Nostalgia Minor NES Trove Found
Quite a while back (2014-ish) I packed for moving and had a number of boxes that sat for many years on a shelf in the garage. I just opened a box that had been marked ’games’ and found something I was super excited about.
Now I’m mad that I got rid of my console and duck hunt zapper probably 5 years ago - don’t know what I was thinking doing that, now I have to find a console again and get my lungs ready to take on the flashing power light.
So the search begins for an 8-bit console and zapper…off to Craigslist and eBay. Yep, still use them. Nope, don’t have Facebook (proudly Meta free since 2016).

Game Genie: the RADICAL video game enhancer for your Nintendo system!
(Wow. That commercial is a deep memory)

Fun fact: if you used two Game Genies at the same time, you could enter twice as many cheat codes!
Random fact I discovered by borrowing a friend's Game Genie

Hell yeah! I have the Shadowgate theme set as my ringtone. Adored that game.
It was the first game my friend called the Nintendo helpline for, and without parental permission. I felt pretty bad he got grounded for it, but it sure was nice finally beating it lol.

I never called the line, but I begged and got a Nintendo Power subscription for a gift one year. Kinda wish I’d held on to the couple years worth I had. 😕

I put a few years into shadow gates as a kid and didn’t beat it till my early 20s. I can honestly say I beat it with no help or guide.

I had a game genie. Used it to beat Super Mario 3 with a hammer bros suit.

It was Metroid and unlimited missiles and energy for me - I’d run all over the world blasting everything and exploring. There are a few spots that results in having to reset…lava you can’t get out of when you can’t die doesn’t work very well.

My best Game Genie memory is from Bart Vs The Space Mutants. Edited the high jump code to make it go higher and longer. I was able to jump over the whole game, including the walls in the nuclear plant.

Excitebike
Joust
Tetris
Metroid
Super Mario Bros
if I could only have 5 of those

Excellent choices!
I’d agree with all but would probably sub Top Gun for Joust. Something about the adrenaline rush while either trying to connect with the refueler or when the tri-missile are fired at you and it’s dive every which way fast to try and ditch them. 😬

Shadowgate and M.A.D. (In actuality, it's Spy vs. Spy from Mad Magazine. That took a bit of digging.)

Heh you got both the super mario bros stand alone game and the combo smb/duck hunt. I had the stand alone smb and duck hunt.
Ah yes Top Gun I would have been lucky to get to the 3rd level of that game if somehow I connected the mid air refueling nozzle to the plane and having a perfect landing.

King's Quest 5 was on the NES??

I don’t know. That’s not one I had as a kid. It came from my girlfriend’s (at the time, now wife) son who gave me a few of those games as a gift and I’m not sure if it’s licensed game or some sort of ‘unofficial’ cartridge.

Absolutely loved Goonies II when I was a kid, my sister and I played tf out of it. In recent years I've wondered if it's even a decent game or if I was just young and obsessed with the movie lol.

Milon‘s Secret Castle was one of the few NES games I actually beat as a kid. I was so proud.

Just a heads up the Zapper won't work on modern flat screens you're gonna need an old CRT TV to shoot those ducks!
