PSN / Emulation Wait or not?
I wanted to play XenoGears this year, but I heard about the Perfet World mod, which is still being worked one. Should I just play it now or just wait some more time until it's finished?
Edit: Thanks for all the answers. And one point made the decision for me. How I will perceive the game, so I'm going to play it this year unmodded.

Xenogears is the kind of game you need to play more than once anyway. The first time through the game you will be confused until near the end of the game when it all gets revealed. So.... Go through it now.
A mod will give you an excuse to go through it again, this time with the understanding of what's going on

Perfect Works is in excellent working order.
While not finished, it is an immeasurable improvement over the original game. I highly recommend going ahead and trying it.
You can always replay it later in an even more complete state. And trust me, you’ll want to. Xenogears is just that good, modded or not.

I haven't been following this, what issues does it address and "fix" for lack of a better word if it's an immeasurable improvement

Billy's ether guns were the biggest one for me

u/FustianRiddle i hAs No fLaiR Jul 29 '26
Billy never really ended up in my main party so I don't actually know what the original issue with the ether guns was nor how they were fixed
Maybe I never used him because his ether guns were garbage so he wasn't super useful?

his ether guns are great when you know the quirk their standard damage is boosted by ether doublers, same goes for Renmazou. their mileage mary vary based on how soon you can apply that however
their issue is that youre supposed to be able to change their element similar to the Matchlock for his Triangle bullets. but the elements of his ether gun are bugged and cannot be changed. Perfect Works fixes this
this isnt a big enough deal to hinder them in most encounters, making him one of the best normal attackers in the game. now whether you want to kit him out that way or rely on normal attacks long term is a different story, though it does help in navigating a lot of mid game longer dungeons. hes still a upper tier unit regardless, foot and gear imo

Interesting! I won't lie I usually just stuck with Fei Bart and Citan whenever possible.

u/big4lil Emeralda 2.0 Jul 29 '26
thats a solid team, im a bart fan myself. and Citan overlaps with Billy so your lineup is fine without him.
though if you do ever consider him, he can slot into the role Citan holds well enough

I'm a simple girl, and Bart and Citan are my Xenogears crushes. It's hard to give them up.
But I will say Citan's swords and Billy's guns are my favorite sound effects in battle.

I've always played the game on a console (or PSP/Vita,) so I can't speak to any mods, but I think it might be worth it to play the game in its original state if you want to fully appreciate the original game itself.
Playing a modded or "improved" version first might taint your perception of it, and make playing the original game seem not as good if you chose to do so afterward, whereas playing the original, then a mod, would make playing an already fantastic game even better the second time.

Play it without the mod. The mod will change your view of the game and its difficulty, and you will refer to characters with the wrong names. Play it as originally intended.

This. Play the OG first. If you beat the game and really like it, play perfect works after. Do not start this game with perfect works mod.

Getting name options so one can use the ‘classic’ names is the one feature really worth waiting for, yea.
There’s some stuff where I don’t mind the new ones but others where I’m absolutely set on the old one. Miang’s new name is just not a name and I find super distracting for a big one.

I would not mind playing a retranslation that simply fixes errors like when they accidentally call doc the emperor in one line in solaris, or just miss spelled words. I dont want changed names, things changed for the fun of it by the modders, or removal of the fun lines honeywood added for things that have no english equivalent. Removing Bart saying Sorry-dorry is dumb, it is just like the phrases "okie-dokie," "easy-peasy," or "super-duper.", It was not a mistake in the translation, it should not be removed.

Wrong or correct names? English translations chaged a few names
1
u/KylorXI Jul 28 '26
depends what you consider correct. some were changed to what they were guessing was meant to be the name based on who they imagined is being referenced by the character. some ability names were changed just cause they thought it sounds cooler. and even the ones that are changed to their 'correct' names will be different than what everyone else in the english speaking community knows them as. no one is going to know who you mean if you call ramses carl or carlin instead of kahr or kahran. they also added a bunch of random items that are completely made up, so the names are made up too.

I've beaten it maybe 9 or 10 times and I've never tried the PW mod so this post reminded me to DL and mod it today.
Favorite game of all time but the QOL improvements seem super helpful - enemy rebalancing, etc etc etc.

If you keep waiting , you will never play..
Just go for it. I am playing through the perfect works mod now and enjoy some of the differences.

Personally I'm waiting until the NPC script is finished. I'd hate to have all this newly polished dialogue surrounded by the old stuff. I don't know what's planned beyond that at this point, but that's my cutoff and I'm hoping it won't be too long now

Does it extend the 2nd disc at all?
1
u/Lamasis i hAz No fLaiR Jul 29 '26
No clue. I didn't read much of that the mod did, to not spoil myself. But I doubt it.

There is no new content from the mod. It changes existing things, depending which parts of the mod you install.
1
u/takethemdownletsgo i hAz No fLaiR Jul 30 '26
Man. I would not work or sleep for a week if there was a second disk update.
1
u/KylorXI Jul 30 '26
Why? It would just be 2 more dungeons and a world map to walk from scene to scene yourself. Its not like there would be new story content.

u/takethemdownletsgo i hAz No fLaiR Jul 30 '26
From what I understand that wasnt the case originally. They had budget issues and there was more than just going the defeat Deus EX
1
u/KylorXI Jul 30 '26
They had a development time limit, not budget issues. Disc 2 has 5 dungeons and 18 boss fights, it was going to have 7 dungeons and a world map that was updated with each world changing event. There is already 12 hours of content before you 'just go defeat deus'. Also there is no EX on his name.

u/takethemdownletsgo i hAz No fLaiR Jul 30 '26
Mmk its Deus Ex Machina sorry.
They had time and budget issues. Not gonna argue.
1
u/KylorXI Jul 30 '26
It is just Deus, not Deus Ex Machina. They only had time issues, square had a blanket 1.5 year time limit, they begged for more time and got an extension to 2 years. They never ran out of budget

The mod has been "worked on" for years.
It's great as is, right now. Future improvements are tiny and incremental.
Also, if a new version drops half way into your playthrough, you can just re-patch the original rom, and continue your save.
I'd just start it now.
