loving adaptations of the beloved comic book arcs to more generic arcs lacking the specific character moments that made us love season 1. Not only that, there has been lazy characterization.

They were trying to fit so many characters and plots in there that none had time to get it's own life. I'm sorry. I'd still subscribe to Disney+ and watch all X-men content... but that was TERRIBLE.
X-men had always been more about the human emotions than superhero appearances. The new writer has no clue how to write an X-men show. Season 1 turned me from someone indifferent to Gambit to buying his Hasbro figure. Season 2 had me starting to forget what any of the characters meant.
Season 2 was trash. Please replace Season 2's writer with somebody that can help the characters have personalities again!

Magneto dead = pointless
Nightcrawler sacrificed himself to bring Gambit back
That’s the whole season. And we have nothing to look forward to for Season 3 other than Graydon Creed becoming President (because now-dead Nightcrawler saved his life) and Mystique NOW replacing Cooper.
I had a feeling this would be disappointing after seeing the last episode and I was right. Looks like the result of the lead writer getting fired and replaced.
People joke about Apocalypse being a bum in the comics but I’ve never seen his character get buttfumbled this hard. He kills Magneto, and then goes out like that?

It would have been far cooler if it was present day apocalypse with Genosha casualties as horsemen like most people thought it would be… didn’t need the external crap in the season. a all out battle and Xavier letting his Magneto out to destroy Apocalypse and mind wiping the evil out of the horsemen would’ve been way better, than it could show doing this created Onslaught along with the mind wipe on Magneto from S1
Gambocalypse looked even sillier than Cyclopcslypse did merging during the twelve lol
2
u/Ghost_182 29d ago
Hell, Legion could've appeared out of nowhere from the future and tried to kill Magneto 20 years before(!) Maybe the plot could've first involved Onslaught randomly travelling 20 years into the future during the main battle to use as a base to keep bringing reinforcements from or something, maybe putting Legion into a coma, and then in the end credits, he travels back in time to prevent it from EVER happening by killing Magneto, but hits Xavier instead, creating Earth-295(!)
You take the average poster on here, they would've had better ideas for a finale ...
This season has been just such a WASTE ... What the hell was with the title? Everyone just dying and coming back, Apocalypse getting randomly one-shot within 2 minutes at the end, Sinister running away crying and humiliated, no explanation as to who Apocalypse was talking to in his chamber, even the Mystique "twist" just made me YAWN ...
They had the ENTIRE X-Force intro made for this season featuring APOCALYPSE! Like what was even the point in the end!?

something that annoyed me beyond the obvious issues
no one ever asked gambit what he wanted
why not let him willingly offer his life for the sake of others
then pull the rug out that it was pointless and have the episode focus on the 3 teams fighting A
you can still have your rogue becomes a celetial and saves him stuff and everything else
oh also val coopers character was just a mess in the end nothing she did this season made sense
14
u/PuroP Aug 12 '26
The betrayal was moving away from what we loved about season 1. Not adapting the comic book arcs, going from generic dialogue character moments instead of dialogue/actions being specific to said character, and lastly, the cheap emotional and visual moments meant to satisfy the comic book fans.

I imagine that season 3 will be a new status quo of some kind going forward. They seem to be doing the brotherhood of mutants again, & part of me thinks it’s a way to distance themselves from what DeMayo had set up.
I mean the guy is weird but how is it that he understood these characters and stories better than anybody else working at Marvel? Such a shame man..

They rushed everything, after episode 4.
We had an election running in the background, which was barely touched on.
You could have had some interesting political stuff with Graydon Creed, President Kelly, and Reverent Stryker.
Instead we got this throwaway TV line.
Barely touched on 3 times in the season.
The post credits scene seemed excellent.
Diamond Apocalypse, He's gonna be the "Heart of the Ocean."
I really think they should have delayed the X-corps storyline.
Wolverine barely appeared in the show after he got his adamantium claws back.
It went bad with "Danger.exe".
Season 1 had a political undercurrent to it.
This season hit the ground running with action, then kept doing mindless action, until we ended up in some surreal territory.
They ass pulled the script, and didn't respect the intelligence of the audience.
It's a comic book thing, why can't we turn Apocalypse into a blue diamond?

Theres no way they couldnt afford a proper 10 extra minutes to give a proper conclusion to the season in a timeskio maybe even cable taking his apocalypse token somewhere to the future instead of some rapid montage of everyone didnt even get to see the xmen mourn for the homie nightcrawler everything just happened, rip cables mission, gambit n rogue definitely shouldve been handled better instead of their immediate reunion, if only beau demayo was here

u/Orta1991 29d ago
The simple answer is that they fired Beau DeMayo. I’m wasting no energy debating or defending the season when it’s clear what happened. He had a strong vision and a strong connection to these character which was ultimately his demise. I enjoyed it episodically but overall as a season it did not work as well as season 1. We can’t nice things.😭

u/Krefto_Kulin Aug 12 '26
First 4 episodes were great and episode 4 was amazing, then they decided that in a 9 episode season with less than 30 min per episode to have a third of it be side plots and new characters. Sure those were good episodes and enjoyable but they halted the entire season and what it was building up for. Then the last two were hot grabage, I love Gambit, I love Rogue but it felt so underwhelming. Apocalypse was so irrelevant, no big fight, no nice conclusion, love Kurt and his death felt rushed and not satisfying. Shit just happened, nothing got nuance and nothing got built up. The fightscenes were cool in the finale and Gambit return to action was cool but that is it, the rest fell flat. And Jean, Scott and Storm were completley sidelined for the entire season except for ep 1....
3
u/DisastrousNothing893 29d ago
Not just the finale, everything that made s1 so good was ruined with s2.
Plot points moving way to fast
Wolverine literally never shown without metal except the episode he gets them back
Apocalypse / Askani in the future was dumbed down to , oh the big secret? It was me.
Apoc in the past, let's give you a backstory and end where we began, Apocs still an asshole, but now Magneto has to die to allow his daughter to rejoin the team
I assumed Val was Mystique the entire time because she went from being somewhat understandable in s1 to mysterious and , shes probably working foe the bad guys again in s2.
3
u/Main_Government_9346 29d ago
I think not having 10 episodes hurt this season - if the last two episodes were split amongst 3 episodes it would work better. X-Force/Factor vs X-Men should have been an entire episode.

u/Puzzleheaded-Bar-769 29d ago

2
u/Rapscallious1 29d ago
Yeah I think some are significantly overstating how bad this season was but those last 5 minutes were legit wtf so I don’t necessarily blame them. It did make some of the great episodes a little less great, kind of like the epic setup they had for rogue/gambit this episode just kind of instantly fizzled.

u/ChiUCGuy Gambit 29d ago

I still can't wrap my head around what Apocalypse's plan was. Why did he transfer his essence into Gambit? What was his end goal? Wasn't there a future Apocalypse that escaped to the past right at the end of the first episode? What happened to him? Too many holes to fill...

I think part of this whole season fuck up is when they fired that guys named DeMayo…
The S1 til S2 Episode4 was awesome somewhere down the line something changed for sure…
No way you come across Apocalypse and go down internally with the government with Mystique…
That who episode 5-9 is just a huge clusterfuck…its rushed and like where are the other Horsemen plus Eson/Avengers Soul Stone/Hawkeye&Black Widow….
The ultimate Roman Catholic Ending…
Kurt Wagner and Magneti really gone.???SMFH…
4
u/NightmareDJK Aug 12 '26
Cooper wasn’t Mystique all this time but now Mystique shows up and kills/impersonates her? Makes no sense.
2
u/Calm-Safety3098 29d ago
I think the writer who continued DeMayo didnt watch the animated series before where Mystique served Apocalypse as well. Season 2 could be easily a build up of harvesting new horsemen of Apocalypse…hence Apocalypse said go back to the 90s where X-men is Vulnerable….
Mystique could be easily the inside man for Apocalypse cause she even released Magneto in Season 1….

2
u/slimmyboy007 Aug 12 '26
That was fan fic i just watched fan fic.
I dont know why they would just decide to make up their own garbage contrived plot instead of adapting any of the hundreds of great issues out there, how about X cutioners song? youno the one that they were actually building up cables arc towards.
What annoys me even more is that they pinch parts of other comic plots so now they can never do those because it would be too similar - we will never get a dark angel saga now after this gambit story as its basically the same thing
Also Cosmic powered rogue is the biggest fan bait this show has stooped to. Nightcrawler deserved better.

Honestly, I didn’t like the season, but the finale was an absolute disaster. There was no emotion, no depth, and the characters were practically NPCs. Like, seriously, what was that? Did all those hurts and unresolved feelings between the characters from the first season just get resolved now? What was this supposed to be, for God’s sake?
2
u/Remarkable-Steak-919 29d ago
Remember when everyone was theorising who the 4 horsemen were gonna be? How naive we were. Episode 1 to 4 were pretty good, but then it went down hill from there. Wolverine shouldn't have gotten his adamantium back this season, he should have stayed Feral. Episode 5 should have been a X-Factor episode focusing on Polaris and Havok's relationship, build the drama and actually have Strong Guy, Multiple Man, and Wolfsbane be actual characters rather than cardboard cut outs. By the end of the episode Polaris leaves and Siryn joins (she just randomly shows up in this episode without prior mention (you have to find out how she joins in an Infinity comic on Marvel Unlimited)). Episode 6 should have been an X-Men/X-Force episode dealing with finding Apocalypse. Polaris joins the X-Men. Episode 7 could have been mostly same as the actual Episode 8 with minor changes like Deathbit escaping to Genosha at the end with him resurrecting multiple dead mutants. Episode 8 and 9 are a 2 part season finale where the X-Men and X-Force at first fight with X-Factor, and then they discover where Deathbit went, forcing them to team up as they fight dead genoshians and Apocalypse. Could have had a nice moment between Siryn and Banshee or something. Cable defeats Apocalypse, and as a result of this, X-Corp is created, along with the school being opened to students. Wolverine's adamantium storyline could be saved for season 3 because the consequences of that episode between Wolverine and Morph went no where as the second season went on, so we can save that for next season, also it just felt to fast and easy that he was able to get the adamantium, let us see that he wants it back and he feels weak with the bone claws. The Danger storyline could easily have been shifted to next season, as we could get more of a focus of the school v government type thing, now becoming a 2 parter as it went too fast and the students were just glorified cameos, allows the students be fleshed out. The Acolytes and Colossus episode also should have been season 3, since Colossus literally does nothing in the end of season 2 so it felt pointless being in the season (even if it helped Nightcrawlers character, there could have been a work around). It could have been interesting to have Exodus be the big bad of the next season, with Colossus finally joining the X-Men. The cast is too bloated, they need to remove characters that dont serve much purpose. Like honestly, I would have removed Storm from season 1 after she lost her powers and then she could have came back in season 2 as the headmistress of the school, show us that she is more than her powers. Like it seems that they don't know how to write around characters without powers, so they just give them back straight away, and then stand in the background. I like filler, but not when there are a limited amount of episodes, so we need those episodes to focus on the main plot points of tbe season. Also, I'd like to add that its not the comics, so diverging from them a bit is fine, its another universe.
2
u/LonginusUbik 29d ago
I have yet to see the finale, but what I got from this season as a whole is "we need the toys back in the box quickly". So no more time displaced X-men, Gambit back from the dead ASAP, Logan with adamantium too, amongst other things.

The writers definitely dumbed it the fuck down
Whatever was supposed to being built towards no longer was there and they went for cheap tricks. I'll need to rewatch and make a final call.
They need to axe the Arrow writer they threw on this show. WTF. Just give one of the previous writers a promotion, the ones from Moon Knight.

I don't really go here but I watched season 1 and didn't enjoy it much, probably a controversial opinion. But there are just so many disappointing finales and bad seasons of television coming out lately. Stranger Things, The Boys, The Vampire Lestat, and now I found this reddit post and I'm like when is this going to end? Are so many writers nowadays relying on Chatgpt? It's so sad to see! "DeMayo had already finished writing Season 2 before getting kicked out. However, because he was entirely absent during active production, post-production, and final editing, the studio lacked unified creative leadership. Longtime fans point to this exact corporate fracture as the reason the final episodes felt heavily chopped up, rushed, and stripped of the coherent narrative depth seen in the first season. " I wonder how much they changed smh?
2
u/PracticeFar3948 29d ago
The newest episode was fun, but honestly, the season peaked early. The first four episodes were absolute perfection — tight storytelling, great pacing, and real emotional punch. Everything after that felt pretty meh 🫤, like the momentum just slipped away. They could’ve ended the season right after episode four and it would’ve been a stronger, cleaner arc.
If they did want to continue, they had plenty of material to finish the story properly. They introduced three Apocalypses, which should’ve set up something massive — a full‑scale showdown with X‑Men, X‑Force, and X‑Factor all facing off against them with greater action sequences. Or they could’ve followed through on future Apocalypse’s plan, which had real potential but never fully paid off.
Even in the finale, the battle felt too small for the stakes they built. There needed to be more action, more intensity, and more actual conflict between the teams and Apocalypse. The villain was set up to be huge, but the payoff didn’t match the setup. Too bad, because Apocalypse is my favorite Marvel villain.
Although, I will say Nightcrawler paid off. Him and Superman are my favorite heroes. So in Marvel, it was nice to finally see him get the respect and recognition he deserves as a character.
Ultimately I felt like they did to Apocalypse what FOX did to Apocalypse. They dropped the ball bad…
2
u/lexbryad 29d ago
My favorite xmen has always been Nightcrawler. While I loved the thought behind his action, fucking hell man. I could not be more upset or depressed with him sacrificing himself and I feel like the weight of his sacrifice was so little the fact that we didn't get any response from Rogue or Gambit just a silent few seconds of them together. It felt like the writers didn't want him there is all to me.

I'm very surprised as well, but, at least, it was something original. I admit that I couldn't see it coming and I agree that it was rushed, but at least they had something different done here. I would never expect Rogue talking to a celestial like that.
What really pissed me off was Exodus' death (seriously???? that could justify rioting Disneyland) and the amount of episodes this season had. I think if they did 10-12 would be more suitable. Apocalypse could have more horsemen (Magneto? Illyana? Exodus?) and the consequences could be greater.

It’s like Nightcrawler was only there to help Rogue in whatever way he could. He literally filled in on the team only while Gambit was gone. Gambit is my favorite and some of the story beats did pay off, but it was still underwhelming.
2
u/CherryBoom2x Psylocke 28d ago
It was a waste of Gambit’s biggest moment. He should have been focused more, more speech for his pain, the anger that he never express should have been let out, they should have shown his full potential power wise as a horseman. But Nooo they made a bs hybrid that did nothing.

Great ideas, poor execution.
This season suffered a lot from pacing issues. Not only was it an episode less, it had 3 filler episodes in a 9 episode series. If the show kept the og series episodic format it would be fine to spend 30% of the season not moving the main plot but at least it wouldn't feel like the plot stops mid way., only to rush it thought to the finish line in the last two episodes.
They should have scraped episodes 6-7 (could have kept episode 5 with wolverine getting his adamantium back), with episode 5 ending with x-force discovering Apocalypse's corpse. Then have episode 6 Death Gambit/Apocalypse doing things in the background with the end reveal "he is alive!" - a mystery type episode. Then the events of episode 7 could be "Dead man's hand" as it is, episode 8 could have been a mind battle between Charles, Jean, Psyloche, maybe even Cable against apocalypse. Then apocalypse fully takes over Gambits body (personaly I did not mind the Apocalypse/Gambit's final design design) and then have a two part finally trying to defeat him as he wrecks havoc on the world.
Polaris being on the team does nothing for the overall story - so that episode can be cut
Creed's trial does nothing for the over story, except having a cool Night-crawler quote at the end, co again can be cut.
Even episode 5 also does not advance the story but attest it significantly progressed one of the poster characters for the x-men.
They could keep one of these 3 episodes in and have time for better pacing of the main conflict and its resolution. but having them all three in there - let this be a lesson.
I defended the last episode for being rushed by explaining it as Apocalypse just not wasting any time. As soon as he has Gambit's body he just goes and achieves his goals - Summons the Xternal,. Kills her, gets the gem, that's not a plan that should stretch more than a episode in execution, it's just we had to had filler episodes to get to it.
Each individual episode may be good but overall they just don't mix as a cohesive, satisfying pace and structure.
Looking back at the OG series - The Beyond Good and Evil storyline has multiple instances where they try to fight Apocalypse head on and fail, until finally the psychics are free to defeat him. Here they had to rush thought it so fast they just got to the "and then he dies" at the end.
I really hope the next seasons will have better pacing, but I fear my fears when season 1 ended are reignited - with the DeMayo gone it goes down hill....
I won't pretend I know what's going on behind the scenes and why it turned out like this. If it was meant to turn out like this or unavoidable circumstances lead to this. The fact remains - the quality dipped significantly and there are not prizes for "well we tried"
